I've just found out that there's a Marvel comic character called Ebony, who is a black housecat with magic powers belonging to a witch called Agatha Harkness. STC also has a magic black cat called Ebony. Does anyone think Nigel may have got the name from this cat, possibly indirectly, or is this just a fantastic coincidence?

Probably. Though I suspect more as "Agatha Harkness' cat" than "cat with magical powers".

Probably just cos ebony wood is black, shes a black cat, so named her a black thing.
Better than coal the cat. Or something equally as [censored].

What about Onyx or Obsidian? Or do they sound too masculine?

Mmmm... 'Obsidian' is a bit masculine, but Onyx could be a female name (which I actually quite like, come to think of it...)

Ebony just meaning black basically, it's nothing surprising that anyone named Ebony would be black.
I would have thought the origin of her name would be it meaning "Hopelessly deluded" in some foreign language, but can't win 'em all!
Interesting idea, though!
Ooo oo I have one. Black is the color of tragedy. Her faith in Super Sonic is the basis of many a tragedy.

Better than coal the cat. Or something equally as [censored]. If that's not a coincidence, then it's the most brilliant stealth insult I've read all year. But yeah, I did just sort of figure Ebony was so-called because it referred to her colour in as non-racist a way as they could possibly think of at the time. Never heard of the Marvel character before though. If that's not a coincidence, then it's a rather clever reference.

Black is the color of tragedy. Her faith in Super Sonic is the basis of many a tragedy. This is one of those times where a reader gives more thought to a character than the writer themselves did. Speaking of Onyx as a cat name, that just so happens to be my neighbour's wee black cat's name. But yeah, Ebony > black, basically.

I find it funny that you choose to neglect to mention that your cat is called Ebony. My black cat is called Spider. ...And Stiegl. ...And Minnelouche.

My dog is called Wren... because he's brown and pretty wee for a collie-dog But yes, I agree... I think there might be more being read into this than maybe necessary something which I think might also be true with Super Sonic... sorry Tanicius!

I don't remember how I came by the name Ebony. But I was very well aware of Agatha Harkness and her magic cat. There is a goodish chance the name came from there. But it might just be a bit of obvious logic: black cat = magic, Ebony is a cool name for black. I assume Pyjamas came from the expression 'the cat's pyjamas'. I think it must have been that as corny as it is.

This is one of those times where a reader gives more thought to a character than the writer themselves did. Well that post was made mostly in jest, searching for a deeper meaning when there isn't one, but still. Though I do have an unhealthy fixation on Ebony and Super's relationship because of all the questions it raises to me. mabye because when the character was created there was no such idea that one day a fan site would pick up the comic and run it again and do an adaptation of one of the future Sonic games, turning her friendship with Super streassed enough to bring about a world wide devastation? It will be hilarious if another one of Ebony's half-baked attempts is what releases Iblis. I understand she's devoted but... this is increasingly just ignorant fanaticism on her part. Yes, I can see it now! She tries to awaken Super but all she does is cause Sonic to be permanently in the state. Usually, the world is saved by the Super form dissipating just in time... what if thanks to her naivette, the form is made permanent?! Failing that, she splits them into two again, and Super's quick to murder Sonic. No wait. Silver murders Sonic, in turn allowing Super to reign unopposed. Or some such. Many ways to take this. Stillll hoping that the good Super still exists somewhere, of course, weak he may be...

Hell, she goes the extra mile by bringing a demon of mass destruction everywhere she goes. Guess she wants to outdo all the other black cats in terms of bringing bad luck. Oh and while he's butchering everyone like cattle she's all, "It's okay! He wouldn't hurt a fly! "
