Because Sonic 4 is awful. And, like I said, level design (albeit, in the actual design of the level flow and mechanics, rather than the actual graphical design of the levels - which is universally lazy) is one of the few things the game really does right. What little I've played of the DS version so far also manages to do that, albeit with a few complaints as I mentioned before. (Also, it's amusing to see you say "Sonic 4 is awful" and use that spoiler information to indicate that Sonic Colours is good in the same post - given that it also describes Sonic 4...)

Yes it is. Just realised that.
The trouble I have with Sonic 4's level design is that there seems to be too many set pieces. The ball rolling in Lost Labyrinth, The Homing Attack into the pack of cards on Casino Street. Plus all it seems to do is highlight how bad the physics are.
I suppose Sonic 4's level design isn't too bad in places. I mean Mad Gear actually does nearly feel like a good level rather than a homage to Metropolis.
I do wonder if they are ever going to try and make another go of 3D momentum based platforming? Or am I to be stuck playing Super Monkey Ball and Marble Blast Ultra.

I'll have my copy on the DS coming either today or tomorrow, depending on postal times. Thank god I got it at 18 quid because it went back up to 23 quid on one of the cheapest online sites last week. Yay!

Just tried the DS version, and it seems pretty good. Nice structure, music's good, but it really misses the trick system.

I've been doing price comparisons of the DS version today round the shops. Might get it tomorrow, and get the Wii version for Christmas. It's looking very promising, might as well sample one side of it straight off. Looking forward to it.
....
Well it's now Friday, I've bought the DS version from Asda and had a quick crack at it. It is very much like Rush, which is never a bad thing. Played the tutorial and one act so far, it's a cracker. Haven't been introduced to the wisps yet, like, but I'll find that out when I get back in the run up to teatime.
And I'll be requesting the Wii version for Christmas, natch.

Impressions on the DS version, which I finished last night (not yet with all emeralds)
No plot details, but I'm going to be giving a lot away regarding structure and mechanics, so look away if you don't want to know.
- The game's levels are generally longer and more involved than those of its predecessors, and there are more alternate routes. Until the sixth zone, there's barely any danger of bottomless pits, but no shortage of ways to die.
- The aforementioned sixth zone is really, really tough without being unfair, and as a result is probably the best Sonic level on handheld. There's a section towards the end that requires pixel perfect manoeuvring, and cost me over 10 lives. The level as a whole is a good 7 minutes when you don't know what you're doing.
- Wisps complement the gameplay nicely and don't slow it down, except for the last one, but whenever you use that it's usually tense enough a situation that you don't care.
- The bosses are great, and a bit different to the norm. Annoyingly, one of them is a rehash/reskin of an earlier boss, as in Sonic Rush. It's a fun fight and sufficiently changes it up (into almost a Puzzle Boss), but still a little aggravating.
- Special Stages are the best on handheld. By far.
- Music's generally good, not quite as memorable as the Naganuma (sp?) music.
- Side characters are used sparingly, in optional missions that you unlock as you play. The missions unlock illustrations, music and events. I've ran into Blaze, Cream, Big, Silver, Rouge and Knuckles so far. There was even a mention of Marine in-dialogue with Blaze, a nice bit of continuity. I hope she turns up.
- Hidden throughout the levels are medals, five on each stage. Don't worry, you don't have to collect them to progress. I don't know what they do yet, but they're well secreted away, and some can only be accessed with Wisps you gain later in the adventure, requiring you to replay levels in order to unlock everything.
- Some of the dialogue is actually funny. I laughed.
Basically Sonic Colours DS is Rush 3, and another refinement. The extraneous sailboat stuff has been removed, and the map has been streamlined nicely and sensibly. There's an absolute wealth of content, and it just may be the last DS game I really love. The lack of minigame-ness (besides a baffling "Touch the Wisp" thing that takes 15 seconds a turn and makes you wonder why they even bothered) makes the game a lot shorter than its immediate predecessor, but you ought not to care.
I'm yet to acquire all seven emeralds, but when I do I'll add more.

The only particularly bad thing I see going on in Colours Wii is the "GOOD! GREAT! AWESOME! OUTSTANDING! AMAZING!" you get for what appears to be pressing a button a few times at specific points. That is just the worst and I don't get how that made it out the door.
Everything else about this looks very good though yeah

Played into the second world of the DS game so far. Overall, it's a really solid title with a lot more depth than you initially expect. Almost every single level has a half dozen ways through it - and that's before the Wisp powers come into play and increase that total further.
It really just shows how much better Sonic 4 could have been if DIMPs had tried to make their own game with it too, rather than just rehashing all the tropes and cliches from the older Sonic games. This game would be great on a big screen.

Played through all of the basic story (not got all the emeralds yet) with missions. The last one with Shadow/Omega is a severe pain in the arse, you need such precise timings for it...

Has anyone played through both? Having heard good things I'm interested in picking this up, but if playing one is just like playing the other I'll put more thought in to the version I want.

