This is why you don't buy things before a Steam sale! I managed to outwit the Steam sales the other day, by not buying Fallout 3 DLC about a week ago. Guess what went on sale yesterday? Steam FTW.

I got this for Christmas and haven't done much else since. I adore it, completely. The amount of nostalgia in missions is overwhelming in places.
Question, though: Is Planet Wisp representative of Colours completely? Because I'm not sure I like it.

Question, though: Is Planet Wisp representative of Colours completely? Because I'm not sure I like it. no... and in fact planet wisp as seen in generations if very different. Not sure if that would make you like it more or less but it is different for example - annoying rockets and other artificial attempts to heighten the difficulty of a level that was originally mid game are missing
- not a focus on only one wisp power per act
- no green long green section at the start of the acts.
- more acts split in to smaller chunks... e.g a more platforming based act, and fast paced 3d act, a mostly 2d puzzle and wisp using act etc.
personally I prefer the story and level structure of colours over generations, but there both competent Sonic games.

Planet Wisp doesn't rank among my favourite Colours zones.
Now Starlight Carnival and Aquarium Park....

Planet Wisp is, despite being an environmentalist paradise, the Eggmanland of Generations. All of a sudden, the difficulty shoots THROUGH THE ROOF(at least it did for me) compared to all the other stages. No pun intended due to the Rocket Wisps.
Now, it's not as bad in absolute terms as Eggmanland, but relative to the rest of the stages, it certainly is. I didn't die on any of the others except once; I died countless times on Planet Wisp.
At least the difficulty was proper; usually the most difficult sections aren't near the end. But Planet Wisp, Egg Dragoon, and the Time Eater certainly take the cake in difficulty.

Yeah, as far as Colours goes, Planet Wisp is my favourite level. It's nothing like the Generations iteration. The Generations one was a low point, to be honest.

Oh, I know there were riots over the remix of the tune. Ah well, can't win 'em all. It was bound to not be as successful anyway, being the newest of the stages. At least everything else was a-okay! (Well sans the lack of an actual theme song to allow for an epic final boss theme as has been the case for 12 years but I suppose I can make do)

Modern or classic version? Because I quite liked classic, and all modern was missing was the bassline. Both, from what I can gather. Seems there was quite a bit of hate for them, or at least a noticeable amount. I assume that since the track is new, it just didn't have quite the same epicness that say, a remix of Big Arm or the Death Egg Robot would have.

Speaking of tunes, I've been seeing a fair bit of dislike for the Radical Highway modern version. I personally like it's strippeddownness, as it provides a driving background intensity that isn't too in-your-face, but I'm guessing a lot of people don't like it because of how different it is to the classic version, which is effectively the original with a bit more noise. Still good, though.
Can't speak for the levels though, as I've not got the 3DS.

Also speaking of tunes, I'm loving the classic versions of some of the modern tunes, especially Speed Highway and especially especially City Escape. I like the option to choose your own music, too, but there's obviously a bit of conflict over what I would have preferred to be in the game.

I'm mad they didn't include any of the orchestra final bosses from previous games as options.
I don't care for the Time Eater's theme that much - while foreboding, a Sonic boss is supposed to have an upbeat them as much as an ominous one. Every final boss in the last 12 years, more or less, has followed this trend.
I'd like to be able to fight the Time Eater to Perfect Dark Gaia or Egg Nega Wisp or some such.

Assuming 360 for the format:
Stick a few tracks onto a USB, insert it into one of the USB ports on the front of the console, play desired track(s) during game (it will replace whatever songs are meant to play during). Job's a good 'un.
At least I think so, I haven't actually done this since the original "blades" interface and am not sure if the newer ones support it.
EDIT: Just checked. It does.

So I bought my friend the Casino Nights DLC on the Valve Steam.
Its a lot better than Duke Nukem Forever's pinball segment/mini game whatever.
So yeah.

Casino Night came free with my copy of the game :X Not that I noticed until about 3 weeks later. Pretty fun, but I don't know what I'm doing during the times the ball's not actually in the machine.

So a few months on and we know that the game's received near-universal praise, and indeed a number of us here like it very much. Once again, Yahtzee has a rather different opinion. Now that he's brought it up, the comparisons with the Resident Evil series seem really apt...

You know, I think he lost all his venom on Mario 3D Land.
This week; Sonic Cycle, grr characters, nostalgia trip, modern Sonic sucks.

Hahaha yeah that's all he can ever say with Sonic games.
Glad to see plenty of his comments disagree with him, however... PLENTY.
I'd say Sega's problem is they can't decide whether to listen to the retro individuals or the next gen individuals. Toning down the story and focusing more on Sonic himself seems to have correlated with better reviews and sales(though one can look at SA2B's sales as far as I know and see that the correlation isn't always there). Either way, their constant confusion results in a crash course for a fun game or a disaster every year. I liked how their original plan was maintaining a more modern feel for the mainstream game, while cashing in on the retro market with Sonic 4. They need to tweak it a bit, still, but I think it's a good compromise.
But, to heck with his opinion. I like that SEGA actually wanted to create a game that appealed to next gen and retro fans, which it should as it has stages all of us remember from some point. For me, I remember all of them.
Granted, I have no idea why they chose to celebrate Sonic 2006, but I guess it's the fact that game wouldn't have been so bad if they'd worked out the bugs and didn't have such a messed up plot. I mean, alternatively, they could have included Shadow 05, which would have been HILARIOUS.

Well, Yahtzee isn't really a reviewer so much as a parody series, it's more the joke if he actually likes any game.
Can't say I really disagree with Yahtzee on this one though, for all the parody. I found myself nodding quite a lot, especially on the inability to properly explore.

And yet Yahtzee is more effective at selling me on a game than any number of print reviewers. He just gets the enthusiasm or disregard over so well.

Never mind satire and parody are a great way to sell a serious argument. See the Colbert Report or the Daily Show's success in keeping people interested in politics. It informs, but also entertains. Can't say I really disagree with Yahtzee on this one though, for all the parody. I found myself nodding quite a lot, especially on the inability to properly explore. I'll definitely give them the exploration part. I had hoped for some Adventure fields... but nope, Sega didn't show interest. It was one of the good things about Unleashed to me.

I reckon Generations does the exploration slightly better than Colours did. At least there doesn't seem to be any invisible walls this time around.

Either way, the Adventure fields would be a nice touch, I'd think. Those are, as far as I know, one of the things well-liked about the Adventure era, so having world hub fields make a return could be neat. Especially if they're not super slow like Sonic 06's.
I also liked how Unleashed would have you search for the upgrades, in Adventure fashion, rather than letting you buy them.

I reckon Generations does the exploration slightly better than Colours did. At least there doesn't seem to be any invisible walls this time around. No invisible walls, but many many places where you either jump down, and can't get back up, go from 3D to 2D with a zipline/canon/something else, and can't return, or many things hidden with collapsing platforms that don't respawn. Seriously, the way I managed to get the five rings in each planet wisp level, was with a video guide, and suiciding everytime I messed up on a non-returning temporary platform, making sure not to touch any checkpoints if I missed a ring.
