Probably safest not to speculate. Seems likely it'll be a book of some kind. Ideally, it'd be STC collected editions but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what comes out of this. I imagine it'll be related to Sonic Boom in some way.

See, I was originally thinking that as well, but honestly I'm not so sure. They already have two Sonic comics series that are becoming more and more in-line with the games. They've obviously taken a huge interest recently in getting their franchise to tow the line. I can't see them releasing yet another comic to accompany the show. That said, I can't see them reviving STC either. I have my fingers crossed about reprints but I would not get my hopes up.

STC collections would be cool, IMO... but I don't see a STC revival happening either. For reasons stated before my post!

They're an American product only available here in specialty shops. Egmont are a European company who produce magazines and books for kids. They like to base things on TV franchises and the timing of this deal (if it is recent like that blurb says) points to it being an interest in the new cartoon. That said, whether it is or not, it doesn't necessarily mean a new comic. Today Egmont publishes kids' magazines with little to no comic strip material. I really think that STC reprints are unlikely at this stage. They'd have to get permission from the creators involved before they could legally publish that material and that's probably a headache too much even if they wanted to do it.

Playing devil's advocate here for a moment; could there be some possibility that this is a first move of sorts to try and shut down STC-O, on inctellectual property grounds or something? Not that Sega would have much of a reason to, given the project has been entirely non-profit (or at least one would think), though there may just be some possibility that Egmont might want in on a few extra pounds for their old stuff. As Andy mentioned, that would likely involve striking a deal with the original creators of the material if it were a plan.

Given Sega's involvement in the printing of the STC issue for SoS this year, I'd say their European arms are on the same side as the comic.

Could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure that they don't need the original creator's consent to reprint them. They were freelancers, and supposedly they didn't even get royalties for the reprints in the latter half of the comic's run, so one would assume Egmont/Sega hold all the cards. Either way, doubt it'll affect STC-O. Sega would have tried to do something about us looooong ago if they were uncomfortable with us.

Since STCO steers clear of any blatant money making ideas or print comics, there's not a lot to go after them for short of just being dicks. There's an adequate amount of 'fair use' to apply to STCO - and even though that's only actually got a legal definition in America rather than Europe, it'd be enough for Sega Europe to say it's not harming their trademarks enough to need to take action.
In short, STCO - as it currently is, and has been since about forever - is fairly safe.
I'd love for this to be about reprinting STC, or doing graphic novel collections like they've been doing for Archie. I think that may be a bit much to hold my breath for, though. I'd consider it more likely that if there were to be a Sonic comic coming from Egmont again, that it'd be a new thing (probably to do with that abortion of a cartoon they're doing). Maybe we could still see reprints of STC as part of that, but I think even that would be pushing it. It's pretty much the same as the SatAM situation - the relevancy of STC is long since past its sell by date.

We're safe. No need to worry about us just yet. As for what this is all about, it'll certainly be interesting to find out.

Naturally I'd be hoping for Sonic the Comic reprints as well, but I doubt it. They've moved out of comic books as I heard but who knows, maybe SEGA can grease the wheels a bit and show there is sufficient interest in a UK comic again. I mean, look at it; fans all over the world have kept it going for free for ten years and then you had the reprints at this year's Summer of Sonic. There's a market there, and that can't be denied. The issue is getting someone to decide they want to start it up again. It's the startup costs that are always the hurdle with these things. Ideally, we'd see a few years of reprints followed by new stories. But I think it's most likely that if a new Sonic comic did come to the UK in any shape or form, it'd have its own plotline and be unrelated to StC. Wishful thinking overall of course. Though since Egmont's in magazines and stuff, the consensus is it will probably be one of those activity books or the like we've seen around lately. But we can always dream of the day where there are two comics instead of one... In the meantime, I'll continue to futilely hope that Archie acquires the rights and expands into the UK market.

In the UK, copyright is held by the creator unless expressly given away. There's no such thing as a work-for-hire law here. It's possible that Egmont didn't know about this and just assumed they had the rights to reprint stuff. I know some editors at 2000AD have mentioned a cheque and docket system where a creator would sign something when they got their money that would hand over their rights but several creators including Mark Millar, Grant Morrison and Alan McKensie have mentioned never seeing one of these. It's arguable if it would count even if it was in use though. Of course, all of this is speculation until someone goes to court as a judge might find it differently. I also note that Egmont are publishing some classic fleetway material as ebooks like Roy of the Rovers so that may be a possibility.

It's possible that Egmont didn't know about this and just assumed they had the rights to reprint stuff. That's exactly what happened with 2000 AD: Egmont forgot to have everyone sign, apparently not being aware that was even being done. Legally, the STC creators would own their original characters. I doubt they'd have an issue as long as they got some reprint money though.

Coming soon: The Shortfuse Chronicles by Lew Stringer. Coming Sooner, Lew Stringer presents STC: 25 YEARS LATER, featuring the offspring of our heroes committing acts of juvenile delinquency against their teacher and making puns. Now I wish both these things were happening.

Hmm, reprints would be definitely good; they'd be nice prizes for the Sonic events I'm going to be holding Stateside. I do try to spread the joy of STC over in the States, after all. Not gonna lie. I kind of... want to see Stringer and Penders join forces and make a story like this. Just for the sheer entertainment value. It's the crossover fans have always wanted... but it ain't Kitching/Flynn as we expected. Be careful what you wish for indeed!

Crossing over Stringer and Penders would be like having a solid, reliable car that everyone in the industry goes "what a good car" over, and then dumping dog poo over it. (coincidentally, that's what the STC 25YL school bully Thug the Tomcat tries to do but he messed up and dumped the poo on himself!)

So, apropos of nothing, but I did spot this in waterstones the other day: Which features a swathe of the old comics and some of the cutaway features that appeared in the pages of TV21 I would guess which originally appeared in the 60 and 70s, and then reprinted as the thunderbirds comic back in the 90s comeback... if STC were to get a similar treatement (though admitedly would have to be broken down into more volumes) I would certainly be a happy fellow BTW, Guess who published this book? That'll be Egmont conspiracy fans...

It's not related to StC at all, it's just a bunch of activity books.
