my top 50 greatest moments in modern videogames

ok this isnt an official list its just something that I though was cool when it happened to me in games. feel free to comment etc. anyway...

50: The world meets Dr Robotnik

Ah yes we all reached the end of the Green Hill Zone and there was those two platforms and the music cut and then changed to that more urm... scary? sounding music... and everyone who was young and played that game said the same thing when that happened... "Now what?" only to be then faced by sonics arch nemesis. A man who was shaped like an egg.

49: Mortal kombat 2, The fatality makes the papers.

Its such a cool game mummy you beat up this buy and then you decapitate him or burn him in acid. richard and judy hated it, the press said it would destroy moral values... and we spent all our pocket money trying to pull of the most grusome immages ever seen in videogames. now we just laugh at how tame they are.

48: Street Fighter 2: We pull off our first fireball.

I dont know it just makes you feel big and clever when you do it.

47: Half life: Dr Morgan has a bad day at work.

Yes we all thought... oh jesus whats this C**p when we waited ages for Dr Morgan to reach the reactor but when he did... holy sweet heavens... why cant my days at work be like this?

46: Grand theft auto teaches us how to steal cars.

Well I just point my joypad at a car and press the circle button. the series gets better and better and even assasinated tanner from the driver games!

45: Mario returns in 3d.

Come on we've all seen it and said... yeah its good. and most of us have played it and nodded even though we feel like trators to sega but it was a new landmark in the 3d gaming.

I love HalfLife!! I got stuck at the Office level, tho...meh 2 player on the PS2 versions pretty good, I just let Owen kill all the aliens n I figured out the puzzles!! hee hee...

I also loved Half-Life, I've compleated that, Opposing Force and Blue Shift because they are so freakin' addictive.

44: Red faction: Geo mod technology is born.

ok great game none the less but its best feature was the geo mod tech, this allowed you to tunnel through walls with explosives in a much more realistic way then ever before. I even played a game where I blasted a tunnel from one side of the map to the other planted lots of c4 charges and then hit them all with a fusion torpedo... it destroyed his entire base and he turned to me and said "how the hell did you do that?!"

43: The sony playstation 2 is confirmed to play Dvds!!!

ok not really a gaming moment but a great one. with dvd players going for £400 each. the paystation 2 gave us a dvd player as well as a psx/2 and much more all for a few hundred £ under the price... great stuff sony.

42: Doom returns from the grave.

it was one friday the 13th when a single immage was shown on the net featuring a hideously deformed man with some kind of monster behind it decaying in a very scary environment. the first impressions was a new zombie film. the second was the FMV for resident evil 4. then our eyes took us to below this image and it said.. doom 3. first IN GAME shot.

41: Tyrant 103 breaks the wall of the Raccon city police department.

this moment is here because it has made EVERYONE who has played it and not been aware of it jump out of their skins. after defeating the monster in the puzzle room and running out of ammo you leave the room and proceed down a wooden corridor creaking as you go. when suddenly the wall explodes and the tyrant bursts out of the wall and punches you back into a dead end. Time to lock and load against the zombie terminator.

40: Sonic twosday arrives.

Do I need to say anymore? we meet tails for the first time, we battle the first metalix (technically the silver sonic at the end) we turned into super sonic for the first time... and all asked the same question... How the hell do you defeat that robotnik at the end?!

well, it was 1991. Relatively modern when compared to Pong!! I guess its in our living memories, so I guess its kinda modern, but not contemporary....ehh..does that make sense?? And there are Sonic games similar to the original (GBA) that are modern.

Actually, I'd say the dogs leaping through the window in the original is the series' iconic moment.

39: Lara croft goes on her first adventure.

It came out of no where, no body knew who she was or what she did and then someone said Hey is she real? the answer was no. Which is a shame considering she won FHM's sexiest annimated woman on multiple occasions, But none the less tomb raider was the start of an amazing saga which broke into films... and then they released their last game and had to sell the franchise... grrrr

38: Metal gear solid revieals who revolver occelot was working for.

After battling liquid snake and metal gear you are presented with a charming final cut scene and then it goes all quiet and dark and revolver occellot is speaking to someone who turns out to be the third.. WHOA!! THE PRESIDENT WAS IN ON IT TOO!!! and then we wait for the sequal...

37: Abe says hello.

It makes everyone laugh who hears it for the first time...

"thats me... my name is abe" brilliant fun and theres something adictive about listening to him whail when he falls from a great hight. Oh abes oddessy... such fun.

36: Gran tourismo gives you the drive of your life.

What was they thinking? a driving game in which you have to pass a licence test before you can race?! Genius was one answer, great features, great cars, great visuals (on all versions) great games.

