From my last post about Carl Flint (which I have edited because for [censored]'s sake, I don't like the art but that was far more venomous than it had any right to be. Apologies for that):
The faces don't sit right with me either. In all of his appearances Sonic looks like an inflatable toy. Again, looking at his other work, he's not just good, he's great. His Sonic stuff has never sat right with me though.

Is Flint the one that did Badnik's Bridge? I remember, while not finding it as bad as McMahon's, I found the art in that not great. Nope. Casanovas. And I really liked his stuff, not as much as Elson's... but I liked how he made the characters seem "tall" like their modern counterparts but not stretchy. I thought his Tails strips were great. Eeeeh, I'm not a fan of Carl Flint either. I mean, some of his covers were great but the strips... Robotnik with stylish eyelashes? Happy-whilst-getting-his-brain-scanned Johnny? Tantrum the Mouse?! Ugh.

Badniks Bridge was Casanovas'. I liked Casanovas but he was very obviously better at drawing monsters and robots than Sonic characters.

McMahon >>>>< Flint.
Flint's art always made me uncomfortable to look at - there's no construction or appeal in any of his Sonic works, and if his only contribution to an StC issue was just the cover art (of which there are also bad ones too) I was so GLAD. ;;;
McMahon at least can *try* and cater to StC's style and still have excellent drafting skills. I still don't understand the hate for his work. :\

As a kid I hated McMahon's art but probably because I'd been so spoiled by Elson and was determined that was how Sonic should look. Ignorant little [censored], basically. As an adult I find a lot of it charming. I would agree he was more suited to Decap than Sonic.

I remember waaaay back in the mists of time when I did the Worst STC Moments countdown on my retrospective series, a lot of people actually voted McMahon's art to be on the list. I included it, but couldn't in good conscience put it any higher than it was, even though it did get a lot of votes (if I'd gone with the votes, it would easily have snagged second place). My justification was that his work was just mismatched rather than flat-out bad, his style better-suited DecapAttack, and that it was unfortunate that his art would come to be associated with some of the worst strips ever to appear in the comic.
Plus I think I spent that whole segment pronouncing his name wrong.

I didn't even care for it in Decap Attack. It looked cheap across all the STC mediums.
I can't speak outside of STC though, as that's the only comic I've read, aside from webcomics obviously.

I too have spoken out of turn about McMahon's art. I wasn't collecting STC as regularly towards the comic's end, but I do remember seeing a strip of Sonic and Amy in a kind of ancient Rome or Greece-esque setting, and absolutely hating the art. The characters just looked different, including the background characters - and I was used to seeing Elson's work in STC... and now I know his work outside of STC is much better, I feel bad for judging him too harshly.
However I still think that his work for STC is not the best the comic had.

On the plus side, Mambo, that issue gave us memorable and beloved villain Set.

Sonic and Amy in a kind of ancient Rome or Greece-esque setting I recall that. The "Amy toga" arc. It looked so off.

Yep, that's the one. I think it's the use of double lines that bugged me, although now I can see they are meant to be highlights. Also those eyes... O.o

The fact that everyone hates McMahon's vibrant, stylised look ... is depressing. I agree. The worst sin he commits is ignoring a Sonic The Comic house style that never existed, so his Sonic looks odd compared to everyone else. (Kitching and Stringer loved it too)

I think my biggest complaint would have been his colour pallette choices, quite muted compared to what the other artists were doing - some of his covers were much more zingy, did sombody else colour them?

Contrary to what my previous post may suggest I really didn't mind McMahon's style. To be honest I didn't think there was anything outstanding about it, but it got the job done well enough, the muted colouring style was quite refreshing compared to some of the louder strips. The above costume choice is the only significant "bug" I recall off-hand.

Ironically, that costume is about as "on model" as STC amy ever got to the post adventure games though! ANYHOO How's about that 260 guys?

Can I just say I thought both Flint and McMahon's Sonic art was bad but at least McMahon had Decap Attack and whenever someone else coloured his stuff.
Flint didn't have that.
But now I feel like an [censored].
260 was ok. Art was lush.
Quite like where the Knuckles story is going.

Just a quick thought, what is your backlog on scripts looking like? I know you find it easier to find people that can write rather than draw, but is the gap slowly closing? Are you catching up with outstanding scripts?

I'm actually a little confused about AntiVirus!Shadow....
So if I remember correctly, the Drakons made Shadow but when Kintobor found him he looked like a miniature Omni Viewer. It was Zachary who gave Shadow his physical form using Sonic's DNA.
The Shadow inhabiting the Internet is a program made by Kintobor (I think?!).... so why does he have the same form as Zachary's Shadow? How would Kintobor know what Shadow would look like in physical form?
Am I missing or forgetting something?

I think we'll have to file that under "speculations for everyone until if and when we give the suitably ludicrous explanation" for now.
