Love it? Hate it? Have a particular favorite?
I got Civ 3 Gold Edition when I first moved to Nevada about 7-8 years ago. I've been playing it on and off ever since, especially the Conquests edition.
I confess, I've never much liked Civ 4, and have yet to try Civ 5.
I don't play vanilla C3C, however. I generally play the mods Age of Imperialism, or Rhye's of Civilization. Both are very fast and put interesting spins on the game. Rhye's basically re-designs the game from the ground up, with new units, civs, wonders, and makes turns take mere seconds. Age of Imperialism throws you into 1895 as one of the 31 nations available, from tiny rebel movements to the massive British Empire.
While it doesn't seem strategy gaming is big here, are there any other Civ fans out there?

I'm one of the "newer" generation of Civ fans, coming in right on the latest one, Civ 5. Absolutely loving it for a relaxing title to drop a day into if you just wanna chill out and entertain yourself for a long time.
Has its problems, yes. The player vs player is broken to the point of not actually working (why not turn based combat?!) but getting a few friends and working against a competant AI (and the Civ AI is very very good, particularly with a couple mods) is a lovely experience to just chat to them while having a linking game.

I'm one of the "newer" generation of Civ fans, coming in right on the latest one, Civ 5. Absolutely loving it for a relaxing title to drop a day into if you just wanna chill out and entertain yourself for a long time. Only a day? Good to see that you haven't been entirely sucked in. I know with its long turn times yet constantly replayability, a large percentage of one's life can be eaten up by Civ. In fact, it's gained its own nickname - "One More Turn Syndrome." Your eyes feel heavy, but you can't help but play just one more... and one more after that. And another after that. And another after that... ...they have real-time combat in CiV? That's just wrong. It's Civilization, which has always been turned based, not Command & Conquer. Alas, I never got around to trying multiplayer myself, especially in real-time. I've been meaning to try one where the players alternate turns, but never got around to it. I'll need to try out Civ 5 sometime, however. I'm just afraid since I didn't like IV that V may not appeal to me. Then again, some say Civ 5 has a lot more in common with Civ III. If so, perhaps I can finally get out of the dark ages and actually play a modern title.
