I was having an argument with a friend a couple of days abo about this and I wondered what you guys thought.
Which are better, old or new games??
I understand that games today have much better graphics, but which are more playable??
Personally, I prefer the old games (Space invaders, Manic Miner, Tetris etc) to Halo and GTA San Andreas - they might look a whole lot better but.. to me they just get boring and repetitive, whereas nothing can beat an hour or two slotting simple shapes together lol
So.. what do you guys think??

Intresting, this is.
To me, its quite hard to say. But I think I liketo play the older games. I'd rather play an excellent 8-Bit game with loads if replay value, then play a stunningly-looking but boring game that only lasts an hour or such.
Games these days (mostly from America) seem to act a lot more like movies then what they should be. Loads of violence and sometimes cheesy dialogue.
One of the reasons why I love Metroid Prime and Prime 2 is because they've been like how games of the past have been and yet it combines this with graphics of today. No (or hardly any) dialogue, just text. No unnessacary amount of violence. The 3D Metroid games are my favourites because they show how games should be. Lets leave all the dramatics and acting, that's boring. Just overcome difficult obstacles and fight in some of the most awesome boss battles ever.

Something that bugged me which Ive yet to decide on, It could be that ive become better at playing games but ever since a year after the psx came out, have videogames become
A: A lot shorter in their time to complete (games used to take me weeks if not months to do, and I wasnt in secondary school so I had a lot of free time)
B: So So much easier. I can remember playing loads of games and getting increadibly frustrated especially with the batman returns game where you faced a total of 1 bad guy at a time and if you got punched you would nearly die. Now I can have a hand gun on vice city and manage to outwit the 10 years on more advanced badguys with new AI thats designed to kill me I can take down 5 gang members armed with uzi's and escape with little trouble.
when you take this with the new games Vs old games argument I so wish that new games had the toughness factor of the older ones but keep everything else the new ones have. I really cant play old games anymore except for stuff like pacman, just because the sound hurts my ears and the graphics make me feel sick I think it must be the clashing colours.

Generally I do prefer a lot of the older games. Sonic games were much better, more playable and more fun when they were just simplistic platformers where you just run a lot and aim to jump on everything in sight, since Flickies Island they've been getting more and more complicated and it just doesn't suit the Sonic style. Sonic should be a game you don't need to 'learn' how to play. Also, no game in the whole world will ever be better than the most simple and basic of all games, Tetris. Put quite simply, it's is the greatest computer puzzle game in history, and is a perfect example of how complicated games just don't need to be to have endless lastetivity and addictiveness. The original concept of Tetris was invented nearly 20 years ago, and still nobody can do anything that anywhere near equals it. I do find with a lot of newer games they seem to have way more effort put into the graphics than the actual gameplay though, which is sad because if they could put equal effort in we'd all be in heaven. One thing I will say though regarding Sir Hogfather's point about difficulty, I don't think they are any easier in particular. When Sonic 3 was first released I was on half term from school and hanging around the town centre a lot. The Boots store there had a playable games cabinet, where they had Sonic 3 on display since it was then currently the latest and greatest game, and I actually managed to complete it from start to finish in 2 days without even owning a copy! Granted that wasn't with the Chaos Emeralds or with all the secret passages found, but a lot of the old games are like that, Sonic 1 was notoriously easy if you was over a certain age. There isn't really a definate answer to what's best, because it varies for each category. Platform games were much better than, as were puzzle games, before they became over-complicated, driving games obviously weren't. As much as I do love the retro stuff I do still love the likes of the GTA series and Crazy Taxi too.

I have to agree with Retro on this one. The newer games don't seem to be half original.

at least some people agree with me!
All my mates seem to think that all that matters is wonderful graphics and water effects and the like. but who cares about that when you can complete the game in less than 24hrs (I completed fable in 18hrs ish) and then forget about it for the rest of your life.
and I have to agree, sonic was a lot better when it was just a simple platformer lol.

It really depends on the game... Sure..the older sonic games were better...but many people feel game like Metroid prime are better than the original.

