Even when my game arrives I wont be seeing any of you on it for quite a while. I'm at uni, so I dont have wireless broadband. I'll have to wait til I get home I guess. You could always pick up one of those USB sticks from Nintendo that give the DS (and Wii, but meh) a Wi-Fi connection if you plug it into any broadband enabled computer.

Thanks Pom, I may well do that. I was wondering, whats the length of this game like compared to the others?

Well, on my first play through, it took me 50 hours to get to the Elite 4. On Diamond, I'm on the Team Galactic quest before the 8th Gym and coming up to 30 hours.
So, you're talking at least 40 hours gameplay for just the Elite 4. And that's not counting the bazillion more hours you can spend just catching and training Pokemon to battle online.

^I beat the Elite Four around 16 hours, then again you probably evenly leveled your pokemon up and spent more time catching better ones. How long it takes you can probably really range.

I haven't got the game(s) (and probably won't without getting a DS in the forseeable future) but yet again, I'm sick of seeing the words 'Elite Four' crop up as the main goal to aim for.
Can't they think of anything original for the fourth generation of the main series, such as the tournament style of the anime (the variety of battlefields, the 'fishing for your opponent', etc)? No continuation of the story while you're at your final challenge (I assume there isn't any) or the opportunity for the terrorists to intercept (again, I'm thinking back to the TV show but it was more interesting).
It's always a great feeling when you defeat them the first time, but in Blue, I was always going back with new Pokémon. By the time Emerald came around, I was only looking forward to the National Dex and the Battle Frontier (<--- best idea ever). The Battle Tower really isn't much of a reward, either. Ever.
[/pointless rant]

There doesn't really need to be that much extra to do after the Elite 4 in D/P. The games are online.
The third game to D/P will probably have something extra like the Battle Frontier - GameFreak loves working in patterns.

Because 99% of the population lost count after the second generation, let alone what's gone since. Which, coincidentally, was around the same time the mainstream popularity of the franchise plummeted.

Actually, I don't know anyone who isn't a huge pokenerd who actually got gold or silver. Even by the time Yellow came out, the initial 'craze' was pretty much over. Since then it's been the people who do care about the series and number of pokemon who've been carrying the series (and out-of-touch parents). But yeah, another hundred certainly doesn't make a difference to me, 90% of the pokemon of the last generation or two have been lame and characterless anyway.

The mainstream popularity faded because the fad was over. Kids had new shiny BeyBlades and Yu-Gi-Oh and all that other crap that was copying what Pokemon did to fawn over and beg their parents to spend money on.
The whole mainstream popularity thing really doesn't matter a damn, it still has a massive enough fanbase for Diamond and Pearl to have sold over 6 million copies worldwide already (5 in Japan, 1 in America), for the anime to still be one of the top rated shows on either the American or UK Cartoon Networks and for the merchandise etc to still be selling well enough for new lines to come out every season.
So it's not a bad thing for anyone involved in the series that the fad is over. And I've already said on the last page why it's certainly not a bad thing that we get new Pokemon every generation.
As for the argument that the latest Pokemon have been "lame and characterless", that's just a "it's not the originals, so it's not as good" thing - which is nonsense. You can't grow to like the Pokemon if you don't want to - but you can't claim that they're rubbish if you don't even give them a chance, can you?

Yu-Gi-Oh is a rip off of Pokemon's marketing. As is almost everything like it, Beyblades, B-Daman, random Japanese monster anime #130391 and so on. They all copied the template that Pokemon set of bombarding kids and parents with an anime, games, toys, card games and a massive fad around it. And they played off the fact that it was all ZOMGZJAPANESEY.

I wistfully remember the days when we all rushed out onto the playground at breaktime to swap our Pokémon cards. Nobody knew how to play the game, but we all enjoyed having our faves (and Charizard, because he pwned all).
I know that there's no solid answer, but which game should I decide to get? I haven't actually seen it in the shops yet, but when I do, I'll probably get it.
On a related note, I recently got Mystery Dungeon. It's an interesting take on the series, to be sure. However, I don't really like it as much as the last Pokémon game I intensively played (Gold).

