I'm still fairly new to the forum, so I've been looking at a bunch of old threads. I noticed a lot of mixed feelings about the art and style over the years of the strips and got wondering; As of now, what do you look for in the art of the STC-O strips?
Now I'm not asking who you look for by name. I mean more, do you like tons of detail or more simplistic styles? Very colourful and vibrant or darker? Even just the kind of style you'd like to see more or less of.
I'm asking this for two reasons. One, because I'm genuinely interested in what people like in the art (probably because I'm an artist myself) and also because I'm looking to apply to be an STC-O artist. I want to know what people like so I know if my style is good for the comic. This may also help already existing STC-O artists in knowing what the readers like. Normally I'm against changing art solely to please others but in the case of creating comic pages, I feel it is a bit necessary.

Entirely depends on the script! If it's a light-hearted comedic piece then I think it's best to have a more streamlined, expressive style. It's also a great place for more off-the-wall styles to be showcased. More detailed, or darker styles should be kept for stories with a more furrowed brow. Also, good luck with your STC-O application! I presume you know all the details and stuff? Make sure to leave a message in the thread so we know to check our e-mail - we're notoriously bad at doing that.

An overall dark, foreboding feel. This is the grimmest incarnation of Sonic and it should have artwork to match.

This is the grimmest incarnation of Sonic It's really not though, is it? Need I remind you this continuity had an evil TV chef that attempted to drown Tails in a giant trifle?

You know what I was thinking about this quite a lot recently, now obviously Sonic the Comic had more stories aimed at much younger readers than archie did (after it's first 25 issues anyway) yet were still seen as the darkest and grimest world. I think that might just be the way that british fiction is seen by people outside the country, or maybe it's because of the implication of how evil jorge is? despite the fact he never does all that evil on panel but really STC is no darker than SATam or Archie (which has had far more characters implicitly and explicitly killed than we have, and a robotnik who probably been depicted as more sadistic than ours)... and is much much lighter than for example Jak 2 a platform game marketed at Kids, that remains a fun humour filled story with a story that the intended audience will take seriously. STC is also much less grim than Shadow, which was what rated 10+.

I thought that maybe STC was just darker and nastier than other Sonic fiction of its time, but Sonic fiction of its time included SatAm - where Robotnik has basically killed the entire planet and turned people into zombies who do his every bidding. Including some of Sonic's friends and his uncle! The SatAm premise is almost absurdly dark for a Sonic show.
Sonic's attitude and Super Sonic being evil are, however, 'dark' in a different way to every other Sonic fiction and that might be what throws people.
But going back to the art, STC and STC-O have both had a variety of art styles and I consider that one of the core strengths. If the style fits a script, I say run it!

That's why I find it similar to the original TMNT comic book. It strikes a balance between dark and brooding and completely insane.

Getting back on topic a bit, I mostly look for cleanliness in the lineart and good continuity panel-to-panel. If I can't tell what's going on from the art, then everything else (like tone and colour and amount of detail) is irrelevant.
Now, once you've got a solid base, I agree with Shay that it depends on the strip. And I have little to add to that.

Personally, I just look for the quality of the drawings and the designs. STC was always very expressive and the designs were incredibly creative. With Archie it's all a little too clean and on-model for my tastes, whereas STC had this lovely sense of variety and expressing the artists strengths over everything else. Best artists are like the best dancers- you can pick em out by the shapes they make.
oh gawd that got deep fast

Thank you everyone for all the comments! This really did help me figure out a good style to try Thank you! I actually got the sample script back back in a believe November, I just haven't had the chance to get to work on the pages. Thankfully semester ended yesterday so I'll be sending in my full application soon! Thanks, that means a lot!

I'm late to post this as usual, but I really like most of the art on STC-O The only stuff I'm not keen on is when panels are so busy it's hard to work out what's going on- I don't mean details in the background but sometimes when there are lots of characters in one panel it can be hard to work out what's going on. Have to admit over the last few years there has been very little of this, which is great! Anyway... that's all I have to say. Which wasn't much really...!

I loved how wonderfully hand-drawn STC was. I'm currently making my way through the whole run on my tablet (ah, nostalgia ) and, funnily enough, I just got to an issue where a fan letter basically tore Ed Hillyer apart. XD While he's not exactly my favourite, going back over the issues as I am, I'm really loving the felt-tip style approach many strips have.

I like darting around for cameos and other small details.
