I still like it! I wouldn't use it all the time, but since it has been 19 years...
But yes, to those that thought I coloured the plane in wrong by not having it yellow and purple, I was clearly paying homage to the older issues.
Right?
...yeah. <_<

I just have a dumbassed question; I've been playing the hell out of SA2 and I just wondered if Big's scene with Bark's truck is a reference to Big's cameo in City Escape? :B Yknow, running away from the GUN truck with his arms flailing around?

Right then:
Sonic’s strip has great art and some fab visual effects- the static on the monitor at the bottom of page one is a very cool touch. Sonic’s dialogue is great character stuff- him commenting how often Robotnik’s put him in an inescapable trap is just self-aware enough from Shay to prevent anyone levelling cries of unoriginality at the “trap” scenario (though they’d be idiots to do so, it’s classic superhero storytelling) but not self-aware enough to be cheesey.
Sonic’s dialogue on page two where he says only an idiot would fall for the dummy is absolutely fantastic writing. Classic STC Sonic. “Tornado” is game/anime Sonic, sure, but who cares? It’s a better name than “The Bi-Plane” isn’t it?
Always lovely to see classic Badniks show up. The big uppercut in panel two of page three look cool, that panel’s top. Sonic’s head is falling off his shoulders a little in the next panel, but that’s a small concern when the art is, overall, of such a high quality.
The return of the Star Post as a plot device is very interesting. It’s a shame the story writes them out at its conclusion (or does it?- gasp!!). I do like the lifes/lives line. It almost seems like a nod to the fact some smart arse (usually me or Stu) spots a bunch of spelling/grammar errors in each new issue and goes on about it (though we are 100000% correct and right to do so forever).
The method of getting rid of the Wing Fortress was very clever, I’d have never seen it coming. The only small gripe is that Sonic doesn’t make it clear how he escaped but, then, super speed and all that, he could have run back from Robotnik’s base.
Great opening story, very reminiscent of some of the classic STC Sonic tales. Pete’s strength still lies in his colouring work, but his character art is massively improving as time goes on. Sonic’s a little bit more legs than anything else in some panels but, then, that’s just my personal preference speaking as the same’s true of Sega’s Sonic these days. Excellent work.
NAKKURUS-UU’s story, then. Once again, lovely art. It’s nice to see the classic Zones return, Marble Garden in particular as it’s such an important STC location (the first place Sonic and Tails visited on the Floating Island). The first page is an excellent opening- it’s well framed, it’s to the point and it gives us all the exposition we need to understand where we stand. Shay, you really have to be congratulated for avoiding the trap of writing sixty words where nine would suffice. The action in the panels tell us all we need to know throughout this story with the words being used only for what Knuckles is thinking- smart.
The warnings are a great plot device. One does wonder (in light of this part’s conclusion) how the person who left them was able to write them while no doubt fleeing for their lives. All in due course, I’m sure.
I love Porker’s vehicle thing, would be interesting to see if he made it himself or if it was adapted from echidna technology. There’s a lot of mileage in exploring the ancient echidnae and their technology- seems to me this story’s led somewhat in that direction, too.
And what a cliffhanger! A character from the games introduced- is he friend or foe? And that image on the wall in the background- foreshadowing of a climactic future issue in the same way Hidden Palace Zone foreshadowed Doomsday in S&K? Very exciting stuff, an excellent part 1.
And, lastly, Big the Cat. I never liked Big before but my hat’s off because this is great and brings to mind some of the classic STC gag strips.
The Family’s back! You guys do listen to us! OK, I’m bored with the Family now, get rid. OK, I kid, I kid. But it’s nice to see they aren’t a forgotten thread. And maybe now they apparently serve a purpose (protection racket against the Badniks) they might have an interesting direction.
Adamis’ art has really come on tons, and that might seem like an odd thing to say, but compare his work now to how it was, say, ten issues ago and there’s a definite improvement. Can only be a good thing! Big, in particular, is drawn very well.
Ray cameo! I missed that on the first reading. Very cool stuff. The cockroach running the pizza shop is a funny touch. And a Bark cameo on the next page too haha.
Big realising he can’t drive after doing so is wonderful- it’s a gag that works on the same level as Wile E. Coyote not falling off a cliff until he looks down. Top of page four- looks like a pre-blue Sonic cameo. Intentional?
And loads of lovely Badniks fighting and a nice joke to wrap up the story. Great stuff.
I’m thrilled with this issue. Not only is it the best issue STC-O has done in a long, long time, it also speaks highly to Stiv as an editor and Shay as a creator. Not only is this a strong issue, but it also shows concrete proof that you listen to your readers. More than that, it shows Stiv’s tremendous faith in Shay. If this is the quality of the work he can deliver, then that faith is extremely well-placed. From comments Shay put on Facebook, it seems Stiv was very hands on in his help and guidance throughout- that really shows in the end result in a way it hasn’t come across so clearly in previous issues. Stiv and Shay evidently make a good team of idea commissioner and writer, respectively. For all the “epic” stories STC-O has done over the years, this is probably the closest it’s come in a long time to properly emulating the original comic.
And now I’m done noshing off Stiv and Shay, you may continue with your daily business.

