There was just so much Marvel stuff I didn't know what to begin with. Theres a Daredevil/Bullseye collection, which is worth getting for the Bullseye/Electra showdown alone. Ah, Frank Miller... back in the days before he was a xenophobic, bigoted parody of himself.

If you get the "Daredevil: Frank Miller Visionaries" books 2 and 3, you get the entire Elektra saga (including said showdown, at the end of book 2).

Got the Ultimate Knights volume of Ultimate Spidey this weekend and gave it a read last night. God I love Wilson Fisk.
I also picked up books four and five of Penny Arcade's collections, it's wrong to laugh out loud so much to a book. Wrong.

Also, what do you guys think of Deadpool? I think I can speak for all of us (and if I can't I will anyway) when I say if you don't like Deadpool you probably rape chickens.

Buffy season eight is simply terrific. So is Bendis' Avengers. I don't know what parallel universe comics you guys are reading... My faves right now are Amazing Spider-Man (three times a month!) and Secret Invasion (which is what Bendis' Avengers has been leading up to since the very beginning). Also rather loving the new-format Criminal, and my eyes will stain with tears after next week's final Astonishing X-Men by Joss'n'John. She-Hulk, however, has vanished from my standing order pile. It just wasn't the same after Dan Slott left. Actually I rather love Ultimate Spidey as well. I don't miss Bagley even a little bit because Stuart Immonen is an absolute genius. There's lamentably little else I'd actively recommend at the moment though (still ten books is a good lot even if most of them do involve some sort of Spidery person). Buffy Season 8 annoys me cos there are some very good issues in it but there are some dire things in there. Buffy with a lesbian kiss I thought was too fanficcy and Dawn being a giant was...sad. The stories aren't brilliant either and it's just not that captivating. Then again I loved the original series and was always highly sceptical that a comic could envoke the same level of emotion in me as the show. "The Chain" was very close though, and I liked "No Place Like Home". I absolutely despised "No Future For You" though. With a passion. Meh, I might try and give it another chance. Angel Season 6 is at least interesting by giving the nice little twist of Angel being turned back into a human etc.

Giant Dawn is the best thing ever. And I love Buffy's new relationship and how uncomfortable she is in it.

www.cracked.com/blog/2008/06/16/1374/I was reading this for no reason, and since I don't read that series it doesn't really bother me. However, it does raise a question. Is Batton Lash his birth name, or did he adopt it as a pseudonym when he became involved in comic books?

So I got the 3rd part of Justice. Despite it being a bit confusing in the middle about who is fighting who (The Justice League start using their real names and wear armour) it was a great read.

This the new Justice League? Keep meaning to start reading that again. Last I read of the League (besides Batman) was Infinite Crisis. I'm currently reading 52 which I managed to miss out on...

Ah right, was a bit before One Year Later as well. Was tempted to start reading the Marvel Civil War but the backlog of character history put me off as the only character I read in Marvel is The Punisher.

The Marvel stuff is actually quite accessible (unlike the DC stuff) - although Civil War isn't the best place to start. Try New Avengers vol 1.

DC is pretty accessible I think. 52 gave a history of the DC Universe that helped ease new readers in. DC pretty much shot itself in the foot in the way of getting new readers by introducing the Multiverse and constantly changing it's continuity but that all sorted itself with Crisis On Infinite Earth and Infinite Crisis. Next time I'm at Forbidden Planet I'll see if they have New Avengers.

...the two crises are what changed DC's history though. Well, yeah, that and Zero Hour, but it changed it to a much simpler history new readers could grasp easier. Instead of their being X amount of Earths there was just one. But I do get your point, it was a confusing way to make things simple

The constant criticism I've heard is that the Crises didn't make things simpler and easy to grasp because they were inconsistent. Superman and Wonder Woman start from the beginning again, but other titles carry on regardless (Swamp Thing, Batman, The Flash). Continuity gets more convoluted.
Especially when the WW2-era heroes are now from the past and not an alternate universe, so to keep using them in the present and do team-ups DC needs to find "clever" ways for them not to be old and wrinkly.

DC's problem is that it takes its silly characters and concepts way too seriously. everything has to be so realistic in a world where an alien flies around cities in his underwear and a grown man dresses up as a bat every night to fight crime. and let's go overboard with the interconnectivity while we're at it (which too many writers and editors forget, it was only ever meant to be fun, never a burden).
