Right I just saw this on TV and I couldnt believe what I heard.
Apparently on some online games like everquest and other online games where you can form groups of people you may have been a victim of whats getting known as rapes and raids.
what these are is as follows. you pay your money to play everquest online and you have to pay money also to get special items that arnt availible otherwise. e.g. magical swords etc. But alas there are gangs of people who have formed together and what they do is they raid your base of home (whatever it is in the game) and steal your items which you have paid real world money for e.g. £1 for a sword. these gangs will now watch you and if you pay more money (real world currency) for these rare items they will rob you again, (this is known as rape. continuous attacks) and you will lose the items you paid money for. I dont play everquest online so I dont know fully how this is possible but this is where the unbelievable thing comes...
the makers of everquest online and a number of other online games are creating virtual policemen who will patroll the game to try and catch the gangs (raiders) in sting operations and even rumours that in some gangs they have undercover regulators gathering evidence against them!
that may sound crazy but this gets even more crazier... since this is technically a real crime you paid for something and then it was stolen from you, the evidence gathered can be used to prosicute the gangs in a court of law!
To my knowledge no one yet has filed a lawsuit but it goes to show you just how crazy the internet is getting, I mean whats next the ability to go to toilet over the internet? why not to have real sex is possible... grayham norton showed some interesting devices that plug into the USB port... and they arnt mice or scanners thats for sure.

Rape on these games is usually used to say of being totally overwealmed and killed by monsters and/or other players.
If someone pays real money for game items and loses them it is their fault.
I don't believe it to be possible, as surely the game's housing system has the ability to secure items. Secondly the if one buys an item it ought to be on their person, and thirdly the game (ought as every other game) has non player storeage which is impossable to manipulate.
And the game runners don't (shouldn't) condone selling of items with real money and should not sell items themselves.
I think you are refering to player killing, in which gangs of people attack others, knacking them and taking their gear after their death.
One more thing if the game's houses can be stolen from (which I doubt highly) it is within the game so nothing is bad.
A final thing games have the equivelent to 'police' by the Game Masters which have ethereal powers on the game.

¬_¬The same could be said for any expansion set ever made. No, he means people (sadacts!) that spend money to buy items from within one of these MMORPGs are sad and deserve to lose these ill gained things.

I remember hearing Simon on Gamezville talking about this once. It is true to happen, and it is bad....but seriously. Who spends money on items! Donating to a game is one thing....buying items for your character? come on.....
A simple lock patch could solve all this...ie those items cannt be stolen or what.
Like doing this...
*retro puts paper in pocket*
*Retro hears pickpockets hand going for it*
AHA! Thought youde outsmart ol Retro huh?
*Thief just punches Retro and takes the stuff anyway*

-_- And the Everquest people call 'raids' attacks on monsters' temples and caves.
Everquest doesn't even have a housing system.
You ought not believe what some criminal on the television has told you, Gamesville person, right?
*May actually have a housing system

Didn't a mutual system of buying and selling items start on Phantasy Star Online for the dreamcast?
I agree with Sin, if you spend actual money on stuff just for a GAME you deserve to lose it.

I agree with Sin, if you spend actual money on stuff just for a GAME you deserve to lose it. That's a bit bluddy-minded. People spending money on a game enhancement is nothing new, it's essentially the same as buying a game and purchasing mission packs etc. What is so wrong with a committed player buying an add-on to improve his game?

What I meant was its fine to spend money on an exapnsion pack because unless someone breaks into your house and steal it the you can always get stuff from it.
BUt if you spend money just so you can say you have 'insert random magic sword name here' and are only level ten and haven't done much, then if you do lose this item then TS

It's not the same as buying an expension pack, these people buy an item in a game with proper money do so as they are too lazy to play the game themselves. Getting a slightly stronger thing for x amount isn't that much of an add-on. These would be the people that conpensate for being sad by standing around the populated areas of the game and show off their items.

hmm... so basically:
"crappy player with rich parents" > "dedicated poor player with no credit card"
becuase some snot-nosed kid got his parents to buy him the "Sword of mega slaying +4"?
This kind of thing has been suggested on the forums of every MMORPG i've ever played. For god's sake, if you want an item, kill monsters for it. Otherwise what's the point?
Example
Kid A: Hey, you playing that MMORPG tonight? I found a cool place we can hunt. Kid B: No need. I got my parents to purchase 99 extra levels for my character, as well as every rare item in the game. Now i'm invincible, so there's really no point in me playig the game." Kid A: I ... see... *punch*
Bah, sorry, but paying for items ingame with real money is the most ridiculous idea ever.

That is the most perceptive thing anyone could have said. ……Ummm…….Yeah……..
Perhaps I was a bit harsh with my comment, but I just can’t understand the logic of spending real money on a string of code. I am not on about people to pay to play MMORPGs or people who pay £10 for a better sword, that is just hobby expense. It is just these stories I hear about people buying characters and items for over £1000 or more and I just can’t understand it.
I’m not really an expert on MMORPGs so could someone answer me this. Who actually owns the characters and items on a game? Is this whole market legal? Because, for example, imagine if Everquest shut down, they delete your character because you are performing an illegal activity or you get the item stolen. Do they have to refund you £5300 pounds because you spent it to some Ebay user to get a sword of stabbing +5.
Basically, spending money is unsecured in the real world, but you are spending it in a world that you have no real control over. One that could shut down, destroy, delete or just thrown you off at any given time. I’m going to take my comment back, I don’t feel that these people deserve to be robbed. But I can’t feel any pity for them, only (sadly) a slight bit of amusement.
