Hooray Parappa the Rapper!
Edit: Yeah alright I'm trying not to make Smash Bros. comparisons but for goodness' sake. The guy calls God Of War 3 the nicest-looking game ever which is pish. I mean, it's a damn fine-looking game, but nicest ever is a stretch.

so at the risk of sounding as ignorant as I actually am, this looks like a pretty shameless carbon-copy of smash bros. right?

It pretty much is unashamedly that. That's not as big a deal as the reality that the characters in this game are not as big a draw as the characters in Smash Bros, though. I mean, Mario vs 'That guy from Buzz' is hardly going come out in the Buzz guy's favour.
Still, I'm sure people will buy it and enjoy it regardless. Sticking to SSB's gameplay formula to the letter may seem like a cheap knockoff - but it would at least make for good gameplay...

SSB would be a pretty tough act to follow especially with the audacious similarity, but since it's on another system entirely I don't suppose it matters as much. Some laughably thin justification for it though. It's obvious it was heavily inspired by Smash Bros. and that's not a bad thing in itself, but the reasons they gave for taking that path are quite flimsy.

Sticking to SSB's gameplay formula to the letter may seem like a cheap knockoff - but it would at least make for good gameplay... I was making that point to my friend Blitzen on Facebook who made me aware of the game. Call it a rip-off, but it's a tried-and-true formula that is easy to play and is genuinely entertaining. It just works. But it's also true that pretty much none of the characters shown so far have the same degree of identification and popularity as those that appear in Smash Bros. I mean, if it were made by a single well-known developer like Capcom or Sega who have a large selection of well-known characters from popular and FUN titles, I might still think it's a rip-off but I'd give more of a [censored] than I currently do with this game.

Problem is Sony don't really have all that many characters for it. All the big name characters weren't made by Sony, or were under license to them from other companies. Which is probably why they're really scraping the barrel by advertising Parapa the Rapper at the front. I could understand Parapa being a bonus unlockable character, kinda like Mr Game & Watch in Smash Bro's, but as a front runner in trailers?
I mean there are some obvious choices for Sony here. Sackboy, Kratos, The guy from uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, and Jak & Daxter are all good candidates. But they really can't go as far as they could considering how many big names they had aren't exclusives. Lara Croft, Solid Snake, heck even Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, names that made the psone era, never really belonged to Sony, and hence will probably miss out here. I really cannot name any other Sony characters, much less ones that belong in a game like this.

The guy calls God Of War 3 the nicest-looking game ever which is pish. I mean, it's a damn fine-looking game, but nicest ever is a stretch. "Perhaps the best looking game on the planet" is the exact wording, and it's not really unreasonable as an opinion. Certainly the nicest-looking game on the PS3. Game looks fun. Edit: Third party characters have been confirmed as present. As far as first-party goes, I'll laugh if they put Gabe Logan from Syphon Filter in. Also, they own Lemmings, so they should have a basher Lemming in it. Admit this is genius.

As someone who thinks Smash Bros is a giant pile of arse, but would totally buy a Sega version of it, This looks bad.
I do like how the guy says "if it wasn't for this game we wouldn't be here."
And nothing of value was gained.
Looking forward to the awkward trailer where they show off Sonic, Lara Croft, Ezio and Snake.

This just looks embarrassing. Not just the fact that it's an utterly shameless knock-off, but the fact that, as has been pointed out, Sony really don't have enough truly iconic characters to pull it off. Sure, Nintendo also had to plough through the archives (what with the likes of the Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch), but many of the most memorable characters on Sony consoles aren't Sony exclusives, and even the few that Sony does have aren't exactly what you'd call household names when you compare them to characters from Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, etc.
Honestly, it may turn out to be a solid game - who knows at this point - but the justifications for its mere existence are damn laughable, and I can't see how it can possibly work without them working out a ton of licensing deals to pad out the roster with third-party characters, which would end up diluting a large part of the appeal of a game like this.

I've noticed characters often are as much a selling point as the actual gameplay. Lord knows it works for Sega.
So, it's taking Smash Bros.' successful formula, but hey, why is it a bad idea to take what works? I never really understood critiques of stolen gameplay mechanics. As for something like say, story, it's different.
Seeing Hades take on cartoony enemies is pretty fun at least. And I don't even know most of the franchises mentioned.
I'd buy it if I have a PS3, but I do not. Maybe it's time to invest. I'll need to get myself some games for it though to make my parents shell out the money, though. Lessee. Sly Cooper and this would be a good start.
Me personally I'd probably get it just for Ratchet or Jak. Likely the latter since I've never really played the former. :S
Wait. Full stop. Can we possibly get Crash Bandicoot in this? Awww yeah.
To not have him at least as an unlockable would just be shameful and disrespectful of Sony's roots.
I assume Sony will be asking other companies to use their characters, considering Sony, to my knowledge, has never been as big a gaming company as Nintendo is, so much as a developer of tons of types of hardware with video games being part of the package.
I assume they will try to limit it to PS exclusives, so I'm thinking Jak, Ratchet, Solid Snake, etc.
As much as it would make me squee to see Sonic and Ratchet duke it out.

I never really understood critiques of stolen gameplay mechanics. Some mechanics are so old or established it's not really stealing. Then you have poor designers who blindly steal mechanics from a recent good game in isolation, so it rightly doesn't work. Then you have inspired designers who do a better job of properly integrating such mechanics into the framework of their game. Then you have the sort of shovelware-y wholesale ripping-off demonstrated here.