35: Aliens VS Predator comes out... again

Forget the panther version (remember that console?) the pc re kindled the idea and also enabled us to rekindle some alien a.ss. Scares the hell out of anyone who plays it, turns nice schoolboys into children of the devil who crave blood and finally lets us act out all those film fantasys we all secretly have.

Hmm...the revelation at the end of MGS was hardly the series' defining moment. Psycho Mantis battle? Hello?

AVP2 was way better than its predecessor. 'Bout time they stopped dillying around with naff Judge Dredd games and make a third one!

Well yes and no AVP2 was better but the point of the predator storyline, was there one? and also had AVP 1 not been a sucess then there would have been no AVP2 and AVP3 wouldnt even be at its beta right now.

also the psycho mantis was cool but then again whenever people talked about the next instalment the conversation would always move onto the point that the president was going to be a key feature in the storyline in some way.

lol hey thats a great moment I cheered when that happened! I really didnt like that character. dont know why just hated her.

anyway on with the countdown!

34: We finally get to say "I am God fear my wrath." and then we get a sacrifice.

black and white came out a few years ago and it looked like another god sim and you had a pet... whoopie. what we got was a game that not only allowed you to throw little people miles into the air and sacrifice children as well as smite the infidells and if your nice help people. we got a game that was basicly an evil detector! if the hand goes red your a santan guy all white and nice see you at the last supper... but the memorable moment is when you learn the lightning bolt miricle and acidently activate it on a solitary villager and watch him fry and his soul head up to heaven. brilliant fun.

33: Syphon filters stun gun.

you begin this game and you think oh great a metal gear clone that looks dodgy. what you get is a brilliant storyline, cool weapons and some fun levels, but you also get a stun gun that fires onto the bad guy and not only zaps them but if you hold it down for a long time they set on fire and they cry out in burning screams! its sick and disturbing... so why do I like it?

32: I just became a pokemon master... (why did I admit this)

if you dont know what pokemon is... STOP READING NOW THERES STILL TIME TO SAVE YOUR SOUL!!! if you did play the game you'll know how addictive it was and also the great feeling you get from defeating the final guy and becomming a pokemon master! hey I caught em all!

31: You lay the smacketh down on your friends candy ass!

Before smackdown wwf games were just pants. they were slow sluggish and just not so fun. But along came smackdown with amazing visuals smooth gameplay and SPEED! and the great moment is when SMACKDOWN appears on the screen and your character pulls of a killer move and you get the pin 1, 2, 3!

30: You pass the driver initiation test.

The original Driver was class in every sence, but it had one of the hardest first levels ever and if you were pants you couldnt play the whole game! So theres something fantastically rewarding when you complete the test and head out on your first job. But its also funny when he says "maybe I'll give you a call when I need a ride to the grocery store."

Woo! The Syphon Filter stun gun! Not sure how much of a gaming event it was, but it certainly was fun frying baddies from extremely long distances.

Surely everyone with a passing interest in games knows about that bit by now? My experience of FF extends to ten minutes on the PC demo of FFVIII and I knew that happens.

ok fokes here comes the rest of the countdown.

29: James bond comes back with a Goldeneye.

The n64 gave us some unusual games (blastcorps anyone?) and didnt last long. However it did revolutionise the first person shooter with a little help from agent 007. anyone who has played this game will tell you its as close to a perfect first person shooter as you'll likely get. Started lots of conventions and many of the features used in this game are adapted into other first person shooters. Its going to take something special to beat this and be just as original.

28: Bullet time comes to games.

Before enter the matrix came there was a man named max. Mr max payne had something that no other character before him had, He had a little thing called bullet time. It was a pretty cool moment when you dive into a room filled with seven men armed with m16's and you take them all out with a pistol whilst dodging incoming fire moving with ever so cool slowdown motion.

27: Destruction Derbys bowl arena

Right let me get this stright. its a driving game where winning isnt so important. But you score points for crashes? ok got my attention... and in one level you begin by driving into the centre of an arena with almost 20 other cars heading to the same point? WHOOPIE what a crash! its such fun and you want to do those levels again. and again and again! even more fun with a buddy playing with you too.

26: Medal of honour gives the world cowboy style deaths.

On the second level you find yourself walking through a town with germans on balcomies when you shot them they fall over the side like a cowboy in a western. never seen it before then and it was a very nice feature to look at. a lot better then simply falling over half hanging off the edge.

25: here comes the eye toy.

Digital cams have been around for a while now, However it was sony that actually gave them a use. the eye toy is the start of a new way to play games using yourself as the character, and it also has the aditional benefit of allowing yourself to dance in front of the screen like some loony all for fun.
