Inspired by some amount of Mega Man playing. What are those songs that, no matter how many remixes or remasters you hear of them, are always better in their original 8-bit/16-bit format? Mines is this (shut up, it's from 2008, I know, still 8-bit).
Oh, and this, of course.

Martian Alert and Revenge on GBC are underrated to the point of criminality. Amazing games.
Anyway, I like chiptunes so I'll contribute this'n:

Two more from me. I need to go back and complete this game. It was quite good, as far as I can remember. Apparently this tune was a remix of sorts of the title screen of a game for the Commodore 64 called Comic Bakery. Both soundtracks were done by the same guy, who apparently could only compose one tune. If this were the only tune I ever composed though, I'd be dead chuffed, and put it in everything. There you go. Piece of crappy trivia you don't give a [censored] about and will never need to know. For free. And also this. From Mega Man again (i r not predictable). No matter how many remixes I hear, this is the definitive version for me, and is probably one of my favourite video game tunes of all time. Make no mention of CRASH!! (Let's do it).

I think I may have to rebuy them. Perhaps the most enjoyable use of the link cable that doesn't involve Pokémon. And mega yes to Crash Man's theme, fantastic tune!

@madhair & L.T.: Have either of you managed to access the link-up only "bonus missions" in Martian Alert, by any chance? I'm guessing about 1% of people who have bought the game have actually managed to do that.

I'm guessing about 1% of people who have bought the game have actually managed to do that. Yep. Fortunately, by a twist, a friend of my mum's gave me their unwanted GBC, so not only did I have both games but I had two GBCs and a link cable, so it was much easier than finding a friend with either of those components. The extra stuff seemed that little bit harder to me, but it was great going back to areas in Alert that seemed confusingly inaccessible before. It's a shame you can't really replay missions after completing everything, as I'd like to have gotten something more for filling the portrait galleries.

Class. I found it disappointing that it was necessary to find someone else with the game to get access, except not one other person owned the game (even if someone did, there's no guarantee I would have won the head-to-heads, whatever they were). I did find various areas around the map where I guessed the secret missions would be, such as the metal trapdoor on the island where you encounter Taz, and the gymnasium.
It's such a shame those extra missions, as well as the extra playable characters, went largely to waste because of this. Also disappointed with how Mot is only playable for one mission and that's it (but a great mission, nonetheless). Such a great game, fantastic script, decent music. Tragically underrated.
Edit: To get back on topic another song from the same game. Like Warning of Puyo Puyo (from Puyo Puyo, obviously) and Marginal Consciousness (from Battle Garegga), this track seemed to just keep transposing up forever rather than loop.

Thanks a lot, that'll be in my brain for the next fortnight! I'd like to nominate one from S3&K (though the entire soundtrack is marvellous): Sonic remixes are often awesome but, for me, there's no beating the original Doomsday Zone.

Sonic remixes are often awesome but, for me, there's no beating the original Doomsday Zone. Ooh, I'd have to disagree there. I thought that Project Chaos' remix of it beats the original, especially when they screw the whole remix part of it at the end and go into a ridiculously complex section. Plus, there's a part of the solo which is from Judas Priest's Electric Eye. Of course, each to their own, but I prefer that version.

In a rare aversion, I have to cite the Labyrinth Zone's music (Game Gear version) as being better in 16-bit form than 8-bit form. Although it wouldn't be as good any further than that.

Man, that doesn't sound like Labyrinth Zone music. Its more like Funky Industrial Town Zone Act 1. Also, technically its a remix because its an 8 bit game music made with 16 bits. Or something.

It's good, but it's not the Sonic music advertised Two other classic Sonic 8-bit tunes: I'd also nominate Underground Zone if it weren't for the Sonic Goes UG Mix track in Gems Collection, which really captures the spirit of the Zone.

I do especially like the version of S3&K's final boss (pre-Doomsday) tune from the same channel, which has always been one of my all-time favourite in-game tunes.

I agree, ANYTHING SnappleMan lays a finger on is instantly better. However, Im very surprised no ones mentioned the frankly awesome Sonic 2 (8-bit), Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble soundtracks:

The Sparkster/RKA series is, at least to my opinion, the reigning king of 16-bit music.
RKA1 - Boss Music
One of the most threatening and epic boss musics in gaming history.
RKA1 - Space Flight
Takes a second to get into it, but it's wonderously fantastical.
RKA2 (MD) - ...almost every damn level!
Roaring into action as the hero, no better music, it's pretty much "Sparksters Theme" and has been repeated a few times...
...like here, where it's remixed for the latter half of Stage 1 into a less energetic but more paragonic theme (I think I made that word up)
Airship Battle
Duel with Axel Gear. Smegging fantastic.
Then we have the SNES version, which has just one Crowning Music of Awesome moment which you simply have to see the level intro to get properly. It uses another remixed version of Sparkster's "theme" and is possibly the best of them.
Just wait till the cannon fires...
As for why this is better in 16-bit? Just try comparing it to the unbelievably pathetic "Rocket Knight" music in the modern continuation of the series which ended up being a complete trainwreck.
It tried to do "Sparkster's Theme" again....it failed.
Lacks all the energy, pacing and heroic nature of the 16-bit ones.

Due to some requests by people who are having trouble with opening this thread on the account of TONS OF EMBEDS, can I please make a request from the next page onwards we make it links only instead of embeds?
Just for the benefit of all users, thank you. I'll change all these to links soon enough.

Because I'm so completely bored today, I've been skulking around the forums, and thought I'd give this thread a bump. Had you told me back in 2002 I would [censored] myself at a 2D game for the Game Boy, I would have laughed at you. Not now. Or now.I know this isn't really an oft-remixed tune, but it stands out in my head as one of the most atmospheric moments in games. In fact, if you want atmosphere, Metroid Fusion's a powerhouse. Should I just change this topic to a general chiptune discussion..?
