Any Legacy of Kain fans here? Come on now, raise your claws!
A while ago a little rumour was leaked about a possible game called Nosgoth; as in, the name of the land in which all of the Legacy of Kain games are set. To many this mean finally bringing closure to the series. Afterall, the last game, Defiance ended on a tiny weeny bit of an absolutely massive cliffhanger! Well, today Square Enix revealed what the game actually is:

The game is a free to play, teamwork based multiplayer; apparently set after Soul Reaver 1. Kain has disappeared, the vampire clans are leaderless, the human cattle have been set loose and there's a war raging. The idea is to team up with other players and kick some ass, conquer Nosgoth, suck on some necks, stuff like that... You get to pick a side: Vampires (no sparkly butts allowed!) with fancy powers or Humans with an array of weaponry and each side has three classes of character, each with their own abilities. The one that grabs my attention is the terrifying Razielim class. Fans of LoK will know that Raziel, Kain's first born son and right-hand vamp was cast into the Abyss for sprouting an impressive pair of wings, and his progeny wiped from this world like excrement from a boot! (my favourite line of SR1). For some reason in this game Raziel's clan apparently got better after their genocide and de-evolved into terrifying giant bat people whose job is to flap about, scout ahead and dive on their prey. As a massive LoK fan, what's really confusing for me is that the descendents of Raziel's little brothers Dumah and Turel also seem to have got better from horrible genetic mutations which turned them into beast-like vampires, rather than humanoid ones. *shrug* I guess all the time shuffling Kain did messed up his eventual progeny?
The reaction on the LoK Facebook page has been pretty vitriolic, the fans are clearly disappointed it isn't the revival of the series they were hoping for; but to me this seems like Square Enix is testing the water with this old franchise. The LoK series is pretty old, yet its not been forgotten; several references to Kain were found in Tomb Raider Legend and Underworld. I think they have got plans for it. Perhaps releasing a game like this, with a seemingly tenuous connection to the old games is just to see if the present gaming world can handle the return of Everyone's Favourite Green Vampire Overlord. I would have preferred a jump straight into the main series; but since the old head writer Amy Hennig left the LoK team I'm not sure if a new instalment would quite be the same anyway. The good news is the game will be completely free so its not like one has to shell out for it. I probably will give it a go... playing as a formidable bat person with pointy teeth and gnarly wings.
