And I found it in Sonic 3, by accident, whilst on Sonic Mega Collection this weekend. I left the game on the cheat menu on whilst I was looking for a missing hints book (which I still haven't found). After about an hour or so I nearly had a heart attack when, for no apparent reason, the menu music changed. Not changed to a different track, but became accompanied by this slightly disturbing xylophone-chimey backing. I tried replaying the track, out of curiosity, and the same backing entered again by the time I got back, so it wasn't a temporary blip, it's actually MEANT TO BE THERE. I've no idea why it's there, I can only assume it's some sort of in-joke by the sound people. Oddly, it doesn't occur Sonic 3 & Knuckles, just the original.

I was looking for hints for an entirely different game, just to clarify. The music in question is that funky Jamaican-style interlude that plays during the character select and cheat menu in Sonic 3, you know that one?

Odd bit of reasearch you've got there. Hmm...I don't really think that that has been found before. Sounds like a Sega-fied version of Totaka's song...is it possible it could be somewhere in other Sega games?

Yeah, I didn't think it had been found before, so I wanted to see if it was present in all versions and isn't just a muck-up in my copy.
Totaka's song? I dunno what that is, enlighten me.

Any correlation to Michael Jackson?
Also, was this same song not featured on an Advance game?

Could anyone get a clip?
I've never been able to get the cheat menu to work on Sonic 3, save for the Sonic 2 switch trick.

honestly it's not that interesting. it's probably a glitch rather than an easter egg.

Thanks for the YouTube link. I've never gotten the level select for Sonic 3 to work, but I don't think I'll be trying that.

Why are people afraid of the switch trick? It works almost every time. It's not gonna break your MegaDrive or your game.

And after the stupidly hard level select cheat on Sonic 3, they give you one of the most frigging simple things that came to mind for S3&K. Though in that case - What the hell's the point of accessing the sound test/level select? They replaced the awesome Act 1 Boss music with an inferior product. Why are people afraid of the switch trick? It works almost every time. It's not gonna break your MegaDrive or your game. Agreed, while the megadrive relies on addressing the cart as memory, usually when it's running stuff like the level select, certain parts stay in the megadrive's own little cache and I guess that's how the trick is done, the menus are similar so they probably used the same sort of range of bytes or method of putting in the level select, just changed how to access it. Level select/debug mode is probably as simple as a CPU register or byte/signiture in cache. Something that might survive a soft reboot where code is simply re-run fromthe beginning. It's always perfectly safe, you won't fry your chips this way, but be careful anyways, because the only way to really damage it is possibly crossing wires, say accidentlly crossing power into a data pin "could" damage the chips. That's why it's suggested you do it carefully and pull it out as straight as possible, pulling out one side may cross the pins. EDIT: I've always found the levels selects for later MD games impossible, I remember accidentally finding the Sonic 3D level select but had no idea how I did it and never got to it again.

No, there's two for Sonic 3D Megadrive.
The other one has a "CONGRATULATIONS - You have accessed the secret level select" message, and I have no idea how I did it.

On Sonic 3D, you can access the level select by simply wiggling the cartridge. It's how I always did it.
