Call me a traditionalist or pure old curmudgeon but I think the site's already starting to look ugly. Images of all shapes and sizes, it just seems a bit messy. But it's something nobody else is feeling and that's fine. I don't know if it's in this thread or another, but I echo the idea that this place looks ugly as hell. I've grumbled my way through numerous gradual Facebook updates, but this... I really don't want to post things on STC-O now :/ Petty, yes, but a five year old has a better chance of throwing together something more visually pleasing. I'm getting "stories from around the web" like "A Mom's Guide to Looking Effortlessly Chic" for goodness sake. I'm out. Aww. I'm sorry Arch, but this is a Proboards thing, we really have no choice. All we can do is reoptimise the themes to the forum or make new ones, but that will take some time. Please bear with us while we find our feet with the new controls. The ad links annoy me too, btw... but they're right at the bottom so they don't bother me too much. As for custom avvies and sigs I'd like to add my thoughts. The theming of the forum is not supposed to be a general Sonic one, but I can understand people want to customise and personalise their forum experience. How about keeping sigs out, because they cause clutter, but having custom avatars but to a restricted size? Just an idea.

Ok, so long as, like you say, there'll be some room for debate and potential change. Personally I'm more annoyed at the "links" at the bottom of the page to stuff which appear to be totally random. Edit: I too am fine with no sigs, they do tend to be cluttery and unnecessary, and usually just serve as advertisements anyway.

This is an STC forum. Probably the only one out there. And it is rather nice that, whatever post you happen to be looking at, you can see a little bit of STC on your screen.

It's also an StC-O forum, and since StC is there in the past and done with, but StC-O is carrying on, the focus should be on that- which would pass through making the forum more accessible to new people. Why not allow them to get their own avatar instead of telling them to choose in a list of images they'll likely not even have read?

I'd like to request an avatar of a rather obscure character: The Yob, from #96 (I think)

Why not allow them to get their own avatar instead of telling them to choose in a list of images they'll likely not even have read? They're just images of characters that in most cases they'll have at the very least surface familiarity with and appreciation of. At least half the avatars are from STC Onlineā¦ This is an STC forum. It would be doing people a disservice not to let them post their thoughts. Doesn't interfere with anyone's ability to post their thoughts. It's more a case of going round your friend's house for dinner and installing your own off-decor furniture for you to use whether your friend wants it there or not. PS If anyone wants some clean images from the last ten issues of STC there's a bunch of them here that I kept over from the STEM days: s12.photobucket.com/user/nowreally/library/stc?sort=3&page=1

I made some, I dunno if you or the admins want to use them though. Edit: Bleedin' 'eck Tom, where did you come from?!

Upon second reading I see you were just saying your bit as well, so sorry about that. Please bear in mind we haven't made any decisions yet, we're still figuring out what this new set up will and won't allow. Having said that, I still think it's worth asking what the forum members would like, but just to clarify; keep it nice, folks!

To me, it's neither metaphor. Neither apply at all.
I just think that it's an easy way of perhaps choosing a picture that means something to you; something that you enjoy or want to share, rather than a picture from a comic we're all here to discuss anyway. We seem to be really hung up on certain rules that just don't make any sense: I can see absolutely no argument for restricting our users in this way.
Still, as Matt says, that's getting us nowhere. Shall we put it to the vote?

Not that anybody asked, but my two-penneth would be a no to images in sigs, sorry! With custom avatars, certainly in this day and age there's no reason for the default avatars to not be a bit bigger now to fill the space better, but I do realise that would be a rather large undertaking for the admin team! Personally I like the fact that the avatars are STC themed - while I could see a finite amount of resources being a problem eventually, I think the forum is dinky enough at the moment that there's plenty of scope for people to pick somthing they like and as the mods have demonstrated they are more than happy to take requests! Custom avatars is such a can of worms, how do you even decide what to allow and what to not? Is photography allowed? Should it stick to being only artwork - what about text? There's a case for wanting to use your own fanart perhaps, which wouldn't be covered by the current system. I would imagine the list of do's and don'ts would be so long that this in itself might put people off bothering, but I'm more open to this than images in sigs. In summation, to muddy the waters of this metaphor even further, the party should provide as much scope as possible for people to express themselves how they choose, but the guests should also try to respect the decor choices and theme of the hosts too.

Thanks Pinch (if I can call you that...)
So how does this work, do I just have to wait for a mod to add them to the list?

It's being voted on, in the poll but if the rules don't change then yeah, you need to wait.

I'll just change to a STC or STCO avatar until its decided?
But I do have a relevant question, what if its a custom made avatar featuring STC and STC-O characters? Say I want an image of Tekno and none of the comics have an image of her that screams Avatar image to me; would it be okay to make my own of her so long as it's within the rated E for everybody range?
