In terms of older characters, there are a few I wouldn't mind seeing again, and I've already mentioned one idea for a new character.
Does anyone have any good ideas for new characters?

Is there even the smallest possibility that something survived Shadow's Chaos explosion in the Special Zone? <cough>Lord Sidewinder</cough> I can even imagine a semi-inventive way to explain his possible escape. Wasn't Mr. Fry incarcerated in a Mobian jail during the lamentable Trickster story? Perhaps all of Sidewinder's gang were moved from the Special Zone to Mobius (if you really felt the need to explain why, you could claim that Lieutenant Feror had demanded that Sidewinder be removed from his jurisdiction in exchange for letting Oscar the Pig walk free). That's assuming of course that it was the real Mr. Fry who Sonic fought (why would the prison officials let him keep his serum?)

Well, they had been committing crimes on Mobius in their last appearance (the Super Sonic story), so it seems reasonable to assume they were extradicted.

In their last appearance, Sidewinder and his gang had escaped from jail and sent Biohazard to Mobius through use of a teleportation device. At the end of the story Lieutenant Furor appeared to arrest them again. Biohazard was the only member of the group on Mobius in this story.
Although this would make Mr. Fry's later appearance in Mobius somewhat ambiguous.

Metropolis Zone police could request their extradition on the grounds that they conspired to abduct a resident of Mobius.

As for Robotnik, he went mad for a reason... But when he next returns (not for a few issues) he will be the main villain again. I'm pretty sure even devo will be psyched when he sees how. The Vichama-spirit-thingy/God of Death possesses his body. This is my guess, and it would be awesome.

Surely the Special Zone authorities are feeling a little too imploded at the moment to do anything?

Well, that goes without saying. However, I meant to say that the Special Zone authorities should have been responsible for Sidewinder and his actions before they were destroyed.

Listen if you guys bring Robotnik back, he better not be that stupid human-like one from Next-Gen Sonic. Make him more dangerous, like he was in the first Sonic's World Story...(STC 25?) There he looks like a dangerous lunatic, so you wouldn't have to have him stop being mad, just mad about Sonic. With those crazy eyes, and a limited vocabulary "Need time to think! Time to PLAN!", he could be a serious threat to Sonic, rather than that stupid Saturday Morning comic relief.
Ok, so maybe he was a threat to Sonic anyway, but he looked like a joke.
Lol, I'll tell you someone to bring back. Super Sonic, BUT as a seperate entity, rather than part of Sonic. We all know that Super Sonic was joined waaaaaayyyyy too soon back to Sonic again, that half of the seperation issues didn't even crop up. When did Sonic ever blame himself for NOT turning Super? Maybe he could have over Johnny at least, he could have at least mentioned it.

This is an interesting point. Would Sonic have turned Super if it meant defeating Chaos before he killed Johnny and stole the Chaos Emeralds. If he had, then Johnny would have almost certainly been saved, but at the possible cost of Super Sonic regaining his invincible powers by absorbing the energy from Chaos.

He's a Special Zone criminal mastermind, so shouldn't the Special Zone authorities be responsible for his imprisonment? It's also unlikely that they'd agree to extradite him to face trial for a comparatively minor crime such as conspiracy to kidnap when his crimes in the Special Zone are presumably much worse, if the "atomic bomb" reference in his first appearance is any indication.

It would be interesting to see Robotnik change his form again - the ability to reshape his body at will is his only real "super power". Admittedly, the "is that egg you" angle was probably only intended to be a comedic plot device to facilitate the change to the AoSTH look, but it was still a fairly inventive idea. I'm not saying that STC should fully adopt the goggled version of Robotnik from Sonic Adventure, but there's no real reason to keep using the AoSTH look long after the series is over. It's worth noting that Robotnik's appearance in STC changed even before he put on his new boots and coat during the Chaos story arc - even in the Stringer issues before that his cartoonish dome head and loose mouth had been de-emphasised. In any event, Robotnik turning into an egg for whatever reason would be a nice nod to the history of STC.

I like Robotnik being larger. I think it suits his character in this universe more.

in the earliest stages of development we had an artist called ron do a brilliant rendition of stc robotnik in his sonic adventure outfit. completely sold me on it all over again (after that similarly wonderful panel in #178).

I remember that panel being one of the previews on STEM. Gorgeous.
Do you still have those previews anywhere?

If Lord Sidewinder put on weight he would be the Kingpin.

yeah I don't see any kingpin likeness in that particular arc. kingpin has no interest in seeing the world end, and that was robotnik's entire character arc throughout that storyline.
i do have those images here, I might put them on the web again sometime

Character-wise, Robotnik comes off more as Norman Osborn. To paraphrase Spidey Kicks Butt, if you buy a nice car, Robotnik will steal it, blow it up, urinate on what's left, don a battle-armour, and beat you up while siccing hordes of Badniks on a random Zone just coz he CAN.

By #175, he's none of those things. He's much more interesting than that.
