Good old reliable Fullmetal Alchemist. Mind, the vast majority of the clever plot hooks that were inserted and hidden throughout the series have paid off, and it's just the rushing towards the inevitable conclusion now, but said payoffs make this a glorious conclusion. I've been watching the current anime adaptation, and while it's miles better than the original's take on it all, the rushed style they've been employing for the first 30 episodes doesn't really do the manga's writing justice. Given that they've had to slow things way, way down where they are now from what I hear, they could've spent more time on the early stuff and balanced it all out better. Ah well. But yeah, FMA is probably going to remain unbeaten as the best written and most deftly plotted popular shounen series for decades. At points it's rivalled Urasawa's writing, which is pretty much unique amongst shounen, let alone popular mass-appeal action shounen. One Piece has had a great cumulative climactic sequence of its own, but it didn't all feed in together so well as FMA's, and was still bogged down in some shounen action tropes.

I've just heard about this early nineties crossover thing called Death Mate, which seems to get a lot of bad press. What was it all about?

I see.
Quite a mess, from the looks of things. Going by that description it was the single most nineties comic ever produced.

Going by that description it was the single most nineties comic ever produced. No, that's the Doom comic. Or Punisher 2099. Sample dialogue. "How old are you?" "29. calibre." "Where do you live?" "On the edge.

Does anyone know if there are decent collected editions of the Chris Claremont/John Byrne Uncanny X-Men series (the one that started with Giant-Size X-Men #1)? I have the first Marvel Masterworks one but they're rather expensive now.

I really need to read the whole of FMA. Just read the last chapter. Crowning Moment of Heartwarming or what?

I have the first Marvel Masterworks one but they're rather expensive now. There's these "Marvel Pocketbooks" thingies that were released a few years ago - scaled-down, bargain-price books. I got the Days of Future Past collection, which has that story and a few issues either side. The art's been shrunk, but it's done quite well and it was only 4 quid. There are a few others - I definitely remember seeing the Dark Phoenix saga. Dunno if that helps...

I think I saw them advertised, but I never actually noticed them in any shops. I might have another look.

Jaime Reyes, the third Blue Beetle, may be getting his own live-action TV series.
Colour me excited.

An unconventional choice. Most people aren't very familiar with the Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle = Ringo Starr gene spliced with a Blue Meanie. Yes, I know it was "Beatle", but you have to admit that'd be some fantastic television.

An unconventional choice. Most people aren't very familiar with the Blue Beetle. They've been trying to promote the current incarnation of the character for some time now; editorial kept his ongoing alive as long as possible, he's shown up in numerous other titles since and he's a frequent guest on Brave and the Bold. I'm not quite sure why they're doing it - since Blue Beetle's never exactly been A-list material - but I'm just happy Jaime's getting some lovin'.

Well, they went to the trouble of killing off Ted Kord so I guess they just want to make the most of his replacement. I think they tried something similar when Kyle Raynar took over from Hal Jordan.

Jaime's transition hasn't quite been as drastic, though: editorial insisted on killing off the entire Green Lantern Corp to make Kyle seem more special. Keith Giffen - Jaime's main writer - did pretty much the opposite by revelling in Blue Beetle's legacy, such as it is.
And, while some people are still seething, most BB fans accepted Jaime pretty quickly. Unlike Kyle and Hal fans who still argue to this day.

I admit that I've not really read a lot about the new Blue Beetle. I've heard that it's good, though. Actually, I don't really read very many current superhero comics. I like Invincible and I like Young Avengers whenever it's about, but not many others.

Batman! The Long Halloween, to be precise. Worth a look? I was thinking of picking it up in Waterstone's ridiculous "3 for 2 on EVERY FICTION BOOK" offer.

Definitely reccomend it! Jaime Reyes is going to be in Smallville in an episode written by Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Blackest Night, The Flash and Smallville episodes Legion and Absolute Justice). It's a Blue Beetle and Booster Gold team up. Here's the Blue Beetle footage from comiccon: I liked it but the end shocked me. I thought his name was pronounced "Jayme" kind of like the French word for I like. Watching this it's pronounced "Hi-May". It's like the guy who plays Hurley in Lost first name is Jorge so obviously I thought "George" but it's pronounced "[censored]-hey". That's my story.

Been on a comics binge recently. I was super-hyped to see Ricardo Delgado's new Age of Reptiles series for Dark Horse wrap up with it's fourth issue. Absolutely sensational work, and essential for anyone who's ever even had a passing obsession with dinosaurs. It's probably the ultimate dinosaur-related thing I've ever seen, tbh. I hope for more from him, but as it is I'm thankful to just have this new one. The ending fight was the icing on the cake of a perfect series - T-Rex vs prehistoric crocodile, anyone? Also very keen on Ron Marz's Artifacts series for Top Cow. It's a proper blockbuster crossover epic that I've been waiting all year for, and the first issue didn't disappoint, can't wait for the other twelve parts. After re-reading Preacher (and getting as many other people as I can into them), I had to start following The Boys for my Garth Ennis fix. It's largely hit and miss, but good entertainment, and nobody does offensive [censored] like Ennis.
