Ok so Having a little argument on Facebook on a sonic group where this guy is claiming sonic and his world was based on dragon ball Z. Right from sonic 1. And he's claiming his opinion as fact (as per usual with the sonic fan base)
To which I retorted"Sonic is similar to Dragon Ball Z I would say it was influenced by it more as the series progressed, but the sonic series was never form the start based on DBZ." I even put up links showing how the concept for sonic in the begging was meant to be about him saving his girl friend Madonna and how there was only six chaos emerald in the begging and super sonic was not necessary for sonic 2 it was just an added feature." To which he blanked all my points and went balh blah blah your wrong how can you say that it was always the intention for the sonic ages to be based on DBZ.
So I was wondering, Am I right on this pint? Of course it would be ignorant o say theres no influences from DBZ in sonic but sonic was no way inter to be based on DBZ originally.
Thoughts?

The seventh Chaos Emerald and Super Sonic are homages to Dragonball Z, but really anything else is coincidental. I'm sure I read somewhere they wanted to reference Dragonball for a reference Japan would get, and Star Wars (Death Star = Death Egg) for a reference America would get. There might be more stuff in the later games that may have been inspired, but certainly I very much doubt that around the time when the series started they were thinking "lets run parallel to DBZ" and certainly not "We'll still be doing this series in twenty years, and should make sure our ages of Sonic match up with DBZ's".

Sonic is based on Bill Clinton, Michael jackson and Santa clause fact! Or at least his personality is based of Bill Clinton Michael jackson grace the idea for sonic's sneaker which were coloured for Santa. In terms of what it was based on, it was just designed to be a fast Mario beater, the story as you mentioned involved sonic's girl friend madona and his band Then the whole thing got americanized... and so dragon ball z was probably no on there mind, as they wanted sonic to look softer and more american, more a mickey mouse. Like am said the dragon ball z element of super sonic was added for sonic 2, and it was one reference for japan, and the death egg was a star wars reference. there load of info on this, not least the game trap retrospective and the sega 20th documentary

Thank You I was saying those points over and over again in an essay long thread and its like talking to a brick wall. Its Constantly "Oh no sonics design is based ono DBZ and even sonic 1 was based around Robotnik creating a badnik army much akin to the androids using human parts. and knuckles is like Pickolo blah blah blah" Its doing my head in repeating the same points so for my sanitised sake I just wanted to see if I was intact right in pointing out his flaws. And no he's not trolling he's being deadly serious Ive had arguments with this guy over dumb rubbish about 06. He wrote an essay as to how mephalise or whats his face from 06 was going to be the main villain in sonic generations FHL! Im just sick of this idiot stating his opinion as fact and rudely bullying any one who disagrees and pulling facts from no where pulled of his butt.

I think it's a well known fact in Sonic fandom that there are references to DBZ... at least in the 2D games.
No idea about the new fangled ones. Seeing Sonic in Goku's gi would be pretty funny...

Here's another reference from Sonic Colours.
You know how when you use a Wisp it announces what it is? In the Japanese version, they got Fumihiko Tachiki, who voiced the Gaia Memories (which announce their name in a similar way to the Wisps) from Kamen Rider W to voice that.
Quality's not great.

Aha! Well... it's obvious DBZ also borrows heavily from this, so it's a reference within a reference... Monkeyception!

When Yuji Naka was working on Sonic 2 in America, he had tapes of DBZ flown out to him. I do believe he has said that Super Sonic, 7th Chaos Emerald, The Sonic 3K special stages are based on/homages to DBZ.

Get Blue Spheres is a homage to DBZ? Hmm... have to say I don't get that one... do the horrible colours that some of the "planets" are resemble Planet Namek or something?
Ugh. My English... what the hell?

I assumed Sonic was influenced by whatever was cool at the time, in contrast to Mario, who everybody thought was boring.
So, what was cool in 1991? The Simpsons, Michael Jackson, The Terminator 2: Judgment Day and probably some bottom-feeding hair metal band.

So yeah Its influenced by nit based on. The guy was a complete moron going on saying that I had n right to compare Mario or Sonic together. Due to the fact they are coded differently , hence that makes them two complete different games. Even if you watch the sonic documentaries on you tribe there is no mention of dragon ball in it and do compare sonic to Mario . Like I said later on I guess it was influenced but not the base of sonic. But he went on to discuss hoe every character is a reflection of the characters in Dragon ball.

Sonic being called "furry DBZ" is a blatant troll move. So Sonic goes super to beat the villain. Big deal. The transformation is swift and he often needs someone else to assist him in taking out the baddie. And recently they even had a non-Super final boss!
It's not really a ripoff so much as there are these things called archtypes. You have your hero(Sonic/Goku), your crazy love interest(Chi Chi/Amy), your best friend(Tails/Krillin), your rival turned friend(Knuckles/Piccolo), your antihero(Vegeta/Shadow), and so on.
Here's a curveball for those who allege DBZ ripoffery. Who is Eggman's counterpart? Ohhhh, he doesn't have one, because DBZ doesn't have a single villain. I believe we just found a major chip in that whole counterpart theory didn't we?
If Sonic was DBZ, Sonic would have vaporised Eggman ages ago. But no, the fat man keeps his head down and comes back with another idiotic scheme every few years. If Sonic was DBZ, they would have all had kids and the series would now focus on the next generation. They also would have a new villain who manages to brush them aside like flies at game start but is defeated easily by the end. When often, the true villain isn't revealed until the very end.
It's overall, just a buzzphrase to irritate people and anyone who theorises such should be placed on ignore swifter than Sonic can say "gotta juice!"

Ok I 100 percent agree with you there, the guy ended up locking me which is no big deal second time he's blocked me. I thought he grew up by now. Just annoying when part of the sonic fans base create an unfounded opinion and call it fat while ignoring the facts that prove they are wrong. I repeated my self live ten times and he was like omg your such a noob.

More interested in the fact that Dr. Eggman sounds exactly like Dr. Weil. *strokes chin* Edit: Same guy. Rad.

Super Sonic's an obvious reference to DBZ, just as the Death Egg is an obvious reference to Star Wars. To say Sonic is based on Star Wars would be silly, just as it would be silly to say it's based on Dragonball Z.
HOWEVER. The guy you're arguing with doesn't believe it is either, and you're being trolled. He's winning. He's winning hard and he is an excellent troll.
Incidentally, I can't think of a single piece of Japanese fiction in which beating a villain doesn't involve the hero(es) transforming in some way.
See: Power Rangers, Japanese TMNT, Tsunami 2011.

Is this still a thing? Because I just found something weird, probably just a coincidence. Second episode of Liveman, brought to you by MSpaint. Aired March 1988. Word is meant to be world, there, take it up with the subbers.
