Not gonna go into it again. If you want my explanation, I'm sure it was in reply to one of your topics about the games anyways, so it shouldn't be hard to track down. As I said then, it could be a rose-tinted thing, but as far as I'm concerned, Sonic 2 will always win out over S3&K.

THE PIPES IN CHEMICAL PLANT HAVE MORE THAN ONE DESTINATION!?!?!?!?!?!? Yes. Yes they do. Try holding the direction you want to go while in the pipe to go somewhere new. I think as a default they take you the fastest way, or it might have something to do with the amount of rings you have. S3&K - Better game. S2 - Better memories. And it was cheaper.

S3&K - better than chocolate. S3&K - better than a great time with some great friends. S3&K - better than making love to a beautiful woman. S3&K - better than life itself.

According to hackers at Sonic Retro, the direction of the tubes is determined by the timer. Likely the even/odd thing as said in this thread.

Sonic 1 GG was my first ever game ever ever too. So amazing. The music is awesome, the levels are bright and vibrant, even Scrap Brain isn't pooey. Sky Base is kinda meh but whatevs. Robotnik's theme is so catchy it's crazy. The first three Zones, as have been said, are all variations on "green/forest" but, you know, it helps the game's aesthetic.
Sonic 2 MD is an improvement on its big brother in almost every way. It looks better, it sounds better, the physics have been added to with a new move and the level design is cool. As with Sonic 1 GG, the fact there are some similar looking levels (bear in mind Aquatic Ruin was meant to be Neo Green Hill Zone and Hill Top Zone is basically Emerald Hill Zone But Blue And With Fire) adds to the aesthetic of the game. The natural levels are better looking than the mechanical levels (and Chemical Plant looks a damn sight better than Metropolis and the very flat Wing Fortress). The music is truly fantastic, no gripes here.
And, for it all, I'm not likely to replay it very often. It's a solid game it's just... it doesn't grab me often enough. As I said, it improves on the original in about every way but, once you finish it, there's not a lot to come back for unless this is your big favourite Sonic game. One I can play from time to time, but not one I can actively kill time with.

What similar looking levels are there in Sonic 1 SMS/GG?
Green Hill, Bridge, Jungle, Labyrinth, Scrap Brain and Sky Base, right? They're all very distinct.

Bridge is basically Green Hill with a bit of water, really. Jungle is visually different but still a variation on foresty greenery. Not a criticism in the least, those are probably my three favourite levels in the game.

Jungle Zone is [censored]ing ace. Best level in the whole game.

Not a criticism in the least, those are probably my three favourite levels in the game. Nah, Bridge is totally different in feel. Bridges, obviously - the complete open feel, the rushing water, fish attacking from below, the mechanisms you use to propel yourself, the large rocks. It's very distinct. The tone of the music, the atmosphere, the autoscrolling second level. Jungle is nothing like Green Hill, or Bridge. If you say it's similar for having greenery (which Bridge has barely any of), then you might as well say all Sonic levels are the same. In fact, I'd go so far as to say no two acts feel the same in Sonic 1 GG/SMS. They do a great job of mixing it up.

I meant solely aesthetically. In terms of how they play, they could not be more different. And, yes, Jungle is easily the best in the game.

I can't find a decent source of screencaps (and can't be arsed taking them myself, no offence), but the Bridge Zone has a very interesting, open, almost rural feel to the aesthetic that is entirely seperate from Green Hill.
Yes, I will defend this game to the death, even at the expense of logic if necessary. We're not there yet, though.
Considering doing a big 8-bit Sonic thread.

Am I right in saying, on another note, that 8-bit Sonic 1 is the only 2D Sonic game to not have loop-de-loops? Sonic 2 may or may not, I'm not sure. I just think it's interesting given how the loops were a pretty big thing in the original.
Also, Stu, definitely go ahead with a LP of Sonic 1 and 2 8-bit. Especially Sonic 2, I've never beaten the first boss due to the GG's crap screen resolution.

Sonic 2 has a couple. None in Sonic 1. Sonic Chaos has the mobius strips, too.

I actually really enjoyed most of the Game Gear's Sonic platformers. 1, 2, Choas and Triple Trouble all made for decent playing. Not keen on Blast however. Too short, played clunky, special stages were rubbish, and it looked not much better than one of the various pirates that are knocking about.

A couple of quick entries this time, the first because I forgot it last time: Sonic Eraser A pretty terrible attempt at a block/puzzle game, Sonic Eraser looks ugly, sounds ugly and is a damn sight worse than (vaguely) similar efforts from Tetris, Puyo Pop, Columns and Bejeweled. The only positives are the variety of game modes and watching Sonic attack himself for a couple of times. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Master System/Game Gear The 8-bit version of Sonic heavily polarises fans and I'm afraid I fall on the "hate it" camp. At times unintuitive, other times unplayable for someone like me who hasn't put enough practice into it. Perhaps I'd love it if I tried harder, but I don't particularly want to - fifth impressions etc.. The graphics make a sudden move to the Chaos/Triple Trouble idea of being big and bulky, which is exactly how the game itself feels. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the original that the sequel felt the need to correct, but never mind. There's a reason why green Zones are the usual start point in Sonic games, with Underground seeming right out of place. Minecarts are fun enough, but can't save a largely empty level. Sky Base is horrendous, and no supporters of the hang gliders can convince me otherwise. The first act of Aqua Planet is almost pointless. The whole of Green Hills is pointless. This is rushed, I ran out of time. Will gladly elaborate on either of these poor games but I'd rather move on to better ones. Never actually completed this, Chaos Emerald locations are hard as nails.

1) It's Aqua Lake.
2) Sky Base is in Sonic 1.
3) Green Hills is only pointless if every Sonic level ever is pointless.
4) You're wrong, and you're a grotesquely ugly freak.

1) It's Aqua Lake. 2) Sky Base is in Sonic 1. No excuses for these, I was reading the level list and just chose to ignore it... I only say 'Green Hills' is pointless in the sense that it's 'Green Hill' with an S on the end. Sonic 1 SMS made it more fun by venturing underground, Chaos turned into a "Mecha". There's just no real need for it and it's not that fun to play. opinion over Oh yes, and I'm intensely ugly. But I get by.

Sonic 2 for the Game Gear is alright, but it's really [censored]ing hard. Not hard in the same way Super Meat Boy is hard, it's not masochistic about it, but it is a genuine struggle, and to beat it, you need to know what it's going to do (and be able to second guess where the balls bounce in that first boss). The Master System Version, while the same game, is apparently a lot better, simply for having a bigger screen. and thus giving you more visibility.
As for Sonic Eraser, well I'll be honest, I've never played it. Never really knew anything about it other than it's a really obscure puzzle game for a modem add on for the Mega Drive that only released in Japan (and flopped).
