did the Drakon empire wipe out the echidna race?

we don't know a lot about the echidna's we know they were incredibly technologically advanced, eg robots in the past, we know that knuckles came from the past, and we know that the emeralds originate on the floating island, with the chaos emeralds being created later by the drakon empire, which the echidna's promptly nick in order to avoid as Pochamcamac puts it the drakon empire conquering the galaxy.
Later on in this story when the echidnas drive the drakon empire out, Pochamcamc states "but for now we are at war... a war that will decide the fate of the entire echidna race" Flash forward to the present and in the end we have 3 echidna's left Zachary, Tikal and Knuckles, this seems to imply that the drakon empire won the war but if that's true why didn't they steal back the chaos emeralds and proceed to conquer the galaxy?

Later we discover that Zachary wants to take revenge on mobius but we never discover why exactly, other then he is evil. finally in 249, Knuckles, porker and Tikal, install a bug into Zachary's eye so that they can keep tabs on him but this is never followed up.

So I suppose the question remains will we ever learn more about Zachary's back-story in a follow up to 249?
And will knuckles ever learn all of the secrets about his past, would this even be a good thing? as knuckles states in 261 "some secrets should stay that way".

It's been my long belief that we'd get a Knuckles-centered "Sonic Chronicles" adaptation! In fact I even came up with my own ideas for how it would go!

Focusing only on Knuckles, Tikal and Porker (maybe Chaotix as well), I had have it that:

1) Zachary is a member of the Nocturne Clan (A rival tribe of Pochamcamc); that survived the slaughter of the Drakon/ Echidna War by betraying their own kind to the Drakon Empire. They now live in an alternate realm known as the Twilight Cage (accessed only by a special portal ring, like the one that sent Knuckles to the Special Zone).
2) A small portion of Knuckles' Tribe survive as slaves of the Nocturnes (When I say small, I mean less than 50; the tribe is basically weak and few).
3) Among the tribe is "Nestor the Wise"; unlike his game counterpart, I'd have it the STC Nestor isn't a Nocturne traitor, but instead... KNUCKLES' UNCLE (how did he survive all these years? Like the game, the Twilight Cage would have mysterious space-time properties).
4) With the help of the Nocturne traitor Shade, Knuckles would save some of his tribe and return with them to the Floating Island.
From there anything could happen...

Of course, this is just my idea, where the story is gonna go is anyone's guess; I just hope, as well as you do, that we finally learn something about that creep Zachary, and the fate of Knuckles' people.