Kids had new shiny BeyBlades and Yu-Gi-Oh and all that other crap that was copying what Pokemon did to fawn over and beg their parents to spend money on. I'm not dismissing that point entirely, because it's certainly valid, but you can't pin the blame entirely on the attention span of Joe Average. Take the Harry Potter franchise for example - a decade on and it's going as strong as ever. Which, in fairness, is moreso down to clever marketing than introducing 100 new characters with each installment, but it goes to show that "fads" can sustain themselves for elongated periods of time, if the people involved are willing to make the effort. Erm... the fanbase? I never said it was, moreso the fact that we get 100+ with each generation. I just find it a little excessive, difficult to keep count, and a waste of time that could have been spent on doing something new and challenging with the main series. This isn't merely my personal opinion, either. Practically everyone I've spoken to who was or is a fan of the series, has stated this as being amongst their primary reasons for "going off" the franchise. That would be a good point, if it weren't for the fact that everyone says the majority of them are lame and characterless, without even mentioning the originals. And there's only so many Pikachu clones one can stomach. The "not giving them a chance" statement is rubbish, as well, considering that many of the later Pokedex additions still have their supporters. This goes back to what I was saying earlier - if they were willing to cut down the excessive number of new creatures they're introducing with each passing generation, and placing all of their creative energy into producing 30 or so recognisable, well-designed cast additions (as the "legendary" monsters, and more eccentric likes of Sudowoodo have proven they're capable of), them I'm sure we wouldn't be having this discussion to begin with.

Well, I have my DS now, and my copy of Pearl should be here by this time next week. I was just wondering though, has anyone else's DS ever kept asking for them to enter the initial settings if the DS has been switched off for a few hours, cos mine does. The weird thing is that it seems to have saved the time and date, but asks me to confirm it anyway. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I didnt know where else to ask.

The only bother I've ever had with mine is the fact that you can only play games if you insert them while the DS is switched off.

Anyone else think a Gold/Silver remake is inevitable?
I'm actually thinking about buying Emerald now, I've only played the game on an emulator and to a very low extent.

Anyone else think a Gold/Silver remake is inevitable? I think they should defiantly do it! A game of that caliber should be remade. But I sadly I doubt it will.

The amount of references to it staggered throughout the anime and D/P themselves is too great to even compile a list for. The definitive clue, of course, is the fact that the locations data for where you caught a Pokemon also includes a full set of Johto locations.

It better be, IMO G/S is more than worthy of a decent remake. I would say Pearl and Dimaond are also far more like Gold and Silver than Ruby and Sapphire ever was. It has the concepts of Ruby and Sapphire polished down a lot better. I find contests now quite funny and enjoyable rather than boring pick-a-move deversions. Plus double battles seem a lot better this time. I'ld fully condone picking up Emerald, it's much better than the games it's based on, they thow a truckload of extra trainers in to make training much more of a breeze and you have the whole subplot thing going on as well as the battle tower. Pick up Fire Red or Leaf Green as well, they're neat remakes. Also this Johto data Oak? is it visible in the game or something people have come by though checking the code in the game?

It's only visible by hacking currently, but when you trade a Pokemon caught in the Inevitable G/S Remakes (TM) you will see it in their data in D/P.
Incidentally, I also have a theory that unlike Yellow, Crystal and Emerald - which were all alternative Universes to the pair of games before them - the third game to D/P - which will inevitably follow in about 2/3 years - will be a sequel this time. For a number of reasons - one being that the Team Galactic plot, whilst wrapped up sufficiently for the purposes of finishing D/P, isn't complete at the end of the game. Cyrus doesn't give up and convert like Giovanni, Archie and Maxie, he tells the player he will try again and walks off. Even following that, the Team Galactic HQ is still running as normal - maintaining their original cover over the fact they're an evil organisation.
If it is a sequel, it means that the game will be similar to D/P in the respect that Sinnoh is geographically the same - but different completely concerning characters and plot. There are even hints in-game to what will happen to the Gym Leaders following D/P - such as Bryon moving on and Volkner becoming a member of the Elite 4.
GameFreak definitely have more or less the whole of the 4th Generation completely planned out in front of them, and have taken that advantage to include the beginnings of what's to come already. You could even say they've learned from their stumbling through the third Generation, when they were left with 184 Pokemon not available by any means in R/S and the need to get them into a game in some form - the fact that Colosseum boasted to do this first and then Fr/Lg were hastily announced and released a while after indicates that they weren't really too sure what way they should have approached it.
It should make for an interesting 3/4 years at any rate - and the forward planning should reflect in the quality of the games to come.

Te game arrived yeserday, but I had uni work to do so I've only been on it about an hour or so. I chose Chimchar, now level 10, a Starly I'm training at the moment and a Bidoof lv7. I'm glad the night and day system is back, it was what made gold and silver great. Not ventured past the first proper town yet. I'm savouring this adventure.
