Super Mario Bros X is a fanmade editor and engine for making your own Super Mario games, based on a myriad of elements from Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and World, amongst other games. It's very easy to make your own levels and compile them into an overworld, using the many preset items or indeed customising your own. I've been having fun with it for a while now, and I thought it would be cool if we could collaborate on a level pack, "Super STCO Bros" or something. Something better named, obv. Whatever. Honest, it's easy - it's not easy-but-secretly-impossible. Doesn't require any rom hacking, and you can bosh out a level in, ooh, ten minutes. We could upload our stages to Mediafire or something, and I could combine them into a bigger overworld. You can make as many or as few levels as you want. Super Mario Bros X is now available here - the official site took it down. It's very user-friendly and comes with documentation, but I can help out anyone who needs any advice. Oh, and it's PC only, silly Mac users.

Here's the one and only rule - save your .lvl files as madhair60-01.lvl, with your username replacing mine, and the 01 replaced with whichever number level it is.
Edit: Actually, for the sake of consistency, I will edit in a few other rules later, to assure that our efforts don't amount to crap.

It's short(ish) and a bit tricky, single SMW Exit.
Edit: It's single player, if that's a problem I can tweak and reupload it.
EditEdit: Tweaked for 2-player, included Yoshi coins, and slightly adjusted level/enemy placement. Oh, and background stuff. Lots of it.
EditEditEdit: Coin path updated.

No, no, single player is best.

Rules, basically copied verbatim from another forum:
- Constructive criticism is pretty much universally accepted, but actually editing other people's levels is only okay if they say it is.
- Always put starting locations for both players. (In case of AWESOME, that's why.)
- The game can only support one checkpoint per level. If you have multiple checkpoints, the first one the player hits will be the only one that counts.
- Levels should be winnable without being forced to take a hit.
- Never trap the player. If a certain item or powerup is needed to progress in the level, make sure it either respawns, or the player can die if he lost it.
- Enemies should always work the way they did in the game they're originally from.
- All water and waterfalls should be swimmable.
- Invisible blocks should never be made necessary to finish the level.
- Never put Lakitu in any area where you can scroll the screen vertically. He'll try to compensate by approaching infinite speed.
- The SMB3 Lakitu enemy is ruthless and can only throw those green rolling spinies. Instead of using him, pick the NPC you want and make sure the "Lakitu" option on the left side of the NPC panel is set to "yes". This will create a much tamer SMW Lakitu who will throw that NPC regularly.
- Only five Yoshi coins, or none. Not one, or two, or six. Five, or none.
- Remember that if you put a powerup in a block, it will be a mushroom if Mario is small. Putting just mushrooms will mean they'll always be mushrooms no matter what. (Hammer and Tanooki suits will always be suits, as well.)
- If you have horizontal warp pipes, don't put the warp on center or it'll look weird when you enter. Always put the warp on the floor. Also, make sure any such pipes have a floor or block in front of them you can stand on, even if they're underwater.

Had tons of time to kill today. Have two levels. Long desert level. *Link removed* Edit: Desert level re-upped. Meduim-to-Long dungeon/castle/fortress level, with a boss. *Link removed* Edit: Link fixed.
And here's a short overview of some basics to show you folks how easy it is, since I've been asked about it a couple of times in the chatroom. You choose your tiles and drop them onto the level window and arange them however you want.Pick a background, some music, place the player start location. Place item boxes, and scroll through the little bar under the picture to place pretty nearly anything inside the "?" box, or use the buttons underneath to skip straight to specific power-ups.Place warps and doors to move between levels, screens, or places in the level that are otherwise inaccessable.Drop a few enemies in, a few friendly NPCs, objects, whatever you want, and the level goal, leaving you with a playable level. Click test play at the top of the main window to try it out. That took me longer to crop, upload, and type out than it did to make the actual level.

Hooray. Double post.
I officially have no social life, officially.

I don't even know what this is. It's short and full of hidden goodies though.
EDIT: not really a propper level, I guess. Perhaps the beginnings of one though...

Might have a go. Waiting for the point when we can hack characters and make Bowser into Megajerk.

Twilight Falls. www.mediafire.com/?cvpl0hwl5qrr5rxA very short level for the player to take a breather and gain a few lives. EDIT: Apparently, me putting the link in a clickable word breaks it. Twice. So just the link on it's own now. I will also be updating this level. Need to make some changes.

Level's 01-04 updated.04 is now a very frustrating Light/Dark World based level. Possibly not worth including. I've tried to fix any problems I've encountered or had pointed out, if anyone spots any more please let me know.

You can edit graphics, but I don't know how. It shouldn't be too hard, though. Edit: Also, I'm really pleased with how this is going - Asha, Nate, I'll play your levels this evening, then I'll bug you about them next chance I have. I think we need to lay down some boundaries for this "episode", that is, the number of worlds, levels, themes etc. I'm thinking, out of tradition, we could have 8 worlds with x levels in each, and a secret ninth world. Just keep making as many levels as you want, and I'll put them in order of difficulty/theme appropriateness later. For the overworld, I'm thinking Mario 64 style castle, not a SMW style map. To wit, I suggest that everyone make their exit a Super Mario Bros 3 Star. That way, I can use Star collection to track progression and make the experience cohesive.

So um, I've made one too. TomJ-01 :B Don't reckon it's particularly difficult; should be fairly forgiving.

I had a lot of fun with your level Tom, especially since there were a few ways to navigate it. I lost a coupla lives in the process though

Thanks New one, not really a level as such; rather a way for the player to pick one of three levels (or a fourth "secret" one). Destroy a block to choose a floor (left-to-right, floors 1-3; top, 4) and Mario will automatically trot off to it. Obviously you'll need to add in the warp-y things for those go-to levels. Also, each floor has a different number of coins (top one has an extra life) that Mario collects on his way out, so it would make sense that the easiest level is the lowest floor with least coins and the hardest is the top floor with the life :B

My jaw dropped when I got what I was supposed to be doing, up until that point I was absolutely bamboozled so some in game instructions would be a nice touch. I checked the entire thing out in the editor, it's niiiice.

I like your level, Tom J, not sure about the other thing - I think it's clever, but I can't see where it would be used.

No probs To be honest it's not quite as I wanted it anyway. The amount of control the editor gives you over stuff is really limited :/ Anyway, here's a new level. difficult :V edit: could be useful for transitioning from one world to the next

Amusingly, on the previous level (elevator), I climbed up, hit the secret button, Mario automatically walked down and positioned himself halfway on the elevator, which rose up and crushed him against the ceiling.

I've just downloaded this, but I'm useless at the level editing stuff, but if I do create one I'll post it up later.
