you don't look at Sonic the Hedgehog and think "Hmm, I bet he has great difficulty getting insurance coverage". Well I will now.

Well let's think about it. Top speeds of 770 mph. Based on Generations, he CANNOT stop on a dime by default(he must get an ability for that). Sonic the Hedgehog, meet Inertia the Law of Physics. So many injuries would surely keep any company from insuring him. Daily hospital visits! Daily I say! So he took up the role of a hero just to pay his enormous medical bills. However, Progressive, the innovators they are, saw the potential of an alliance with him. It shows they care about all customers(as long as they have money), and the visibility of aligning with such a hero will boost their sales. Genius I say.

I only ask as you're the only one who A) has anything positive to say and B) well, just listen to yourself, you sound like an insurance commercial yourself now. Also, legally, I think we're required to now state that "other insurance agencies and search engines are available."

Just have them all shot in front of their families.

Well, I was actually being satirical with regards to them being innovative. There's nothing innovative about plastering a renowned icon on your products. Since over here in the USA insurance companies are apparently oh so great. But I digress as that's off topic. As for the general positive stuff: well, I don't complain when Sonic aligns with macaroni or t-shirts or anything else. Merchandise and marketing are merchandise and marketing. He's seen as commercially useful which to me is a good thing.

Because the character we're all fans of(well not necessarily some StC fans are exclusivists but I digress) is seen as viable?
The more money Sega has, the higher quality goods it can produce... maybe we'll get a good game that isn't 5 hours long thanks to deals such as these!

Ayrton Senna was genuinely made to hold that on what would be his last F1 win. Ye gods.....

Ayrton Senna was genuinely made to hold that on what would be his last F1 win. Ye gods..... Well, given Sonic's association with speed, it only makes sense he'd be the foremost character for racers and vehicles... auto insurance actually makes some sense I suppose. Oh god my eyes why why whyyyy! DX

I just wonder why the Sonic 3 invincibility music was used, yet he still has that stupid-arse running animation from Unleashed. I wondered that as well... or why they hadn't used the Classic Sonic from Generations with that music. That might have made a smidgen of sense! :s The advert itself just makes me think WTF? Insurance?! Really? Does anyone else remember the Barclay's bank adverts from the early '90s? I believe a pixelated Sonic jumping on a sofa with the the old Barclay's logo being used... or did my memory just make that up?!

My cousin just texted me. Mentioned this commercial to me. Had to comment I'm way ahead of her for once. Can only imagine their reaction upon seeing it. "We've got to tell Tanner!" I wondered that as well... or why they hadn't used the Classic Sonic from Generations with that music. That might have made a smidgen of sense! :s Sega: -Invented the Werehog -Made a character with chaos powers make use of guns and cars -Made Sonic fall in love with a human -Decided that instead of a mink they should have another hedgehog Sense and Sega should not be used in the same sentence. Surely he gets into a lot of accidents so it makes sense. Celebrities are known for their exorbiant insurance anyway. Such as those who have their teeth insured for tens of thousands of dollars. Per tooth.

I believe a pixelated Sonic jumping on a sofa with the the old Barclay's logo being used... or did my memory just make that up?! Don't remember. I do remember a 90s ad of random people saying what they'd really like to buy - you can get a Barclays loan, kids! - and a flower-girl in a forest was saying she wanted "a Harley". I didn't know that meant a motorbike at the time, so that ad really confused me.

I think marketing these things to kids is some indirect way to get to the parents. Then again that's how a lot of marketing is, like when you put toys in fast food items. The kids will nag and nag the parents, and the parents will shut up.
I suppose the children would passively mention Sonic and Progressive and that would have a subliminal effect on the parents or something. I doubt Sega and Progressive would do it if they didn't hope to make a penny.
Alternatively, the fact many of Sonic's fans are older now. I think that's why they used classic sound effects - those would trigger a nostalgia sensation in older gamers.
As for the use of his modern design, that's freaking easy - look at how the comics(both) were forced to adapt the modern style. Sega has a big rule - if Sonic's used anywhere official, he must have his modern design.
Then again a lot of his merchandise uses the classic design, though again, that's probably to appeal to the retro crowd.