I like games more if they are a few years old...
Modern games seem to forget the “fun” factor haft of the time…

I love a lot of new games... But retro gaming will always be my passion. I love the old Sonic Games, there's a limitless amount of times that I'll go shove Mega Collection into my Gamecube to play. At least until I get some room in my room, and then I can take my Megadrive out of my brother's room. I'm also getting an original first-model Master System for Christmas, but my brother wrapped it up at the weekend, so I can't play it I think one of them may replace my NES on my shelves of glory, mainly because my NES crashes all the time But my shelves hold my NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube I love retro-gaming

Personally, I feel that there aren't an amazing amount of retro games that can still thrill today. Games tend not to age very well, IMO. Games like the Sonic series, Dynamite Headdy, Ristar, Rayman and Ecco have aged extremely well - they're still great to play nowadays and I'll never forget their impact on me. I played through Ristar and Flicky recently and was surprised at how engrossed I became. But truth be told, new games influence me more. The whole industry seems to be getting better with age, not the other way round as so many naysayers will have it. I don't yearn for the old '2D' days as much as many people here probably do, I think gamers have never had it so good. Remember the days when you couldn't save your game, and new MD games were upwards of £50? Good old days, my backside.

My favourite games are sidescrollers, and in this day and age it's hard to come by them on a newer console, so Retro tend to command my attention.
But the older days served up their fair share of utter bilge. In fact back then i'd say it was worse.

I like both old and new, though it has to be said if you made me choose I'd probably go with new. Basically, in my opinion, the 32-bit age was when gaming really started to fly (my three favourite games are all Saturn ones).

I have to say that I prefer new games rather then old. Both have served some great games, both have also served up some dire examples of gaming. But generally modern games with both interest and influence me more, with better gameplay, sound, controls, story and graphics.

You will probably need a new adaptor. The one that comes with the Master system stops working in four or five years. Recommended games are: Alex kidd in Miracle world(Hard as hell but fun) Hang-on (The motorcycle classic) Shinobi Wonderboy in Monster land Aztec adventure Alex kidd in Shinobi world(if you find the game, you are lucky) And of course....PHANTASY STAR!

Another game I recommend is Castle of Illusion. It is my favourite game EVER MADE. Raxadian, your name is an Alex Kidd reference, right? Or was that castle Radaxian? I can't remember.

I have Castle of Illusion for it already, to go alongside my Megadrive version. I HEART THAT GAME.
Oh, and I've got the Megadrive adaptor that works fine in it too, so I think I'm in the clear. My brother's girlfriend has a Master System 2 with Alex Kidd in Miracle World in it, but I want a copy myself. So I'll be on the lookout, and also for the other one..
Hang-on is built into my Master System, and I also have a cartridge copy. I have a Wonder Boy game, but dunno which one. It's fun though.
I also got copies of Psycho Fox and Rainbow Islands which makes me a very happy Mango.

I can't remember. I don’t know, it just happened to my original Master system adaptor… it got rusted like a very old armor. Raxadian is Alex Kidd Kingdom, and there was a castle there…the castle of Raxadian. Wonder boy in monster world is the one where you can buy items(Swords, armors, potions, boots, that kind of stuff).I think there was also a Genesis vercion...

b.o.t
I just think that with retor games there classic and can't be touched by the likes of halo, but games like halo are sure fire classics, and the new effects are brillant but of cource should never some before a good story, Just think of Gta sa they coldn't no brillant grapchic and a stae in which to play the game with No outside loading time, so there the game came before the graphic, and it was a instant sucess

(O+L+D)+(G+A+M+E+S)= T/H/E - B+(E+S+T) X 30 S+C-R/E+W+(all those new games) T+(H/I/S)+(IS-where)=it's at. There, the equation to sum up gaming.

lol,
i just find that the old style games are much more addictive and more playable without any complicated storylines or anything like that. a good game should be able to rely on the playbility of the game, rather than absolutely wonderful graphics and such. if there's no interest in the game itself, then its not worth releasing in my opinion lol.
and just a quick question.. what's everyone's favourite 'old' game?
mine has to be tetris. or manic miner. both are great! lol
;D