So we've got Parappa, Kratos, Fat Princess, Thingy From Twisted Metal I Think Possibly, Whatshisface, Mateyboy, Hoojamaflip, Noidea, Waitit'scomingtome...
I like the way he says "we've captured the essence of her love of cake" with a straight face. Top marks there.
Anyway, yeah. Looks like it could be fun but it's hardly making me want to run out and buy a PS3. Get some characters that people actually know, first. Stu's Basher Lemming idea is clearly genius.

Did you fall asleep for a decade in 1994?
On a game that has not been played, ladies and gentlemen.
Anyway, yeah, still looks fun as [censored]. Another temptation for me to bite the bullet and get a PS3. Loads of potential for characters, too. Excited.

On a game that has not been played, ladies and gentlemen. It's a not entirely unreasonable guess, though the dismissive hyperbolic colouring owes to my in-fact total indifference to it. So yes.

The only Sony-exclusive character I can think of who hasn't been touched upon would be someone from Ape Escape. Spike or Specter perhaps.

I'd be swayed by the inclusion of some big names attributed to the success of the PlayStation, even if they weren't exclusive. Spryo, Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, Claude from GTA 3, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, to name the ones that spring to my mind. It'd be hell to license, though, and I guess that's the game's biggest weak point in comparison to SSB. So much of what made the PlayStation a success was down to the third parties - but just how much of that can possibly be represented without costing a fortune?

On a game that has not been played, ladies and gentlemen. Shovelware-y I disagree with but the rest is entirely accurate. This is identical to SSB but with less recognisable characters. I mean, I don't even know who Fat Princess is or where she's from. She likes cake? No [censored]? PaRappa the Rapper isn't exactly mainstream either: he's had two games, a remake, and an even more obscure spin-off. He's not exactly the face I'd be using to sell my game. SSB has a great formula and I don't mind it being ripped off (although it's adorable that he's trying to pass it off like this was the result of reasoned decision-making). Nintendo don't own the four-way meta brawl, and besides - I can guarantee that a huge part of this game will be superior to Smash Bros. in that Sony actually has working online. But you can't claim that this isn't an obvious SSB rip, because it is.

It's a multiplayer fighting game. The one hook to SSB is that you win by knocking your opponent off-screen. This game has energy bars. Multiplayer fighting games exist besides SSB. Edit: Just for the record, too, it's all well and good to say "I've never heard of these characters, cuh", but before I played Melee/Brawl I'd never heard of Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Ice Climbers, Ike, Lucario, Lucas, Marth, Ness, Roy, Sheik or Wolf. Playstation fans - who this is for - will have heard of Fat Princess and Radec. Edit 2: Character wishlist: - Specter from Ape Escape - Some Oddworld character, possibly a Slig or Stranger - Sir Daniel from MediEvil - Nariko from Heavenly Sword - Drake from Uncharted - Jak and Daxter, obviously. There's a Sandover stage so they're pretty much a sure thing. - Ditto Ratchet and Clank. I'd like Quark, too. - A Prinny. Edit 3: it's adorable that he's trying to pass it off like this was the result of reasoned decision-making Where?

I'm not going to continue repeating the same points. Partly because I'm looking up Onimusha Blade Warrior, partly because I don't know how else to put it. Mechanically and thematically, it looks exactly the same!
But they weren't used to front the game. They were bonus characters - none of these characters presented here are universally-recognisable except for Kratos, and they're in the first trailer, where the cornerstones and mainstays should go. Also, Ganondorf and Lucario are quite widely-known. Lucario had had his own movie by the time Brawl was out, and it's pretty hard to have owned a Nintendo console and not heard of Ganon.
I do like the fact that the stages incorporate stuff from more than one game though. That's a fun touch.

Adding to character suggestions: Conurring with all Stu's choices (the ones I've heard of, at least). Would actually very much like to see an Oddworld character appearing in this, would be a disappointing missed opportunity if they didn't I feel.
Gex. Quite surprised no-ones mentioned him yet, really. Captain Lamat from ODT. Gitaroo Man. Monkey Hero. Dr. Don from Point Blank. The little Devil guy from Devil Dice. Erm........ Olivier Panis.
Trying to remember what games I'd played on PS1 in the past is tricky, but even so I think I'm rapidly scraping the barrel. Should be a number of workable characters, though, despite poor recognisability.
I also just remembered Croc, quite surprisingly. Thing is, experience tells me if I'm for Croc appearing in this game Stu will moan about how crap he is, though if I'm to go against it then he'll be singing his praises. So I'm keeping schtum and entirely neutral on the matter this time. Ha ha!

Gex. Quite surprised no-ones mentioned him yet, really. Why would you be surprised that nobody mentioned [censored]ing Gex? On a related note, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Cheesy. Or Firo and Klawd. Or [censored]ing Johnny Bazookatone. [censored]ing hell. Where's Jinx while we're at it? Gex was multi-format. He was on Saturn first. 3DO first iirc. Touted as a big thing for the system back in the day. I'm not going to continue repeating the same points. Partly because I'm looking up Onimusha Blade Warrior, partly because I don't know how else to put it. Mechanically and thematically, it looks exactly the same! Yes, it looks like a 4-player fighting game. What else would it look like? A submarine sim?
