Yeah, this might seem like a pretty pointless topic, but I was playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles this morning and even now, almost 15 years since I first played it, I'm finding new secrets and weird [censored]. So in this topic, we can share our favourite secret areas and strange glitches/fun things to do. Be they in Sonic 1, 2, 4, K or whatever...
Some examples:
- The secret area in Hidden Palace Zone. As Sonic and Tails, you use Tails to fly Sonic up and to the right. There's a 1-up. To your left, over the gap, there's a stash of one of every kind of power up. Just weird [censored].
- Flying Battery. Can't remember if it's on Act 1 or 2, but there's a spike trap that you can physically push out of the way to access a Super Ring. wtf?
More pls. I want to know all the series' secrets. Giggle.

If you turn on debug mode with Sonic 1, finish the level by going through the SS ring, pause on the scorecard and hold down the slow-motion button, there will be a "bubbles" background on the special stage (as long as it remains paused). When you unpause, it goes back to normal. Very weird.
If you leave the level select on in Sonic 3, leaving the menu music running, then after about an hour and a half a new bell-like instrument joins the tune for no apparent reason.
In Sonic Adventure, playing as Tails you can fly over the wall of the hotel if you stay close enough on the other side of the door, and reach Emerald Coast. Tails would not normally be able to play this stage.
Also, playing as Sonic in the Casinopolis level, you can reach the top part of the main hall (which can only be accessed normally by Knuckles) by Spin-dashing and jumping off one of the arches. This is difficult to do, however, and there's nothing up there anyway. It's also a bit glitchy in that there are invisible walls and floors you can fall through.

Connecting Sonic 1 with the S&K cartridge let you play in all of the latters special zones. IT may have been just a glitch but still fun ;D

I'm pretty sure that was intentional. You have to use a code to access it, even.

Basically if you put any cartridge in S&K you will get some of the "GET BLUE SPHERES!" special stages....
anyways secrets. Yes the secret store of all the powerups in the Hidden Palace is pretty nifty. Atm I cant think of any "secrets" that arent obvious, such as the many hidden power ups and giant rings in Carnival Night Zone... However in the same zone if you use the debug cheat you can find some really weird routes underneath the zone.. I think theyre supposed to be Knuckle's routes but theyre all odd and have loads of dead ends and I dont mean the walls only smashable by Knuckles..

If you watch this video, at 28 seconds, after you've passed the flame thrower, and onto the level below, there is a Super Ring and Fire Shield to the left, but there is also a hidden life to the right, before you go outside.

Not much of a secret I imagine, but if you take an alternate route in flying battery (act 2?), there's this large thing that looks like a battery moving back and forth. Don't know why, but I always found it odd. Perhaps because it's the only one (that I could find, at least).

Oh these are fun, I've done many stupid things whilst messing about with emulators with my friend at College when in break or when we couldnt be asked to work last year Sonic 2 wing fortress zone If you make a blind jump at one point in the level you'll find a hidden platform behind the ship, with a life in it, at first it looked like there was no way to get back up, like as if Sonic team were being kind, but later I found out if you jump to the left your caught by another air pick you up thing that takes you to safe grounds. In Sonic 3 Launch base using debug, try to find Knuckles boss as Tail's or Sonic. You know you get 2 of those ball swinging robots instead of 1 usually as Knuckles, destroy 1 of them as Sonic or Tail's, the floor drops you, which will kill you, use debug to stop yourselve being killed by the fall, and you get to complete that level with another boss flying around following you, and if you go far into the level and wait the boss will follow you all the way through the zone... then if you want you can kill it and get a "Tail's" or "Sonic" has completed act 2. Can't remember if it counts as finishing that level or if you have to complete it properly. Trying to go for Knuckles bosses as Sonic or Tail's in Angel island 1 using debug mode to go through Knuckles rocks, does not work, the screen moves up without you and kills you. & if you stand Sonic on an ice cube in Ice Cap, then break it with Tail's, wierd glitchy stuff happens to Sonic, like he can run in mid air. Debugging past most bosses on Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and avoiding them on the screen will often take you through the same zone you just played, but with all objects like rings, spikes and badniks removed. With Hyper Sonic and Tail's on Sky Sanctuary, use Tail's flying ability, and Hyper Sonic's secondary jump to get high up in the level to avoid fighting the Metal Sonic's, then when you get up to the teleporter just before the last metal Sonic, go a bit to the left and use Tail's flying to go up almost straight but a little to the left, then hyper Sonic jump up+left, you'll end up facing the last Metal Sonic and the Metal Sonic that launches the mini balloons at you. That's enough from me for now

in act two of Mushroom Hill at the last of the rope climbing devices (the one next to the chicken that blows wind - beyond that is a super ring), if you climb up the left rope you climb into the normal area. Spindash up that left wall and you come to an area with a lightning shield, and a fire shield.

