I left before the concert happened, plus I'm not too hip on Crush 40... aheh. :'D
Though if it was held in Brighton again, I'd definitely go in a heartbeat. c':

I was referring to a full colour, inked and polished picture, but yeah, it'd depend on the quality of the piece and I really don't like seeing dumb complaints by teens over the cost of a commission, even if it is on Deviantart. Yeah so was I, and I don't think the complaints are dumb. £30 is like, infinite money to me. Don't even worry about it. There's not going to be a row, just a civil, interesting discussion. Unless Adamis posts in which case [censored] it, it's going to hell. --- taking the average basic wage per hour in their area ...Really? Like it's some 9-5 job? That's crazy. You mention profit later - every single time you put pen to paper in commission you are making a profit, because drawing a picture requires absolutely minimal resources, surely? It's possible I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Apparently it's the standard, though. Seems ludicrous to me, but you does what you does. See, I get that. I get the whole "for reproduction" commercial thing should cost more. A drawing for personal use is, like, well, it's not much. It's a sheet of paper with (assumedly!) existing tools used to draw on it, and postage. Sorry if I seem like a dick, but good. I hate seeing art bought and sold. I know this probably seems insane and insulting - I don't object to you or anyone here (Calisto etc) selling commissions or whatever - it's entirely a personal thing. I absolutely treasure every piece of art I draw or am given, regardless of its quality. I don't like to pay for art outside of book collections, I wouldn't want to pay for a commission that was just a drawing I'd told someone to do - it's like art prostitution, and it doesn't sit right from my end. It's too spectacular a talent to shill for. Edit: Talking to Cal makes it clear there's a lot to this I don't understand as an outsider. I think I'll leave the post as it is now because it accurately reflects my confusion regarding this whole thing, but please don't think when reading it that it's an outright stubborn dismissal, and that I'm not interested in being educated on it. There are just some ideas here that conflict with my personal "inner artist".

:c Thank you, dear. Though art usually relies on patronage to get going, and work done for free NEVER gets appreciation. But that's my quick two cents on the matter. Sorry for throwing this off topic. ;;;

Stu, I've seen your work. You could make a mint there.

Stu, I've seen your work. You could make a mint there. If I could get paid to bosh out barely-drawn MS Paint comics I would sacrifice my principles in a heartbeat and buy a Jeep.

My two cents on the whole art selling thing. If an artist wants to make a living they are going to have to sell things in some way. This is not an insult to anyone who thinks otherwise and I loved doing free sketches for people (I wouldn't charge for something like that) but I also like selling things.
In terms of online commissions I've seen some people charge over £100 for coloured comic board type drawings; they're generally pro but it's still uncommon. Colour commissions I generally see go for £15 to £30 but it also depends on backgrounds and how many characters etc.
I do want to open up commissions in the short future so I kinda like getting an idea on how to price myself.

Again I must stress I am ignorant on this subject and my input is ill-informed. I do not mean to insult anyone.

Just to clarify Stu's edit, I was kind of informing him about freelancers, professionals and amateur artists, both of which can charge very different rates. And how they all get undermined by the ones underselling themselves on DA, like the 1 dollar commissions, and don't even get me started about point commissions.
That's just a small part, I won't get into details. =P
Back on topic though, SoS. Lesson learnt, do not go on a train for a 3 hour journey in the morning...and the same again in the evening... I think I was on my feet for about...11 hours in total, with maybe 20 minutes of sit down time altogether...I'm still tired now.
Spent most of the day helping out at the comic area, directing people and unintentionally become a proper staff member accidentally. Was fun talking to various people in the queue I helped to manage though, some very good young artists there who were very, very inspired by the Nigels.
Highlight of the day: Meeting the guy who bought my Captured Flicky t-shirt design and wore on stage for Never Mind The Buzzbombers. ^^

I spent 9 hours on a coach (not including 4 hours on a ferry) from Dublin to London overnight. OTL And did the same time on the way home. ; n; ... SoS needs more seating. That is all.

That's insane, you need a hotel next time. Probably would have enjoyed the day more if my original plan had happened; holiday weekend. Oh well, got some great drawings out of it, and drew a bit. Always good.

That staff guy you replaced took quite a while if I recall.

I never charged a fan for a drawing in my life. Just saying. Sorry, I never meant to insinuate that you did. What I meant was that professional artists tend to have much higher rates than commissions on DeviantART. Not that they're undeserving of that. I never thought you did.

I can't imagine doing commissions. I mean, I am not a great artist by any means, so it's a total fantasy scenario, but I don't think I could do it. Sell books and stuff, yeah, but commissions? I don't get it. I buy commissions from people purely on price and principle. I've done them before for a brief spell to help with family income, but that's not helpful when your motivation is non-existent. But I'd sooner help someone trying to pay bills by buying an inexpensive commission than someone who is doing them because they want to indulge themselves.

Just in case my words have come over wrong just let me say I have nothing against anyone selling their artwork and people can charge what they like. It's just in the situation I'm in I'd feel awkward charging for doing somebody a sketch.

Why Brighton? that may as well be on the moon, you'd think they'd host it somewhere in the Midlands? bit more central and all that.

(it was meant to be held in the Hove Centre, but got moved because of an electrical fire two nights before the con) Plus I think Brighton's probably easier to find, especially with all the non-UK visitors (including myself) heading to London first then just getting a train/coach out to the town. Or maybe that's just me. :I

For folks getting a train or plane, London is the easiest place to get to. The problem with this year was that London would have been packed for the Olympics.

I managed to completely avoid any weird fans and everyone I met was alright, and that makes me very happy. And then I joined the Nigels queue too late to get a sketch, which is not happy at all but I did get to chat with Nigel D about his 2000 AD work, Digmon, and Ponies ("G3", guys, sorry). And there was a small sprog getting his picture taken with "Sonic" and that was dawww. Lol, I remember last year whilst queuing I looked around and there was a skinny tall guy in the most perverted looking Tails cosplay I'd ever seen. He came ambling down the street dragging these inflatable tails behind him like Pyramid Head, it was terrifying. I, too, remember this.
