They're doing prequels of Watchmen. Big whoop. The Internet may take a collective [censored]-fit over it - but the Internet is [censored]ing stupid.
I'm not saying DC will do a great job, but if they don't, who cares? In 20-30 years, the original Watchmen series will continue to stand as an iconic series, while everyone will have forgotten about these. Unless they'e excellent, of course. In which case everyone will be all "why did they wait, like, 20 years to do this?!".

Well, yeah, but whatever they write is going to be pointless. Not because "omg watchmen is the greatest thing ever and nothing they can do will ever be as good", but because, no matter how good it is, Watchmen is a self-contained, stand-alone story. It doesn't necessitate any more set-up than it already has. It's not going to keep me up at night, but in my opinion it's just needless flab.

It's just Star Wars all over again, really. I find myself struggling to care about it this time, though. At the very least, DC isn't [censored]ing with the original Watchmen book - so whatever else they do, they're welcome to it. They'll make it, people will buy it and nerds will complain enough to give it free publicity... before buying it themselves anyway.
It's a Win-Win for DC, really. But hey, at least they've got some talent on the books. Even if it's pointless, if it's enjoyable to read, is that not enough for a comic book to acheive?

Soon Alan Moore will attain the red ring...

One of the things I read on Kotatu (It was for the release of the Watchmen game thing), was that the reason there was so much backstory put in Watchmen was so that prequels and sequels could be made.
Admittedly it doesn't feel right without Moore at the helm. Also, even if it turns out to be good, people will hate it.

Companies milking their cash cows? Who'd figure. Well at least it isn't an actual babies story. Baby x is overdone and just scary. *remembers when they did the baby Sonic series in Archie* ...yeaaaah, still of the opinion there. Overall, needless, but so is a lot of prequel and sequel nonsense. Just the market working its magic - you've got a property so many as well squeeze as much as you can out of it.

Companies milking their cash cows? Who'd figure. Except that Watchmen was never a cash cow. It took nearly 20 years for anything besides the original comic to come out, and it is regarded as pretty much holy in the eyes of a lot of comic book fans. I didn't think it'd be done because Watchmen is revered by a lot of critics and fans alike as one of the greatest works in comics history. While it's not a big deal to me as I've never exactly been enamoured with Watchmen, it just kinda annoys me that this kind of thing simply can't be left alone, especially without Moore's consent or involvement. I would be pretty ticked off if I wrote a complete story like that and then suddenly a group of complete strangers were brought in to add bells and whistles*. I just thought it was an interesting bit of news to share, and something I wasn't keen on the idea of. :T * The hypothetical (and untrue) scenario, of course, being that I was anywhere near good enough to attract this kind of attention.

Moore did the work on a contract. He (should have) known what he was agreeing to when he did so. If he wanted complete control, he should have done what plenty of others were doing in the 80s and 90s and gone indie. He worked with DC, and as a result, DC owns the franchise. He's responsible for his own choices and actions, and I don't really think he needs the Internet defending him. This isn't exactly off the mark either.

I know that Moore was under contract, and that's why I'm not saying "DC can't do this". They have every right to. And yes, I do think that he's quite stuck-up and a bit of a hypocrite, but at the same time I'm not against re-using characters. The thing is that very few works that re-use characters are under the pretense of being in the same continuity as the original work: Bride of Frankenstein, for example, is a sequel to the Frankenstein movie rather than the book: the Alice thing I've never seen as being a direct continuation of Carroll's works. Basically my issue isn't with the quality of the work (as I'll not bother picking these up most likely), or some kind of misplaced Alan Moore loyalty, but artistic integrity. Yes, I know, here huge corporations will do as huge corporations do and try to make more money off of successful items, and it's well within their right to, but I dunno, I guess I just like it when a complete story is a complete story.

This isn't exactly off the mark either.'Should have', perhaps, but he clearly didn't know what he was agreeing to. He and Dave Gibbons gave up a portion of their pay to get a clause in their contract so that they would get the rights to the series and the characters as soon as it went out of print for a year. Problem being that DC will never let the comic go out of print. Otherwise, yeah.

I didn't think it'd be done because Watchmen is revered by a lot of critics and fans alike as one of the greatest works in comics history. Maybe not a cash cow per se, but it doesn't change the fact companies, upon having an idea that sells well enough, will keep spamming it until the cash base dries up. Many a horror movie franchise, for instance, began with a nice idea(Saw, Final Destination), but they soon degenerated into little more than excessive gore, and lo and behold, they're pretty much done for. It's the one problem with a lot of creative works - the creator doesn't know when to quit. Of course, in this case, it's not the creator's choice, but the point stands that if there's money in it, no one's going to bury something in a coffin.

What I am pretty sure of is that Watchmen was meant to be a different DC Universe thing.

Don't care. Alan Moore has [censored]ed with other people's established characters/universes before. Glad it's annoying people with no sense of perspective, and him, the singularly mediocre [censored].

Further proof that DC are creatively bankrupt and cannot think of anything of value or worth anymore. I think that can be said of a lot of old companies. Creative destruction at work, I'd say - the old become bad at once they were once good at, so someone new comes in and re-invigorates things.

Glad it's annoying people with no sense of perspective, and him, the singularly mediocre [censored]. He's a very strange man, that has to be said. I mean, I actually read Neonomicon thinking "A modern-day Cthulhu Mythos investigation series? Sign me up!" After reading the book I think it did more mental damage than any real-life Necronomicon ever could. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the main reason DC are doing this is because they want to keep Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons as far away from the rights as possible. I wouldn't put it past them.

Darwyn Cooke is drawing a six-issue Minutemen miniseries. Darwyn Cooke could do whatever the illustration equivalent of reciting the phone book is and I'd be tempted to get it.

I'm just saying the same thing as Shay - I have no feelings of absolute loyalty to Moore, I just find it a very odd move, creatively speaking. Why make prequels and sequels to something which is self contained? Obviously money, but what the hey.... Anyways, sorry for the comment, I was joking... :s

I don't think they have any problems with Gibbons. He did work for the movie merch if I remember right and he helped with a behind the scenes book.