I want my copies to arrive. Really really hoping they get here before I go up to Scotland on Wednesday, for I plan to be playing the DS version on the way there x.x Can't wait to play it. I've been horribly horribly impatient ever since I tried it at Summer of Sonic because it was a lot of fun back then. Of course, I can wait a bit longer but it feels like forever when you want it XD Speaking of Summer of Sonic, the Sonic Colours video that Nintendo shot there is up on the Nintendo Wii Channel (Europe only as far as I can tell). Featuring gameplay, squee-ing fans, me blathering about how you should form your own opinion by playing it yourself, and the group of cosplayers (also with me in there, heh ^_^; ). Jun Senoue explains a bit about the music style in it too. Edit: Games have arrived, off I go to check them out

Personally I don't think the demo at Summer of Sonic did the finished game any favours.
Been playing through the Wii version and near to the end now. There have been some frustrating elements (those lollipop swings on Sweet Mountain were unbelievably picky, and the level design in the later stages is getting downright murderous), but on the whole I've found it a hell of a lot better than other Sonic games of the last ten or so years; not great, but definitely an improvement.

My DS copy came at ten past 10 this morning, although it's my Xmas present from my mum, and she's adamant that it's not to be played till then. Damn it to Hell.

Has anyone played through both? Having heard good things I'm interested in picking this up, but if playing one is just like playing the other I'll put more thought in to the version I want. I have, now. Both games follow pretty much the same storyline and have the same level concepts, but they play as hugely differently as the Master System and Megadrive Sonic games. I'd definitely say they have enough unique experiences in both to be worth playing both. That said, so far, I have to say that outside of the story stuff (which, incidentally, is great - it's proper saturday morning cartoon humour), the DS version is stronger than the Wii version. The Wii version level design, while better the further through the game you get, just never seems as good as the DS version. It is also far more confusing with regards to the Wisp powers than the DS version. On the DS one, you get a tutorial for each power, on the Wii, you're left to figure it out, often at the last moment.

Have now finished Colours DS with all emeralds. Beaten all the missions, just getting the medals now.
Game is awesome. Best (Nintendo) handheld Sonic.

I'm on the (what I believe to be) final boss of the Wii version. If it IS the last boss, then the game is depressingly short.
Everything else about it is great. It's Unleashed HD daytime with a million times more depth. The wisps are a great addition and aren't overly intrusive, the music and visuals are amazing, the voice acting is better than it's ever been, the script is fantastic.
There's a lot more slowed down platforming sections than Unleashed- as in, actual platforming and not just an arbitrary couple of platforms for you to jump on and then giving up and making you go really fast again.
The game lacks the kind of "epic" feel of the daytime Unleashed levels' majesty where everything was there to wow and amaze you and look awesome. Colours has that still, but toned down in favour of letting you play the game yourself instead of watching a demo.
Overall, it kept everything good from Unleashed and did away with everything that sucked.
Things I like that shall be spoilered:
There are no characters besides Sonic, Tails, Robotnik and two little (fairly amusing) helper robots and one wisp. Tails takes a role as Sonic's support character, as he should.
They've brought back a couple of classic badniks. It's a nice little retro throwback without feeling uncreative like Sonic 4. I [censored]ing loved it when the Motobugs showed up.
Conclusion: best 3D Sonic game ever released. Not saying much, but it really is a fun game.

yes, it truly deserves, all the merits, I LOVE IT! still....I dunno there is a little something of the Daytime Unleashed that I liked better in the last game....though I'm not really sure what......mabe the scenario and backgrounds were more epic more spectacular. Mabe THAT'S the onlly thing missing in this game......infact the onlly thing I miss from Unleashed is the GRAND opener movie style! THAT WAS AMASING! I hopped I found one similar here, because that was one of the best things of that game......
anyway Orbot and Cubot are (in my opinion) a good addition! ^_^ They are funny just as any Eggman helper should be. Definetly like them.
But guys the secret of success was in the HAPPY TREE FRIENDS!!! They done it all! XDXD

There are no characters besides Sonic, Tails, Robotnik and two little (fairly amusing) helper robots and one wisp. Does not apply to the DS version, where nearly every character shows up in some form. Personally, I found the DS version OK, but it lacked humour, I didn't find it funny, it felt forced and painful to view. :/

Completed the Wii version, and am about a third of the way through the Red Star count. It's so pretty, even my brother stands around to watch it and constantly comments on how gorgeous it is for a Wii game. It is a bit shorter than I'd hoped, but I don't mind, I genuinely had fun on it. There's so much more they could've put in there, but I guess they're keeping it for future games. One thing that really gets to me every time. The new drowning animation. Yes. I deliberately made Sonic drown to see what'd happen. I wish I hadn't, it made me feel ever so guilty! Not to mention the little animation for the countdown too. It's the little touches like that that really bring the character out, makes the game much more interesting for me
