That was my main gripe with the third generation titles. A massive up-yours to those of us who invested so much time and effort into the originals, if you ask me.

Actually, GameFreak invested months trying to make the GBA games compatible with the GBC games, but thanks to the GBA hardware the only way to do it would have been an expensive peripheral device - and they only went as far as theory with that.
They apologised for not being able to provide it, basically said it was Nintendo's fault and promised that they'd attempt to prevent such happenings again.
And, lo, they have.

They apologised for not being able to provide it, basically said it was Nintendo's fault and promised that they'd attempt to prevent such happenings again. And, lo, they have. Thanks for clearing that one up, I wasn't aware the developers had put forth any form of official apology. Though personally, I wouldn't have minded forking out for that expensive device in question if it allowed me to make the most of those 200-or-so hours of play from the first generation. Surely there was a way they could have made the GB titles compatible with Colosseum etc., though?

The reason they weren't compatible was because of the way the GBA acknowledged GBC software - and the modes weren't interchangeable or manageable. For the same reason as they couldn't get GBC > GBA to work, GBC in GBA > GCN wouldn't have.
I think the device they theorised would probably have been pretty similar to the dual slot function in the DS - with the GBA game in one slot and a GBC game in another - but presumably the cost and development of such a thing wasn't efficient enough so they scrapped it and set to work on an alternative solution (that being the marketing model that saw Colosseum and Fr/Lg being used to distribute Pokemon unavailable in R/S).
The third generation was, in many ways, a rebirth of the franchise - though a few people would say for the worse. I think we can presume that from now onwards, we'll see compatibility and connectivity across the Generational span. Especially when the Inevitable G/S Remakes (TM) come out and both the original GBC games are reborn in a compatible format and everything is more united again.

So long as they're always working on potential solutions, I'm content. Though I'm surprised that - to my knowledge - they didn't develop a Gamecube-GB/GBC link cable of sorts, allowing you to store creatures from Red/Blue etc. onto your Colosseum/XD save, before transferring them over to the GBA titles.
I'm not suggesting the developers should be flogged for such errors, or anything; these things happen. It's just a little saddening knowing that you can't use all those past hours of gameplay to their fullest potential; not to mention the time you'd have spent going out to receive Mew, Celebi and so on, even if they aren't essential to complete the National 'Dex.
I'm not so sure on you guys, but "download" events like those for Mew in the past are pretty hard to come by here, nowadays. I'm aware there was an official Pokemon convention of sorts in a nearby mall last weekend, but as far as I'm aware no downloadable creatures were on offer.

Unless you lived in Japan or New York, you have stood little to no chance of making much use of the events gone by since the days of Mew.
Though, thankfully, the option is there in Diamond and Pearl for such things to be distributed online - which will doubtless be the future for the unobtainables from now on. Japan has still been making fair use of giving out Pokemon at events though, there have been 6 Pokemon distributed for D/P since it launched - including the Deoxys and Darkrai giveaways with the 10th Movie this month. And you can add onto that the special Pokemon available through PBR if you so wish.
Once Europe gets its release finally at the end of the month - I expect we'll soon begin to hear the rumblings of an online giveaway, probably before the end of the year. It'll either be for Darkrai or just some random Pokemon (Magmortar and Electivire are popular giveaways due to the difficulty in obtaining them in-game), but it's a start.

The only problem with the trading system on D/P is that you have to have seen the Pokemon you're after at some point... pretty pointless offering something like a Manaphy if you haven't completed or own Ranger (like me).

That's only for the GTS. Just get someone you know to trade you whatever you want.

Oak... d'you have a Manaphy that I could trade, if only for the Pokedex entry?

I wish, Pokemon Ranger's kicking my ass way too much for me to get one. :/ I just can't catch that goddamned Salamence.

I picked up a DS today, finally, with Pearl and MP: Hunters. Problem: My router uses WPA encryption. Is there ANY way to get the DS to work with it? Or am I gonna have to fork out for the USB thang, which I've heard mixed opinions about. I do really wanna get online with this. One of my friends and my girlfriend both have the game now (I bought the game and a DS for her today too), so it would be cool to do stuff online when we can't always meet up.

Just enter your WPA key in the WiFi Settings.

That still works?

You sure you don't mean WEP?
WPA it says isn't compatible. But I want to know if there is a way to make it work.
WEP encryption allows a 32 character key.
WPA has a 64 character key.
Therefore I can't enter my entire WPA key onto the DS. I think the problem is now obvious.

That was the problem I had, and it said on the Nintendo DS customer support site that Nintendo DS' don't have support for the WPA encryption.

Oooh.. >_>
Why don't you just turn off encryption/take it down to WEP?

In short, not as secure. My dad's a bit anal about these things. And even though I could change it, I'd rather not annoy him by doing so. But I might try and wangle some of the cash for the WiFi USB out of him for this fact.

Get your FREE legitimate Mew - just bring along any GBA Pokemon game (why they can't put it onto the DS cart, I don't know), but excitment anyway!

Cool, a Belfast date. Incidentally, it'd be the GBA games because this is the exact same tour (also with Toys R Us) that America had about a year ago. Also, D/P's only just out here, a lot of people going to this will probably be buying it there (or trying to win it) and there hasn't yet been a Nintendo DS Pod distribution for D/P outside of Japan yet - so no tech to use for it yet. I'll definitely be taking my little brothers down to this one methinks.

I'm just bummed that the Toys R Us in Stoke isn't taking part, as it's much more local for me.
Time to check the train tickets, again...

Isn't Oldbury near Bridgnorth, in Shropshire?
EDIT: Nevermind- it's not that Oldbury, it's the one the other side of Birmingham.
The closest one to us, Maya, is probably Derby (which I can't make on the 11th) or Solihull.
