And also, keep in mind ALttP was made years before WW and even Ocarina, and therefore some of the official plot information IS outdated and shouldn't be counted if newer material is contradictory. I mean, Ganon's monster form in the 'main' games these days is no longer a blue pig standing on two feet, is it? I generally make it a rule to ignore retcons, I just see it as lazy story telling and if they are changed then you might as well take the games as individual entities anyway. ganon was revived as an insane pig in seasons/ages which was supposed to explain how he is seen as a mindless beast in the later games, but in AlTtp he isn't mindless otherwise he wouldn't have been able to organize a plot to escape. besides that we know that ganon is the same one from Oot because the director or someone who wrote the story (I cant remember who) said that Ocarina was the story that is told at the start of AlTtp about the knights sealing ganon away, and besides all that you cant just keep changing the story every few years because that just gets the fans mad.

Besides, the reason he became Ganon in Oracles was that the ritual was incomplete; unless he became more coherant whilst he was sealled away...

I think it's clear that the Zelda games take place in The Dreaming/Everywhen/Dreamtime and so all of the games happened in a vaguely related but non-specific timeline that is in fact more of a loop, or an eternal existance than a line.

He didn't want to destroy anything. And he was using the wind as poetic symbolisim to the harsh life he had growing up in the desert, and how he had desired Hyrule because it seemed like a paradise in comparision. It was just those few lines there which gave us insight to his psyche and motivations. A lot of people say he loved the land but envied, and therefore hated, the people. And it makes sense: In OoT, you only saw suffering in civillised areas. Hyrule Field was actually fairly blissful and not the wasteland I was expecting it to be. Well, considering Ganon was so envious about the rest of Hyrule being paradise, in OT, once he did manage to take over, he didnt waste any time turning the whole of Hyrule into a massive wasteland, so I didnt really buy that whole 'wind of death' speech he made in WW.

OBVIOUSLY a lot is going to happen in between Wind Waker and ALttP to bridge the rest of the gap, which I predict (and hope for) be the setting for a plot in a future Zelda: Ganon breaks free of the stone curse placed upon him by the Master Sword (a new Link removes it in a effort to try and defeat a different evil, for example), gets the full Triforce but goes completly insane somewhere down the line, explaining why he stays as a pig monster in ALttP and is sealed back in the Sacred Realm, therefore setting the stage for ALttP. Please, work for nintendo. Only problem is, if a game is set where ganondorf breaks free for events in 'later' games such as ALttP, the game must end wth Ganon 'winning.' Or do a Metroid Prime and have a normal ending with ganon being defeated, but then a secret cutscene with him rising up or something. But at that point, you can't tell people to go find an older game to find out what happens, it'd be so annoying! They'd have to remake it.... ;D

Sorry to bump, but Phantom Hour Glass = Handheld GOTY Confirmed.
Sonic Rush Adventure was fun and all, but this is simply the best DS game yet.
The game is the equivalent of Wind Waker in handheld form. The art style transfers perfectly to the DS and makes for easily one of the most appealing looking DS games yet and the game certainly does not miss a beat of the Wind Waker emotion and spunk. It's a direct sequel, so there's no "Where it placed!?" and even if you haven't played Wind Waker the game more than accessible. The controls are incredibly unique and unlike anything in the Zelda franchise, but they work amazingly well and you'll find yourself enjoying them within minutes. While only using the stylus is strange at first, you'll warm up to and realize that it really changes up and opens up new doors in the gameplay.
Don't take my word for it!

If it "isn't perfect", then how come they gave it 100%?
|
|
|
Post by Pombar on Oct 3, 2007 7:44:14 GMT
Because no game is ever perfect, and 100/100 would be a defunct, unawardable score. When giving full marks, it's more about all the reasons you come across that do make it a 10/10 than other niggling things that hold it back. There's always going to be something, however small, that stops it being 'perfect'. Thus, a 10/10 isn't perfect, since nothing is.

