Thanks folks. I've no problems with critiques. No one can expect every reader to like everything you do. I just wanted to explain why the tone of my back up strips was usually lighter than the lead strip.
As for 'It's Raining Bananas', that was my personal favourite! A chance to do something completely, er, bananas. If you'll pardon the pun. ;-)

I'll start off by saying that this is a great thread which instantly caught my attention because it's the kind of topic that needs attention and debate. Another reason is simply because though there was a lot of childish humour strips that Lew produced (no offense Lew) but there was also a lot of memorable strips that he created which I'm sure will be covered here.
Also I really enjoyed 'It's Raining Bananas' at the time and still do. I really can't explain it....

Raining Bananas is class. I can't imagine how long it must've taken to write a comic strip entirely in rhyme that a) made sense and b) was entertaining.
As seemingly everyone else has said, this is a great thread. On a side note, Lew wrote Marko's Magic Football as well didn't he? I really enjoyed that, shame it never got a second series.

Oh Lew, unfortunately there’s only a few things that come to mind when we think of Lew Stringer, one of STC’s longest serving writers. We think of Brave Hogs, childish puns, lesbians in space, raining bananas and possibly if we’re feeling nice we’ll remember Project Brutus, but probably add “I thought Nigel wrote that.” Ha! They say one shouldn't read the words of critics but I'd just like to clear up something if I may. When I was asked to contribute to STC it was because of my work in children's humour comics. The thinking was that STC was a bit too serious and might put off the younger reader so I was brought in to provide a lighter tone to the stories I wrote. Hence the "childish puns". They were puns aimed at children. It's a bit unfair to compare Nigel's more serious material to my lighter stuff. It wasn't intended to compete on that level. However, as the stories were all under one roof as it were, and featuring the same characters, I can understand why comparisons are made. When I devised the Project:Brutus saga and similar "main" stories they were intentionally more serious simply because that was the remit for the main strips. The back-ups were there for light relief, hence the lighter tone of those. It didn't turn out too badly. STC had a good long run compared to many other comics and most readers enjoyed it. Hi Lew, how are things? I don't know if I ever mentioned this but when you started writing Sonic strips nobody told me that it was to provide a lighter tone. I never knew that until I read it somewhere years later. Unless my memory is faulty - which can happen. I'm just pleased Richard Burton never asked me to change my approach apart from the occasional comment that the last thing I wrote was about as far as he felt I should go or something like that.

Well that certainly shines a new light on the reprints debacle.

Er... I thought that much was obvious?! (Unless of course you subscribe to the fanciful theory that Nigel and Lew had simply "run out of ideas"...)

No, I mean that I was under the impression that the whole thing was an editorial cock up.

Well that certainly shines a new light on the reprints debacle. 3 common misconceptions: The writers and artists were employed by Fleetway The editors or writers decided on reprints The writers and artists signed contracts

I don't mean to be a [censored], Matt (sorry for the bump, by the way, folks), but I don't suppose you're going to be continuing this? I thought it was an excellent thread.

Yes I will, you know I keep meaning to come back to this honestly I do.... I think to be honest I had a lot on and after Lew seemed to get the wrong idea of the thread I kind of lost heart. I really forgot how much work i'd put into these.
my top 25 plus 5 list seems to have been lost on a broken usb stick, but I know i'll have a back up somewhere and if I can find it I'll try to carry on soon.

Lew's alright, he's busy fending off some much worse stick from some insane manchild Dandy-haters at the moment. I can't speak for the guy but I'm sure he's not, like, aggrieved by this thread. The immediate outpouring of respect for him and love for his work should really have seen to any misgivings. Christ - if someone dismisses Lew's stuff they're dismissing half of STC.