I just realised - if Big doesn't know how to drive a motorbike, does that mean it's not his bike and he pinched it from someone?!

incredable I had so much up my sleaves I so totally forgot about STCO that I read the new issue, only just now. But onestly....I really didn't appreciate it. Like the last stories that have come out, it's like these stories just can't catch you in them. To me it feels like "ok read....uhm....aha..yeah....next please" It doesn't even feel like you want to focus on them. most of all Sonic's story. Sorry Shay, sorry Pete and everyone else, but I didn't like that story. It was flat, really, it felt like that, and Sonic feels slightly out of character.
On the other hand I quite liked Big's story. It was humorous and well tasted. Short but well paced and it gives an insight of what happened to the family. Good work Adamis, you art is fresh as always.
Knuckles, meh.....not sure, nothing special for now. But interesting to see the Gidzoid. Wonder if this can develope nicely. However, too short and little feeling. I don't know what you guys think, but something has to change, these latest issues have been too flat. At least in my view.
Also, I must say it. I actually do feel a bit sour that my halloween strip was cancelled.

I promise you me and pete put all the time we could spare into it`

Some strips often get delayed. It happens. Just don't be sour about it. Matt and Pete are making an amazing job colouring your pages and we're very grateful. My first strips ("Journey to the crossroads") got delayed at th time, I think they've been released almost one year after they've been completed.

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it much, Elyon. I can see what you're saying about Sky Chase: it's quite preoccupied with being simple and that doesn't leave much room for substance. If I were to write it today (I think this was written in late 2010?) it'd probably be very different; it'd probably still prioritise fun, but it'd hopefully be less overbearing in doing so. ...Hopefully there'd be less similarities with Issue #6 as well. Yeah, getting your stuff delayed really sucks. It wasn't a fault on Matt and Pete's part at all - there really wasn't an awful lot of time between it being presented and Hallowe'en. I probably should have forewarned everyone about it. Sorry about that. By the way spoilers there's a Hallowe'en story drawn by Elyon so look forward to that!

I think that's a major problem with "season specific" stories like Halloween specials... they need to be ready for a specific time and if any issues or pitfalls occur, it has to be delayed by at least a year. It's a shame to hear that's happened, Elyon but I wouldn't worry about it. If you ask me, Pete and Kimbo's work is looking really great and they'll only get better and better, it's best to take time over it rather than rush it. Looking forward to it next year!

It's just a bit sad for me. I don't absolutely blame anyone. If it sounded like that then I'm sorry, because that's not what I ment. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it much, Elyon. So much of our personal style can change in 3 years, I'm pretty sure that by the time my strip comes out I'll already be embarrassed of it. As a matter of fact I was a bit surprised when I red it was yours.

The advantage is that if it is delayed, we have one extra strip for that next year! SILVER LINING

Another problem with seasonal strips is how often they come around. In the past, it was fine having a Halloween one every year because it was 26/27 issues since the last one. Now, it's just been 3 issues since Spooks & Mirrors and it feels a little odd to have them so often. Then again, it's not like that often happens and everyone likes a fun themed story, so whatever. PS, I'm still waiting for the Meta Junglira Zone to appear after a couple of you 'squabbled' over who could write it.