I wasn't aware until recently that it's possible to backtrack throughout a fair portion of the first act in S3K's Angel Island Zone, act 2.
Good topic, by the way. I find it near-amazing how after more years and play-throughs than many of us would care to admit, it's possible to play through these older titles and still make new discoveries (e.g. the aforementioned power-up plethora in Hidden Palace Zone). Stages in modern installments just lack the same cleverness and depth.

Thanks for that. It takes me back to when I was with Mango, playing this. The incredulity that there would be a 1-up in the ceiling. The ceiling.

Spindash up that left wall and you come to an area with a lightning shield, and a fire shield. I found that once by chance... and for some reason it wouldnt let me get upto that bit again. Odd, that. Do you have to use the left rope to access it? Anyways I used to like getting as high up as possible as Sonic and Tails, theres a load of neat stuff thats not accessible as Sonic alone... there are some red springs that send you flying onto some of the platforms as well but its just getting up there in the first place. XD Also in Ice Cap Im sure theres a room FULL of rings somewhere. And also in Lava Reef, I only found it because as Hyper Sonic, the iddle TIME, SCORE and RINGS HUD start to flash when youre near a superring. It led me to secret room that Id never found before. Usually Id have all the emeralds before then anyway but meh.. always nice to find a big ring! XD

Towards the end of act 2. Can get there with a launcher or with Tails' help. There's also a super ring.
NO WAY! That's awesome. I had no idea. That's as cool as when I noticed that the ring icon spins faster the higher speed you travel in Sonic Advance 2.

In Flying Battery 2 I think it is, there is one of those rooms where your spose to get onto the moving platforms to go high up in the room. Around the ground is a set of spikes that you can actually push a bit to the side to get to a super ring room and a short cut underneath.
I didn't find this till recently by accidant

Sonic 1 - Labyrinth Zone Act 1
After a small part of the level, you should jump into a vertical shaft underwater, containing platforms that rise to a spike-filled ceiling, and a pair of switches. Go to the bottom switch, a platform will send you toward the spikes. Before you hit them, jump to a nearby platform and climb out of the shaft. A small platform will have appeared to take you to that upper path you're bound to have seen in Debug mode.
Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant Zone (Sorry Pombar) Act 2 (Really sorry Pombar)
Go through the level as usual, but at the start of the last third of the stage make damn sure you ascend the vertical shaft after the ramp, landing in the corridor with the moving block steps. After the steps will be one of those speed boosters that look like some DJ decks, followed by a small hill. Turn around, run left and jump toward the wall on the left when you reach the apex of the hump. Enjoy your shortcut, you won't get wet.

In Winged Fortress Zone, straight after you defeat Robotnik, don't follow him down the elevator shaft, but instead jump over that. Amongst the dead end scenery there's a hidden extra life.
also, in Chemical Plant Zone, act 2, on the first bit where you see the mega mack (with the two platforms, before it rises) if you jump straight down just before the bit of solid land you should land on a platform in the mega mack. Go slightly left for an extra life, then head right to redo that jumping moment, before the dreaded rising Mega Mack.

Everybody knows this, I'll bet.
Sonic 2, as Knuckles, Chemical Plant Zone, (either act 1 or 2, not sure, haven't played the game in years), there's a wall. You climb it, and there's an extra life. Glide left. To another rooftop, where another life awaits. Continue until you run out of rooftops. (there's about 5, I think)

One for Sonic 1 MS. Dont know how well known this one is, Ive known it ever since I can remember. Get to this bit, run or fall onto the spring, and midway though being pinged, jump, and you'll get stuck into the corner bit as shown. If you jump, you'll warp up to the above floor. This is actually an exceedingly handy glitch, as it saves pissing around with getting to the second floor the usual way.

anyways whats with the music on that video? It doesnt sound quite right... Something called Project Chaos- metal remixes of Sonic levels: Doomsday is particularly awesome. I just listened to that and felt inclined to google the project. Tell me the rest are of similar quality... Since I'm 7 minutes from finishing downloading the lot. Edit: Oh man I love you. A lot aren't that great, but the ones where 'Snappleman' is involved are damned awesome. The rest are too... techno/dance? For my liking.