the story of AlTtp clearly states that ganon was sealed away and that he had been working to escape ever since so ww has to come after it, but other things suggest that it doesn't so like I said its best to take them all separate unless stated. Now that'd be good. At some point, Link has to lose his piece of the Tri-Force and Gannon has to comeinto possesion of it. Maybe at the end of one of the games, the new Link is swallowed/taken over by the evil power of the Tri-Force like he was warned about in TP (without going too much LOTR one ring), and gave the Tri-force to Ganon. Or Ganon slayed link in his insane onimusha form and took his piece, married Zelda and took her piece and then......mayhap a bad ending for once. And I always thought the reason Gannon became a pig, was because everything over in the Dark World of Alttp changes into an alternate form. It's the power of the Tri-Force, that's why Gannon is able to harness it in OOT again. But why does the tri-force not go fully to Gannon in OOT anyway? Surely he grabbed the whole thing, right? so how did a piece just fly off into Link and Zelda? OR were they born with it? Arggh. And if Gannon pig powers are just a side effect of the Tri-force, then perhaps Zelda 1 takes place before WW....because the Triforce is already split up into 8 parts. Thinking about it makes m head hurt. Links awakening can take place any time right? Seasons and Ages probably take place after Alttp....but you have to wonder why Link never meets Ganons Surrogate 'mothers?' again since OOT. Still, when are we actually going to get to visit the Golden Land, and see exactly where the Triforce is stored? I'd like to see a pre-Ganon Golden Land for once. Alttp tells us that many people battled to find the Golden Power, but only Gannondorf was succesfull, perhaps there should be one before OOT showing this evil war, and explaining how people found out about the Tri-Force in the first place. Maybe the Twilight Realm IS the Golden land....maybe not. No. But I'd like to play a game based on the pre game story of alttp anyway...you know, aganiehm taking power, soldiers failing to return from the Golden Land, the king being killed, and the six sages being taken prisoner into the Dark world. (Thinking about it, that's a pretty dark Zelda, your uncle dies, and so does the brave guy in the sanctuary who tries to protect Zelda, flute boy dies...sort of, his father goes insane and becomes a miserable drunk, most people in the village are afraid and hate Link, a death warrant is put on his head, people wander nto the Dark World and get twisted into weird creatures..) Since Alttp, not one Zelda has ended with the tri-force, complete I mean. Seasons and ages maybe...which would suggest they come after alttp, and those crazy Vaati episodes? Plus although 4 Sword Adventures is not 'canon' it IS the only game so far to feature both Ganon and Vaati, so perhaps there is some connection.... Couple of annoying things are not getting to explore enough of underwater Hyrule in WW, no light temple in OOT, and the fact that Gannondorf rides away from the castle, THEN goes into the temple of time.....and no one else even like,......I dunno. Just seems a little too convienant for me. And I'll have to get phantom Hourglass. Don't really mind if Vaati is in it, but Ganon should be the last guy, espeically as Vaati is essentially Dark Matter from the Kirby Games.

Ganon was not 'pure of heart' and so when he grabbed the Triforce it separated into its three parts, and chose who the remaining two pieces it would enter. Courage for Link, Wisdom for Zelda.

Just picked up PH, I've just arrived on the Isle of Ember. Good so far (best intro ever!) but I'm taking time to adjust to the stylus control. Possibly I'm just too used to the similar-but different handling of Animal Crossing.

I beat it a few weeks ago. Overall it's certainly, imo, the best DS game yet. I'd say on the level of Zelda games it's on par with Minish Cap and maybe even the Oracle games. The game utilizes the DS in nearly every way and it really makes you rethink about how you solve puzzles, which is great. The controls take some to get used to, but the game uses them quite well. Personally I'd rather see the game go back to a traditional style control (My hands hurt after an hour of play), but I wouldn't fret about seeing these return. From jotting down notes on your map to whistling at your ds, this game uses the DS' capabilities to it's height.
9/10 for me.
I could go into more detail if anyone would like.

You had me worried comparing it to the godawfully slow, dry, monotonous and uninteresting installments of the series that the Oracle games were, and even with the unambitious and samey Minish Cap, but the rest sounds grand. A bit of shaking up is what the Zelda series desperately needs.

It's a [censored]ing stealth game. I [censored]ing hate [censored]ing stealth games. ANGER. I'm guessing you're referring to the The Ocean King's Temple. Didn't bother me really, once you progress you learn tricks to simply just stun them and get on your way. The temple was a interesting spin, though I really would of rather not had to back track every time I went in there. The time limit put some nice pressure on however.

I'm having mixed feelings about this so far. It's decent, but I have yet to see any real justification of all the "best DS game ever" accolades. Also, would it really be so hard to include a "re-centre camera" button for the sailing bits? Dragging it around is astonishingly annoying.

Here's a really far out speculation The Ocean king was, in the end, shown as a huge whale. Beyond that little is known about the Ocean King. Now, tie this portrayal of the Ocean King to that of the Wind Fish. Certainly the Wind Fish played some hugely vital role upon the world, and it disappeared as mysteriously as it was presented (In a dream like world). At the end of Phantom Hourglass the Ocean King and the fairies make notice to that fact that the world they're in isn't that of the regular world. Is it possible that the world they were in was that of the dream world from Link's Awakening and that the Ocean King is in fact the Wind Fish? Just bouncing this ideas around.
