I kinda was. But I wasn't expecting him til the episode itself. Impressed at how well Doctor Who manages not to get spoiled beforehand.

YAY. MCGANN!! YES YES YES \o/ This was my most unlikely yet most wanted dream. And it came true! And they gave him a great costume! Yaaay. Now to make John Hurt the Valeyard. Go on, BBC. <3

I've been wondering if AAISAT is also a "test run" to see if they can get away with a recast first Doctor before maybe bringing him into the show proper.

Pity Eccleston couldn't agree to the terms that Moffatt gave. To see Smith, Tennant and Eccleston in one episode a la Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee... that would've been amazing. Still, John Hurt!

I liked Eccleston, he was a good Doctor. Was very good for the one series he did. He really was, he was great as a Doctor suffering the effects of the Time War, not particularly an eccentric or Doctorish Doctor, and lacking quirks, but he played his role well and considering what has been revealed about the Time War in recent episodes I feel he is a huge miss. I would have loved to have seen him after the revelation of Hurt as the incarnation he tries to forget. He was also much better than Tennant, who I used to like as The Doctor but rewatching episodes and even seeing him in the trailer for tonights episode I'm fed up of him. He's overrated and brought nothing to the role besides cheap melodrama and a goofy face. Matt Smith portrays convincing emotion, and is to me, the perfect example of how to play The Doctor. Tennant is a poor Doctor in my opinion and I'm not looking forward to the scenes with him and Smith. On a different note, with the next Doctor now the Thirteenth Doctor surely that means Peter Capaldi will be The Valeyard? And while I know there will be no limit to The Doctor's regenerations, I hope they at least acknowledge the Thirteen regenerations rule.

Since I first saw Doctor Who in 2005, I wasn't too sure about David Tennant at first when he replaced Eccleston. He actually grew on me though, and Tennant's my favorite Doctor from the modern era, well I guess since the revival of the series. I just liked him, and his role as The Doctor. I'm sorta interested in how Peter Capaldi will do, I think he'll be pretty good.

I've got to be honest, I am absolutely burned out on Doctor Who. All the hype leading up to it has just been overwhelming and I'm just becoming more and more apathetic with every new "3 days to go! Which was your favourite Doctor?" message that appears on Facebook.
Hopefully the anniversary will get my plums pumping again.

Shay I actually got burned out on Doctor Who too. It happened after the Planet of the Dead episode in 2009, I just couldn't handle the super long hour specials after thar, they weren't bad really they just dragged on. That was the last episode I saw all the way through too, with Michelle Ryan or whatever her name was, with the Bus in the Desert, ray creature stuff.

I totally agree: as much as I think Tennant is nicer to look at(!), this is pretty much the basis of his Doctor. Eccelston certainly does a better job, considering that he really didn't like working on the series. Tennant's run also had some pretty cringeworthy episodes, including his long, drawn out departure. :s It made the whole thing seem a little forced. Then again, I said the same about The Ponds' departure. Maybe I'm becoming crusty in my old age!

He really was, he was great as a Doctor suffering the effects of the Time War, not particularly an eccentric or Doctorish Doctor, and lacking quirks I find it funny, before the relaunch the Doctor's quirks were fairly understated. If anything, Eccleston was par for the course, for the most part! The Doctor was a lot more straightforward than he is now: the only particularly quirky one I can think of is, of course, Tom Baker, but he could pull that off without it feeling forced. I hope Capaldi brings it back to being a bit more levelled, rather than just being a meme machine as Tennant sometimes threatened to be and Smith most definitely was. Anyway, yeah. Dazzy, I agree: those specials got really tedious and I wish Davies had put more work into The End of Time instead of writing them. Even the worst DW episodes are entertaining at least, to me: I usually get annoyed at the unfulfilled potential rather than the overall quality of the show. Still, though, if the anniversary fails to rekindle my interest I can honestly see myself just getting off at this stop.

I loved the whole episode, from the classic 1963 intro to all 12 Doctors at the end. John Hurt's performance was impeccable, and I found it strange and awesome to see David Tennant back after all this time. Plus I loved how the Time War was briefly explained, the Zygons and how Rose was cast in as an illusion. The thing that got me was the 3 TARDIS'es!! So yeah, a fitting 50th anniversary ep.

Very good, I thought. Piddling trivialities aside, this was a good story well told, had a nice growth moment for the Doctor and a happy ending. Much, much better than I was expecting, considering how often these things tend to turn into circle-jerks.

If they've reaffirmed the "13 lives" rule, then does that mean Peter Capaldi will be the last Doctor? o.o

Nah, 'course not. There'll be some kind of excuse on the go. Maybe he has a family size Lucozade before he dies and the extra energy gives him the edge he needs to regenerate.
But seriously I reckon that will be a plot thread. It might tie into the Time Lords showing up again, as well.

Okay, so it looks as though the Time Lords may be returning. But if they do return, the Daleks may just come along and try to wipe them out again. Some good grand finale potential there.

Well we know they can bestow extra regenerations on people. Wouldn't you do that for the bloke who saved your civilisation?
Naturally, has HAS to have more than 13 lives, otherwise he can't ever become the Curator.

All the talk of Trenzalore says to me that mortality is going to be a theme of Capaldi's run, and getting past the regen limit will no doubt but part of that.
