If anyone hasn't seen them yet, here they are. In my opinion they are an absolute joke. Really disappointed in them but I haven't seen all the films so I'm not really in a position to comment I guess. But from what I have seen of some, there were many great films omitted for key awards.
Best Picture
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Millk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
I would have done it like this:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
The Wrestler
The Changeling
The Reader
I haven't seen Milk but Slumdog Millionaire isn't THAT good as it should be ahead of The Wrestler or The Changeling. It's just popcorn cinema. The Changeling is one of the best films I've seen in a long time.
Best Director
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Frost Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Exactly the same as Best Picture. And I'd change it almost exactly with a couple of differences
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (David Fincher)
Revolutionary Road (Sam Mendes)
The Changeling (Clint Eastwood)
Slumdog Millionare (Danny Boyle)
The Dark Knight (Chris Nolan)
The Dark Knight is included here because it is a fantastic film and superbly directed. It could also have a nod for best picture as it was the highest grossing film of last year but Hollywood politics dictate superhero movies are cheap so...
Best Actor in a Leading Role
Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)
Sean Penn (Milk)
Brad Pitt (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button)
Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
This category isn't too bad and I can't think of any changes for it except maybe sticking in Leonardo Di Caprio somewhere.
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)
Angelina Jolie (Changeling)
Melissa Leo (Frozen River)
Meryl Streep (Doubt)
Kate Winslet (The Reader)
Pretty much the same as what I would have to be fair so no real complaints
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Josh Brolin (Milk)
Robert Downey Jr (Tropic Thunder)
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road)
It's a moot point because it has Heath Ledger's name written all over it but I would replace Michael Shannon in favour of John Malkovich of Changeling
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams (Doubt)
Penelope Cruz (Vicky Christina Barcelona)
Viola Davis (Doubt)
Taraji P Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)
Cate Blanchett misses out in Benjamin Button here and Kate Winslet misses out when she was favourite to get the second Oscar. I'm not a Winslet fan but I feel she could have been nominated instead of Penelope Cruz.
Best Original Screenplay
Frozen River
Happy Go Lucky
In Bruges
Milk
Wall-E
I would do it like this
The Wrestler
Changeling
Wall-E
and any two others (possibly Autralia)
Best Adapted Screenplay
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Again I'd take out Slumdog Millionaire as it is just popcorn cinema and repace it with Revolutonary Road.
So needless to say I am disappointed with the major nominations and disagree with most of them. But ah well, that as they say, is life...
