man, Sonic fans can be really, really hateful when you get them together en mass sometimes, huh? Bottom line: We don't really know enough about it to make an informed reaction. My first one is of hope and optimism, Unleashed and other recent games have restored my faith in the fact that there is still some talent in Sega's studios, but we'll have to wait and see.

Ha! I just read that thread - they seem to be able to glean a lot of info from a very basic trailer!

Because we have this thing in our chest cavities that pumps blood around our body?
Because we like the nostalgia?
Because we all like anthropomorphic animals way too much?
Phat sonic is phat I dunno.

Except Shadow the Hedgehog.

If Shadow the Hedgehog was the only bad Sonic game in recent years, the franchise would be glimmering. Even as bad as Shadow was, somehow Sonic and the Black Knight managed to make it seem like a superior game. I wonder why people are ever optimistic about Sonic games anymore. Sonic in 2d has remained fairly consistent in the hands of Dimps, so it is possible to make a good modern day Sonic game. Sonic Unleashed also showed that the franchise has some life kicking in it, but of course even that game had an inner conflict between good and terrible. If Sega can resist all the terrible pitfalls they're prone to fall into and just makes a simple, focused, 2d platformer then I think this game has a chance. The moment they announce a new gameplay or playable character is generally when the optimism falls to the floor.

If Sega can resist all the terrible pitfalls There is probably no more literal application of this turn of phrase than when applied to this discussion.

Shadow was pretty good though it could have been better. I actually like the game myself. Secret Rings was the first sonic game I had NO sympathy for....such a horrid little game

Shadow, as I've always said, could have been greatly improved by not recycling the bosses and creating some other ones instead, and not requiring you to effectively play the game through twice, with the only difference being that you switch allegiance on the final mission to get a slightly different ending.

Actually, as I recall, it required you to play through eleven times to experience every ending and the true ending. I tried playing it on a demo pod. Hated it, didn't bother picking up the full version.

Yeah, it is about 11 times in total, but each branch has two separate endings depending on who you ally yourself with in the final mission, so to get every ending, you have to play through the worst storyline, bad storyline, neutral storyline, good storyline and best storyline twice each, just so you can get both endings on that path. It didn't make sense storyline wise either - if you go along the game wiping out humanity and siding with the black aliens, why on Earth would you suddenly protect the president and stop the aliens from winning at the last minute?

I dunno why the supporting cast existing is included in the Cycle. Or why "gameplay looks to be the same old" in this version, since I keep hearing complaints the gameplay keeps using gimmicks and isn't being like the original games. They mean something akin to "same old crap". Not 'old' as in like the original games. The "new" Sonic games have been around for about a decade now, afterall. I also don't get the hate of the 'Sonic Cycle' since the reactions it mentions almost always occur the exact same way with each new game. Because Sonic games are good :] Perhaps if it was still 1994.

The Sonic Cycle?

The 'Sonic Cycle' is kind of annoying - not because it's true or not true (and, really, it pretty much is) - but more because it pretty much validates the people that will off-handedly dismiss something they:
A) Have literally no knowledge about B) Have never played and/or C) Have never seen anything more than a few early screenshots or teaser footage.
There's really no excuse for such vitriolic damnation of a game that barely exists as more than a name and a vague concept. The -real- 'Sonic Cycle' should start less with foolish OTT optimism and more with arrogant snobbish comments from people who have, literally - by means of there being nothing to know - no idea what they're talking about.
This game, in concept, sounds pretty cool. It might be a steaming pile of dog turd, or it might be 'Sonic 4' - either way doesn't really matter right now as it's going to be up to a year before any of us will even know which it'll be.
Besides - people overplay the negative elements of modern Sonic games anyway. The vast majority of them have been mostly enjoyable - even through a fuddled mess of crap animation, acting, silly gameplay choices or plain old bugs. The reason people keep buying them, why they keep looking forward to them when they're announced - why the 'Sonic Cycle' exists and persists - is because they're not terrible games - and they do still provide a fair level of fun. Even amongst their many, varying issues, playing games like Rush, Rivals, Unleashed or Black Knight is still way more enjoyable than half the games on the market today - and if they weren't, they wouldn't sell - and more to the point, no-one would care enough for a 'Sonic Cycle' to ever come to light.

Oh get the [censored] off the high-horse. I bet you've never gone for hype in anything, right? Or said something will suck from a few bits of information. If anyone says they haven't they're bloody lying. It's not like there isn't precedent for the cynicism either (just because you found the games enjoyable doesn't mean everyone did), so don't go making people out to be baseless haters.

If you don't enjoy them, why the [censored] are you buying them? With, y'know, your money.
I would fully expect people that continue to buy games within a series to have enjoyed them to some degree - because otherwise they're [censored]ing morons.
