I love the res series... yes even the survivor ones... (not played the newsest survivor) anyway...
I got this yesterday and finally got around to playing it today.
after the interesting intro comes and goes and we see a familiar scene of dr birkin decimating the umbrella special forces but from a rats point of view. and finishing with a disturbing scene of a dying man getting eaten alive by hundreds of rats the initial reaction is...
"this is going to be on a richard and judys 'parents beware' special"
then you begin in a bar and it comes under attack from zombies, and in the very early stages of the game (if you play as the cop) you learn where the outbreak started and the city began to transform into zombies.
the first impressions of the game is that its on the ps2 so it wont be the best looking but none the less the visuals are pretty impressive (especially if your tv supports 60hts). And there will be some questionable moments due to the PS2 being the lowest tech wise of the 3 main machines but as its proved over and over again just because it has the tech specs a nassa spacecraft doesnt mean that its going to get off the ground on unledded petrol from asda.
So what do I judge it on first? Well lets start off with the fact its around number 10 in the series if you include the spinoffs so theres a number of questions about originality. So lets ask is it original?
the answer is... noooooyessss.... how closed are your eyes?
Right it looks like all the other survival horrors out there and it should play exactly the same as the previous res evils and the controls should be the same right? Wrong! the controls are very different, if you play this game as you do res 3 you'll be dead in the first room. the some controlls are the same but theres subtle differences which fool you. for example I tried shooting a zombie in the head and ended up kicking the air in front of me. And once you get in the game you'll be reminded just how little you do know about the game,
you play this game as though your 6 years old have never picked up a ps2 joypad for the first time and told to get an s ranking in resident evil 3 on the hardest setting. You play this game totally as newbie. which is good, or bad, depends how you look at it, I find it good.
now the controls at first are sloppy but once you get used to it you'll feel right at home.
the atmosphere is back again and it isnt old, yes its the city and yes its been done before but its a new part of the city and new areas to explore, and with classic resident evil you dont know what to expect.
The zombies themselves are back (wouldnt be res otherwise) and so far the only monsters ive found are zombies of various sex's and crows. but they are unlike any zombie from a survival horror game ive ever seen. with resident evil 1 they would slowly walk and lunge at you when you were in close range. res 2 they were the same but it was harder to avoid. in res 3 they ran a little... in this one they run, form groups and come for you and even throw punches at you if you try to avoid! its like bruce lee meets 28 days later. These zombies should indeed not be underestimated when you first play.
it so far seems to be a great game... However there are some set backs which make it a good and not great game...
first off the loading times are awful they are the longest ever which is odd considering code veronicas were pretty fast and this is a more advanced game with better coding... the going into another room loading times are really bad and the cut scene loading times are awful.
and this leads onto the cut scenes themselves... they are all subtitled. Great! but thats not great... have you ever played a game with subtitles and they are mispelled? well these arnt mispelled they are mistranslated to the max! for example say the characters voice over goes.
"GO!"
the subtitle is...
"Quick I'll cover you with my shotgun! GO!"
and its on every single line! its horribly distracting and terrible!!
now some people say the fact that the uk version has no online ability is a let down but I couldnt care less on this.
So in conclusion. resident evil outbreak is a good game, but there will be people who will hate it and they only have themselves to blame. However this doesnt mean its the worst game ever in fact it is pretty dam good, it just has some really annoying aspects about it.
