It took me a while to decide, but I think I've finally settled on something as my Avatar: This is probably my favourite picture from the entire history of StC comics, so if you could fit that as my avatar I would be very grateful. Thanks guys!

If you have a picture in mind, take a screen grab of it (function and print screen does it for my lappy, might be different on yours), upload it into Photobucket.com or some hosting site like that, use the IMG tags link to post the picture in here. I'm sure the resident Avatar Hume Beeth will be able to make an avatar of it. I would recommend looking through the Index first to see if it's already there... we do have quite a large selection already. If you need more help please PM me or another mod.

As you may notice by my new Avatar, the new Forum Software allows us to use whatever we want as avatars. Just a warning, don't know if you guys as admins can curb that, or if maybe it's time to limit the avatars in the forum (I think it's two minor things that could open the forum wider to new people, a free choice of avvies and images in sigs, obviously with rules placed as to the use of both)

There have been polls and votes and discussions. It's highly unlikely that custom images will ever be allowed as avatars or in signatures. And looking at your animated sprite avatar, their choice seems pretty vindicated.

I don't know how a smaller than 60 per 60 image with two frames of animation that isn't showing anything we can't show a 6-year-old somehow vindicates that, though.

I dunno, I don't mind it at all. I wouldn't mind seeing custom avatars on here. Not sure about images in sigs, we'd need to see about that as it usually clutters up the forum, but I don't think more variety as far as avatars go could do any harm.

I noticed that too. I'm sure the mod team will mull it over. There are plenty of things this update has added, to be honest I'm still nosing through some of them!

Not sure about images in sigs, we'd need to see about that as it usually clutters up the forum, I think so far as regulated by rules with some sensibility in them, it can easily be allowed while keeping the more sober look the forum has. It's just a question of balance- while I appreciate that the fact there's some place on the internet to go to where you don't have huge signatures with blazing colours, allowing some small stuff can go a long term in allowing members, particularly new ones, feel cozier here. Something like 100 x 100 maximum for Avatars, 100x500 for signatures, with rules regulating no blinding colours, no animations over a threshold of 200kb or something (I'm not aware what's the usual acceptable size for a gif to run easy on slower connections, I'm afraid, so don't follow this 200kb number as anything), keeping it safe for work? I dunno. I'm probably overstepping boundaries by insisting so much, I'm just trying to make a case here. I even did a mockup on Photoshop Something that is easily scrolled past. Dunno, just spitballing ideas at this point RE: the signature. Avatars I do think it's time to open up though.

Yeah we've never had custom avatars and sigs were disabled in 2005, we'll have a chat on the mod forum, and I log in as the admin and take a look at it all

I'm guessing this makes my position redundant, then. Incidentally, the new look is hideous. That's not an "OMG it's new so it sucks" reaction, it genuinely looks like arse and I despise it.

I quite like the forum without images in sigs but not so bothered about people choosing their own avatars so long as there's a size limit.

Should also be mentioned everyone should have, unlike Proboards is completely different from every other forum provider, an option they can click on in their profiles to disable all signatures by default.

Call me a traditionalist or pure old curmudgeon but I think the site's already starting to look ugly. Images of all shapes and sizes, it just seems a bit messy. But it's something nobody else is feeling and that's fine.
I don't know if it's in this thread or another, but I echo the idea that this place looks ugly as hell. I've grumbled my way through numerous gradual Facebook updates, but this... I really don't want to post things on STC-O now :/ Petty, yes, but a five year old has a better chance of throwing together something more visually pleasing. I'm getting "stories from around the web" like "A Mom's Guide to Looking Effortlessly Chic" for goodness sake. I'm out.

No one really likes the new look, change can be annoying, but we don't have much of an option, Proboards hosts us... we update with them or we lose 9 years of forum content. It's not a great option but there we go. Like I said the mods will look into putting everything as right as possible, but as the only regular mod with admin access, who also has a full time job, a uni degree to do as well as stc art duties, I can only do what I can do when I have chance. but i'm sorry people feel that because of things beyond our control control there going forever

Right a notice will be going out to everyone... but the ability to chose a non STC avatar and to have image sigs has been removed, people who have changed to non STC images can you please change back to stc/stco images, if you would like a different avatar please as ever request an avatar.

Fine, although I think this is biting a gift horse. Now that you've even managed to remove the ads at the end of each thread, all it would take would be a rule not allowing big avatars and sigs, and those who didn't like sigs would in four clicks make them go away Profile -> Edit Profile -> Settings -> "Show Signatures - Displays member signatures with their posts." checked off. Bah. Heaven forbid allowing some cozyness. Anyway in that case and returning to this thread's original intent, I'd like this one added, please.

Jon Grays brillant super Sonic is not an avatar selectable from the super sonic section making Jon Gray the first archie artist to draw Sonic characters in Archie (issue 134) The first who art appeared in the STC time line and the first to bee an STC-O avatar and sorry KKM it's not to be mean it just these were the style guidelines of the forum set out when it was founded, I am happy to have a debate over changing it, but for the mean time it locked back to the way it was and we'll review it

Let's get rid of the silly no non-stc avatars rule, yeah? Might encourage some conversation to have some different ones for a change. It also, in my opinion, makes members more distinctive and memorable.
We have literally no reason not to do this.

like I said i'm happy to have the debate, at the same time I have had a number of comments pm and the like asking sig images to be removed and lamenting the loss of the avatar system. I want to balance between both side of the argument, for now though moo would you mind changing back to at stc/stco avatar and I'll throw a poll up after work?
