Interesting... if doomed to failure. Sorry. but Sonic in a car? Been done before, sucked before, the end. Ah, I see, the past means the future's set in stone, and the fact that a racing game on a portable 8bit console made over decade ago means guarantee failure for a racing game made by a different developer now is doomed just because both games have Sonic in a car.

Rival for the Sonic Cycle? not really as I can't think of a single great sonic game the he's done the sound to, I mean really his musics not in question but lets look at the games sonic r - a bit of fun a best Sonic chronicles: babies first RPG Sonic 3D blast (forshadowing that 3d was a down hill move for sonic) sega super stars tennis, fun but honestly a waste of time... need I really go on now for actual good sonic games sonic 1 sonic 2 sonic 3 and knuckles sonic adventure he's not the composer, so no not the sonic cycle, the sonic cycle is true, this is not plus what sonic fan is 35 :/ I mean they'd have been 17 when sonic came out 19 when stc, archie and the tv show came out, just no in other news, meh not got my hope up for this and it might end up being another sonic game I just don't pcik up.... may rent, but I can't see it being as fun as mario kart, which is all i'd really want from it.

I really don't understand why everyone gets so het up about Jacques... Sonic R's soundtrack wasn't even that good and Sonic Chronicles' was abysmal.
I'd rather have [censored]ing Zebrahead doing the entire soundtrack than Jacques.

Richard Jaques has done other titles, such as Metropolis Street Racer, Headhunter, Jet Set Radio Future, Mass Effect... Jet Set Radio and Mass Effect in particular lauded for their soundtrack, yet people only seem to remember "Can you feel the sunshine?"

Mass Effect had a pretty rubbish sound track too though. I don't understand why that got so much praise either, it was all so dull and boring - the complete opposite of what you want from an RPG, much less an action game.
Does Jacques put out some sort of subliminal message effect or something? Is this the reason everyone else seems to fangasm over him while all his soundtracks just leave me looking for the custom music option?

Why do people rag on the Sonic R soundtrack so much? I thought that it great, perfectly pitched to the setting - light, bouncy, poppy tunes which left a casual, non-technical racer to a pleasant bed to recline in.
Maybe it isn't Berlioz's Grand Messe Des Morts with a batallion-sized orchestra and O Fortuna-esque choral accompaniment so far up the whazoo it's burping out altos, but does it need to be?

YOu ever make it to Therum in the game? That music was ace. I felt it was an ambience that matched the universe very well, with some stand out good beats I love throwing on media player now and again. I wouldn't say it's a soundtrack people would hold up there with greater titles, but it has it's merits and lots of people appreciate it.

I can imagine that it'll be a decent racer that will succeed in killing a few hours of boredom, much like Super Stars Tennis. Apparently it plays a lot like Outrun, so that's a plus. I would think that Sumo Digital just altered the Outrun formula in the same manner that they just altered the Virtua Tennis one of SuperStar Tennis.

Besides, these days its best to take such an approach to prevent yourself from being disappointed later. Doesn't mean it'll be bad - as I said, I'll halfheartedly keep an eye on it - but the track record causes doubts. Also; since there have been the Sonic Riders games, is the only reason why they are making this to provide a competitor for Mario Kart games? I'd have thought the Riders games - being racers - were meant to be competition for Mario Karts already. But I guess the shift to cars/vehicles as opposed to hoverboards is because they're not even trying anymore to make the comparison more obvious.

But I guess the shift to cars/vehicles as opposed to hoverboards is because they're not even trying anymore to make the comparison more obvious. Yes, Riders is a racing game, but then so's Rivals. Rivals is actually closer to Mario Kart, in that there's weapons. Riders didn't have weapons, and was more a pure arcade racer. For a game to rival Mario Kart, it needs tracks with obstacles that can hurt, and weapons. Riders sits in the same group of racing games as Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, and the races in the SSX games, only with a propulsion system attached. This looks more like a kart racer, in the same vein as CTR, and Sonic Drift. There's more than one kind of racing game after all, Personally I think Sonic is most suited to one like Rivals, but as a whole, I think a semi serious racing game could be good. Just so long as the tracks are decent, the vehicles handle well, and the weapons are balanced. That's more important than what it's trying to imitate.

A mental connection I made at work today:
This game is made by Sumo Digital -> Sumo Digital made Outrun 2006, possibly my favourite racing game ever -> I am therefore suddenly excited for this game.
(Okay, I know a large chunk of OR06 was an arcade port, but still...)

I'd rather have [censored]ing Zebrahead doing the entire soundtrack than Jacques. Jacques didn't write any music for Sonic Chronicles, his old pieces were re-mixed into sparse Master System-esque versions. The only new music were the much better battle themes and indoor interludes, written by Steve Sim. That said, I like some of Jacques' work but there are many better musicians they could employ. I'm sure I could recommend a few. Either that or return to the campy Sega tunes they used to make for games of this type with the with the obligatory fast piano-ey bits and wailing synthesizer. Also, I must be the only one who thinks Zebrahead are unfairly criticised, I think one or two people base their criticisms on the one song they were commisioned to perform for Sonic '06, which doesn't represent the music they normally perform. That said, the music they normally perform isn't really that good, generic at best, but there are worse choices.

*Actually likes His World*
Just get Crush 40 to do some cheesy nonsense pop-rock intro and then be intelligent and get Senoue to score the rest of the game. And make sure there are plenty of old remixes like the Angel Island mix he did for Brawl...

Apparently they will be unveiling a new track at E3. Mindless speculation ho!
I'm thinking it will be an Outrun or Daytona track.

I want a remix of "Super Sonic Racing"... Are you serious? The lyrics are the worst I've ever heard! It's like they thought of one line then based the next on the first rhyming word that came to their mind without any thought as to wheather it sounded good!

The first time I ever played Sonic R, and when I heard the theme, I started to laugh. It's awful, awful theme, and some serious thick and stinky pile of bull[censored].

The Sonic R soundtrack is so upbeat and cheesey that it's downright infectious, even if the lyrics make your eyes roll. So yeah, I'd like a remix. It's the most obvious one to do.

I agree. Super Sonic Racing is cheesey to the nth, and this game is clearly going to be a mix of nostalgia and cheese. This needs to be one of those games that doesn't take itself seriously, because the idea itself just isn't serious when you think about it. A blue hedgehog that can run at over seven hundred miles per hour being forced into a car to race, and then racing against (most likely) monkey's who roll around in hamster balls, a news reporter from a space station, and a neckless creature that inhabits peoples dreams. The biggest mistake this game can do is try to be serious, it needs to so a Super Smash Bro's, and have all the characters aware of how ridiculous the situation is, and make fun of it (a la the messages between Fox and his wingmates, and Snake and his support team in Brawl). Hence the cheesey music that gives the nostalgia effect, is perfect.
