Because WHATEVERITS2009.
1. Sega Master System - Bubble Bobble
This is a game even my mum plays and thinks is brilliant. The simple and beautiful premise of Bubble Bobble is that two humans (Bubby and Bobby) have been turned into dragons (and had name changes; now Bub and Bob) for lolz or something, and your respective girlfriends have been kidnapped by monsters. You blow bubbles to capture your enemies and "pop" them though 200 levels OF PLATFORMING EXCELLENCE to save your ladies and thwart the various bosses within the game. Unlike most versions, the SMS port has several hidden items placed within the game which must be found to successfully finish the game.
This is a game which is older than I am, which I've owned perhaps 90% of my life, but manages to retain such a wonderful level of variation every time I play it. With the exception of the first 5 or so levels, items always change, meaning you adopt different strategies to complete a level. You may find a deadly item to kill all enemies, or you may find a point-boosting item. Its a game that on the surface is so simple, yet has subtle techniques such as bubble bouncing and biting which soon become vital to master.
Much like Lemmings this game has a lot of ports, most of which appear very unique, though in my personal preference I find the Master System version to be superior as it appears truest to the original arcade version. Nevertheless, here's an interesting comparison video.
Also great because the dragons are so goddamned cute. ^__^
Addendum: Another reason this is a great game, is because even today I'm finding new things, new secrets, new codes. It's the game that just keeps giving.
