Inspired by this in the 3DS thread: the new ones have moved past that initial "good for a launch title, but we won't call it one of the consoles must-have games by the time this console has ceased being supported" hump. That's an interesting point: has any console ever had a launch game that was considered one of the machine's all-time classics after its life was over? I'm racking my brains... ...Oh, wait, Mario 64. Oh, and Super Mario World was a SNES launch game, wasn't it? So I can come up with a grand total of two. Have there been any other launch games on any console that became must haves for any system upon it's death? At what point does the first genuine "must have" usually appear? I know I can't think of any, but then I'm rubbish at even remembering what was and wasn't a launch title. I'd agree that Mario 64 probably is one for the N64, but then at the same time it probably wasn't when it was re-released for the DS. I mean there have been a lot of disasters on launch (The Bouncer for PS2 is usually top of that list), but barely any real memorable launch titles. Part of that is probably because sequals do it better. Who wants to play an older game that's good, when the sequal took everything that was good, got rid of the bad, and made the whole thing much better for it. But really, there has to be more good launch titles with staying power, than the two Samface came up with.

As Oak pointed out in the 3DS thread, the NES launched with Super Mario Bros. I'd sort of half-suggest Sonic Adventure, I still have a lot of fondness for that game even now. I know I'm probably in a very considerable minority there, mind. Oh, and Luigi's Mansion, while possibly not quite a classic, is rather under-rated, I feel. I wish I hadn't flogged my copy... So yeah, I can't come up with any cast-iron classiWAITAMINUTE Okay, so it was a port, but say "Tetris" even now and you think of the GB version.

Would Timesplitters, SSX or Tekken Tag Tournament qualify for ps2 launch titles, or does that fall under your remit of "the Sequels did it better"?

The first Timesplitters was awful. Doesn't rank as a "must-have".

Halo.
It wasn't just a fantastic title at launch. It pretty much launched the console rather than the other way around.

Hi. Rayman on PS1. I'm pretty sure it was a launch title, anyway. Edit: Just checked, yeah it was, but only in North America. Still counted.

GameCube had Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (lol) and I think Rogue Squadron 2 may have been a launch title.

Tekken Tag was pretty good and I don't think qualifies for "the sequels did it better". It was followed by Tekken 4- generally considered the black sheep of the franchise- and then Tekken 5 which was actually really good.
However, Tekken Tag was... well, unique. Because of tag battles and that. The later games aren't (in my eyes) real sequels to Tekken Tag. They didn't keep the good, improve the good and remove the bad- Tekken Tag stays true to the foundations of Tekken 3 with some more characters and features and is generally among the most well-regarded of the franchise, while Tekken 4, 5 and 6 changed a Hell of a lot, to the point where they weren't intrinsically better or worse than Tag, but just different.
Also, Sonic Adventure deserves a bit of credit. While it's obviously crap, it is the first game that most people would assosciate with the Dreamcast. Almost unfairly, really, as the Cast had loads of better stuff to offer.
Also, while I don't particularly like them, I believe Killzone 2 and Resistance: Fall of Man were really popular titles that people very much assosciate with the PlayStation brand, and they were both PS3 launch titles.
Halo, despite being crap, also qualifies as iconic and stuff.
Let's also not forget Twilight Princess.

While I wouldn't go as far as to call it a Must Have I thought Resistence was a pretty good launch title for the PS3.

I think Rogue Squadron 2 may have been a launch title. I seem to recall reading that in either the UK or US it was actually on sale a couple of days before the console itself. Go figure. Also, I found out this morning that in the US at least, Pilotwings was a SNES launch title.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Luigi's Mansion Super Mario 64 DS
and I'm in that minority that liked SA1, even if I've played it to death now. Those are basically my favourite launch titles.

Wasn't Mario Kart 64 a launch title? Nah, the N64 only had 2 launch titles, Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64.
