Judas Priest have announced they're doing one more tour then calling it a day.
They've not done anything worthwhile since 2001 so this is good news.

Didn't Iron Maiden also say that their most recent album was going to be their last? I recall reading that a while ago, but they might have taken that back. I'm not a big fan so I don't keep up with that kind of news.

No it was just a rumour because their most recent album was called "The Final Frontier".

Whoa. Seriously? I remember hearing that he'd disappeared but contacted his manager to say he was going to write some new music, but I didn't even know he was ill.
I'll have to play "Baker Street" tomorrow.

To try and move this fairly neglected topic away from mostly memoriams for a bit: been listening to some old-school happy hardcore style tracks this morning. I have to say I find it amusing, and slightly baffling, that music such as the track below was once considered a "danger to society" (mainly by stuffy documentaries and news broadcasts).
Then again, all music styles over the years have been considered as such when they first arrive on the scene. Dunno what it is with folk outcrying over new musical movements, I'm glad I'll never take that attitude as I grow older, as I prefer to embrace all kinds of music culture. There isn't a genre or subgenre in the world where there are no tracks I'd admit to liking.
That said, evryone has different musical tastes, some eclectic, some specific. So what sort of styles to other people enjoy that other folk in general don't find to their taste, or perhaps is there a genre other people (or someone else) like that doesn't appeal to you? Or perhaps have you gone through a phase of liking a particular musical movement, only to later "grow out" of it, as it were?

It's down to moral panic, in most cases. The obvious targets are heavy metal ("Satanic backmasking told these children to kill themselves") and hip-hop ("Homophobic, glorifies violence and objectifies women").
It goes all the way back to blues and jazz, though that particular outcry was very much motivated by racism.
As for "growing out of it", yes, I suppose that happens. My favourite bands used to be Madness, the Specials and that kind of thing. I still like that, but my preferences have generally moved backwards chronologically. I'm more partial to Rolling Stones albums from the 1960s, the Animals, Little Richard, Ray Charles and so on.

That's interesting. I find it quite refreshing to hear of someone getting into music from before their time. Best way, really, there's some real gems been made over many years that may be forgotten to history given a significant amount of time, I mean, media is in its relative infancy when compared to history. But then, with the advent of the digital age such things have a lot more chance of remaining in living memory. I often crack a smile if someone samples a track from a period like the 40s, 50s or 60s and creates a modern track with it. Provided it's done reasonably well, of course.
I'd be intrigued to hear your take on present music, if you're inclined.

My take on contemporary music? Is there anything in particular you'd like to know? Any particular genre or trend? I'm happy enough to discuss anything I know about.

Well, how about the mainstream stuff to start, like what you'd hear on Radio 1 nowadays. Personally, there's actually quite a few good tracks I've heard recently that I like. Or at least, I would like them more if they weren't being played every hour of every day. But then, I guess it's down to how much you listen to the station really. It's pretty much on permanently at work so it gets kinda annoying after a while. It has been a while since I've experienced that kind of overexposure of a track.

I admit I don't listen to the radio very often. That said, I'm hardly one of those cretinous sorts who despises all contemporary music on the grounds that "It isn't a classic!" or "It's not rawk!" or such nonsesnse.
Overall, there's a mix of good and bad stuff. While a common criticism is a lot of music in the charts sounds very similar, I suppose one could make the argument that it's always been like that to some extent. Furthermore, I think that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad music, and every so often something that stands out from the crowd breaks through ("I Need A Dollar", one of my favourite new songs of the past few months, certainly sounds distinctive compared to the dance-pop it's sandwiched between).
As you say, though, overexposure can kill a song. I'm pretty sure that there were plenty of radio-listeners in 1970s who'd tune in every week and think, "Is "Bohemian Rhapsody" still number one?". I suppose the stock answer is that we'll have to wait a few years until all the fuss has died down to determine what the best music of the past few years has been with the benefit of hindsight.
What else can I address? I'm not sure. As I say, I'm happy to give my two cents about whatever I can manage.

Slightly random question: does anyone know what the song is that's being used on the current TV Kindle advert? Kinda sounds like The New Pornographers, but I'm not sure...

It's Fly Me Away by Annie Little. Sorry it took ages to get an answer, and you probably already know, just making others aware in case they don't. In other news, I have just recently got into a power metal band called Power Quest. They are similar to DragonForce, with less fast guitaring. They still go along the lines of using lyrics based on fantasy with electronic keyboard sounds, and they have been going for 10 years now but I never up until this point listened to any of their albums. They're awesome.

When you say electronic keyboard sounds, what kind of thing do you mean? Heroes Of Our Time by DragonForce. Power Quest is similar to that, just slower.
