Yep, the first issue went live on 29 May 2003. The earliest e-mail I still have about the project, though, is from 26 April 2000 where Mike wanted opinions on the new Tekno design he was proposing. There must have been conversations before this between Tom and myself, though, but I don't know what became of them. And Tom had obviously been discussing it with Dave and others earlier still.
Curiously, the earliest e-mail from me sketches out pretty much what I want to do with #250, so I guess that idea pre-dated everything. I also have my first thoughts on what to do for a Tails story:
"The biggest problem we have is that Tails has become too confident. So I'd start out showing him feel that he's really grown as a character, but maybe fails to save some explorers in the Aquatic Ruin Zone before a flood breaks. He'd feel guilty and start to question himself."
And later:
"Some archeologists are investigating the Aquatic Ruin Zone when the flood barrier breaks and they're trapped. None of the police can get there so Tails has to go in. But his confidence is [censored]tered when he finds that much of the zone is crumbling - it's ancient after all. Perhaps there are two archeologists and one of them drowns. Tails sees that he's failed; it would be especially good if the other one blamed Tails, and Tails agreed. Perhaps the writing would be pitched so people would think the accusation unfair, but none of the characters would see this."
Which would have been dull, angsty rubbish, no doubt. Glad I didn't go with anything like that.

As opposed to the regular dull rubbish you spew out each issue now? I unfortunately lost pretty much every e-mail ever pre-2003 so I don't have any of those anymore, but I remember my first ideas involving something from Space that was similar to the Drakons or something (Only I'd forgotten about the Drakons at the time, it was before they re-appeared in the Chaos saga). One story I'm very glad it got ditched, though oddly enough, some of the ideas from it are still present in the upcoming arc. The Tekno story just begun is also from back then too thinking on it, though obviously the story as matured a lot into something 100x better! And I'm still using that Tekno redesign! See the 3D model of her in the pin-ups? That's the same design, 4 years later! Mike

Nah, it was good the comic lasted so long. Though it did cause a curfuffle over whether to start the online numbering at 185 (after the last new story) or at 224 (after the last issue). I wanted 185 since we'd worked with that numbering since the start, but 224 was a cooler looking number.

There was a big argument about where to start the numbering. We planned to start with #185, but then the project seemed to die a death. Until I believed the comic could actually continue long-term, I wanted to start with #1. Tom fought to have it start with #224. In actual fact, it was quite liberating. The #200 plans are good for #250, and I have longer to build it up. The only difference is that it will take a little longer to pay off some of the material we've established.

I think you made the right decision about starting at Issue 224.

I remember that back then STEM (remember STEM, anyone?) had some sort of 'STC-O Comiing Soon' message up, and I emailed from my Dreamcast asking if you lot wanted any fan art doing.... Then forgot about it or a couple of years. heh heh heh.... --Thalia, thinking how pointless this comment is
