Ok, so Shenmue online was just annouced.... The info of this game is pretty vague, the story continues... but im not 100% sure Ryo is playable. The online capablity will allow players to interact with each other. Is online the right direction for the shenmue series?
Discuss if you will ;D

i wouldn't think the user would get to be Ryo for the reason, its a persistant world game, thus 5000 Ryos would be pretty uncontinutitive.
i wouldn't bet on it being released here in a hurry, korean and other eastern places are into this genre of game in a larger way than us (thats us as in we).
of course if it is like phantsy star hacked online then I wouldn't bother
but if it is a proper mmorpg it would be a good tour of japan and china, need beefed up hardware though
it could be repetetive seeing as shemue doesn't have monsters or wizzardary :/ I wouldn't wanna pay a tenner a month to beat up gangs, and weapons, he doesn't use weapons so in theory woman X wouldn't either? thens jobs, it unless its like seperate maps per person for jobs such as warehousing...
am I only only one noticing sega doing too many MMORPGs? Matrix, this, thats too many!

What im hoping they do is.. have this be shenmue 3, with the story and all, but make the online a seperate factor.

"Shemue Online is a massively multiplayer action RPG. The game will feature virtual recreations of areas from 1980s Hong Kong and China and promises to allow tens of thousands of players to assume the role of militants, using martial arts, Chinese weapons and other powers in real-time fighting sequences." "As mentioned in our previous article, a private beta test for Shenmue Online will take place in in November of this year in Korea, to be followed by a Korean open beta test and commercial launch in Spring of 2005. T2 Technology expects to have the game out in China also in 2005. Plans for release outside these two territories have yet to be revealed." IGN. "Sega revealed that it has also licensed two online PC games to third-party operators in China: Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst and CTRacer. CTRacer is a massively multiplayer online racing game" Some rubbish game website, www.shenmue-online.com/offical site.

I was discussing this on another forum and someone suggested that maybe this game would serve to fill in the gap between Shenmue II and Shenmue III. I'm guessing you assume the role of someone in Hong Kong or Kowloon after Ryo has left... having been thinking about it for a few days I think it would be quite cool to play a character in Kowloon having to deal with the Yellow Head Gang who pratically run the area.
However... it doesn't really have much to do with Ryo which is what I'm really after. How long are Sega going to toy with me!

Don't we all, shame if it is it won't be on DC, the great thing about shenmue was continuing it over to shenmue 2, if it was on the same memory card. still, I will be happy if shenmue 3 actualy gets released, and like shenmue 2, is left in japanese, grr, I had to buy a japanese import of shenmue because they dubbed it over here.

The thing is, since the Dreamcast has internet facilities, theoretically it may be possible to upload DC save files to a Sega site that could automatically convert them - so they could be downloaded again on, say, an Xbox, as an Xbox file.
Theoretically, of course. It might be worth contacting Sega and suggesting it to them, if you feel strongly enough about this.

This is on P.C.. so I doubt it will have the capability to continue your previous game from part 2 and 1. Im currently playing shenmue 2 again (first time on xbox though) and in my opinon, the sequence between don niu and Ryo fighting on the roof, is one of the best sequences in any game. It'll be a shame, if Shenmue online doesnt continue the story.

"Here's a little know fact" When they were making shenmue for saturn, Ryo was originally going to be Akira, when he was younger of course. seeing the preview for shenmue 1,2 for saturn is pretty amusing. It truely shows the power that saturn had.

Yes, Shenmue began life as a Virtua Fighter RPG didn't it I'm glad it didn't end up that way, it's far better as a brand new original story. And yes that rooftop sequence is one of my favourite gaming moments ever! It just was so unexpected and left me saying "Oh... My...God" I was terrified and kind of excited at the same time I don't want to spoil it for anyone though so I won't get into specific details.

After regaling the trailer, I utterly, loathe, detest, despise, revile, abhorr, and hate the fact that I'm incapable of comprehending Japanese. Lord Yu! Speak to me! (Incidentally, what miniscule particles of Japanese I do know were gleaned from the Japanese voice-acting in Shenmue II... I now can proclaim "Yes. OK." to everyone on the street when I visit Kyoto! Huzzah! ) I am genuinely excited about the potential for the expansion of the Shenmue saga that Shenmue Online conveys, even if at present its distirbution is being restricted to Korea and China. However, I have been extremely distraught, and eventually infuriated and angered, to witness supporters of the series suddenly possessing the ungrateful gall and audacity to petulantly and miserably mutter that it only portends failure and catastrophe for the series. The sheer, unremitting arrogance and ignorance of such opinions both astounds and appalls me. I find it despressingly reminiscent of the reaction to Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution, where thousands of curmudgeonly and introverted gamesplayers threw the game back at the Sonic Team's faces because it was "Yu-Gi-Oh" (you can view this odious opinion being expressed very frequently at PSO World) For Sonic Team's labour and effort to manufacture and sculpt a unique, individual title that sustains Sega's admirable dedication to excellent innovation to be blatantly insulted and scorned in this manner filled me with absolute and unremitting revulsion. Regrettably, I believe I can witness the tragedy of this inconsolable mindset in its incipient germination amongst the Shenmue community, as well. To all of those who would see fit to condemn Shenmue Online before it has even emerged from its pre-alpha stage, I would urgently exhort them to recognise this: the Shenmue saga is Yu Suzuki's magnum opus of gaming. All twenty-seven chapters of the project are his ardent, intense, and personal vision, and to scribe, illustrate, depict and dance the skeins of fate for Ryo and his compatriots is quite literally a labour of love for a man who is an undoubted royal Prince of the games industry. How could this revered and venerated nobleman of the Binary Order not approach any instalment of the series that is veritably his child without his utmost dedication, diligence, determination and devotion? To Shenmue gamers everywhere - recall the concepts of trust, faith, and loyalty.

Yes, I was over at ShenmueDojo forums lurking for info and alot of people there are very worried, but the general feeling there is that this is NOT Shenmue III, but an add-on if you like.
You don't play as Ryo, you are you're own character striving to be a Martial Arts master in your own right, and you just happen to be in Hong Kong while Ryo and the rest of the gang (Ren, Xiu Ying, Fang Mei, Wong etc) are there (I found this out on the ShenmueDojo forums, where someone is painstakingly translating excerts from the ShenmueOnline website I believe)
At first I was a little worried, but now I genuinelly quite looking forward to this. Even though it's unclear whether this title will be released outside of Korea and China. But I read that JCE are paying SEGA something like $25,000,000 (US) for this... I hope Sega put this money to good use *cough*SHENMUE III*cough*

The video that they showed most likely wont have anything to do with the game at all though Guess we gotta wait for shenmue 3 to continue ryo's quest.

From what I can gather (from what I've read on other forums and what not) it goes like this:
You are NOT Ryo. You are a martial artist trying to become a great Martial Arts Master. Ryo, Ren, etc exist as NPC. And it's set in the Shenmue world of Hong Kong from the looks of things.
So from the looks of it, this isn't Shenmue III, but more of an add-on to the previous games.

Oh right, sorry for the misunderstanding ;D
I think the game will be set during Shenmue II from what I've learnt about it so far.
