Watched it last night and it was pretty decent. Not the shockingly bad comedy I expected. Jim Carrey is brilliant is always. Haven't seen any film he is bad in though so you know...
8/10.

I saw that too the other day. Was alright, though one thing bugged me somewhat: When he and the girl are fleeing from the guard in the opera house, the guard asks him to stop and he does. The girl then tells him to continue, and he utters something like "Guess you can't please everyone". Considering that the rest of the film after that has him being forced to be told that exact same message until he got it in his head, it's a bit silly that he's sort of already realised that, no? But yes, good film. Won't win any medals for excellence (and Madhair will sit here and tell us how it's not a work of art as well ), but an enjoyable film none-the-less.

Still haven't seen it despite a smattering review from the one person I trust when it comes to [censored] looking movies.

It's a Jim Carrey movie. If you enjoy Jim Carrey movies, you'll enjoy this. It's got exactly the same humour you'll find in any other Carrey movie. It's pretty fun, but I don't think it'll be making any top lists.

It's the exact same movie as Liar Liar.

It's pretty fun, but I don't think it'll be making any top lists. I agree for the most part except for the implication that every Jim Carrey movie is the same. I agree it's his basic kinda humor but it's not the same as ANY other Carrey movie. Jim Carrey and Robin Williams both get typecast like this and everyone thinks they are just the goofy guys. This is partly why they are my favourite actors. Anyone who has seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Number 23 will know what I mean. My favourite film happens to be a Carrey film too (Man On The Moon). This film is no different than what people have come to expect of him thanks to films like Liar Liar, but it's not the same as any other Jim Carrey film.

The Truman Show is the best Jim Carrey film, followed very closely by Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. Everything else is good but not great, except for Liar Liar which is excellent, and The Number 23 which is horrid.

I didn't say that, nor did I mean to imply it. It's just quite simply that Jim Carrey has a style of comic acting that he carries across in the majority of the movies he is in. Let's face it, no-one was watching the Ace Ventura movies for the script.

It's by far his best performance and a brilliant movie. But Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine closely follow. I have to say I loved The Number 23. I thought it was fantastic.

It's a decent movie, but nothing really noteworthy. As X said, it's Liar Liar..

He was good in Batman Forever. The film as a whole sucks, though.
And no, Yes Man is not a work of art. I saw it recently and it's a testament to Jim Carrey's comic ability that I actually found it enjoyable. It's a perfectly enjoyable family comedy, like most of his movies.
It's also a commercial for Red Bull. The amount of product placement in this flick is staggering...
(Also, as me and the friend we saw it with can testify, the film is a lot funnier if you relate almost every line to AIDS in some way. Yes, we're childish. Couldn't stop laughing at the seminar scene because of this)
Edit: Also, I spent a lot of time wondering where Danny Wallace's obligatory cameo would show up until I spotted him.
Have any of you read his book, upon which this film is loosely based? It's woeful.

I for one disliked Ace Ventura and The Cable Guy (Ben Stiller's directing sucks and completely killed that movie). Also yeah, I never claimed it to be a work of art just an enjoyable movie in it's own right and not one of the really [censored] comedies that are released way too often and seem to be the fashion.

The thing with the Red Bull, from what I remember, is that he was drinking it after a long night out of constant drinking and whatnot. The joke was that he was wired on energy drink; how could they do it without such a worldwide recognised brand of energy drink? (I'm actually asking here, not playing devil's advocate or something).

They could have established a fictional one, or used coffee.

This is only loosely based on Danny Wallace's book, is it not? For example, doesnt Carrey's character get hypnotised into it a la Shallow Hal rather than being dared whilst drunk?! Anyways, I dont like Jim Carrey when he tries to be funny... because he isnt! :S His more serious films arent so bad... Edit: NINE THOUSAAAA.... *banned* XD

Well, being an atheist, maybe thats why I didnt find it funny! XD
I did like Ace Ventura, the first few times I saw it... purely for the inane style of humour. Liiiiiiike a glooove! XD
It gets old really fast, though and When Nature Calls just sucked.

Yeah, When Nature Calls kind of blew. And Bruce Almighty was a bit lame.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge Carrey fan, but Dumb And Dumber, Pet Detective and Liar Liar are all great comedies.
As for his serious stuff, I've only actually seen the last 15 minutes of The Truman Show, so I've got nothing to say on the matter.

I'm a great fan of Carrey, I'm gonna go against the general consensus and admit I wasn't actually a fan of Eternal Sunshine, was an ok movie but nowhere near as good as people made out. Haven't seen The Number 23 yet, the previews I saw didn't really make it particularly appeal to me. I still think Dumb and Dumber is possibly the funniest comedy ever.
Must say though, I think Cable Guy is criminally underrated, I remember it got badly slated when it first came out because it was Jim Carrey trying to do something different from his usual face-pulling antics, but I thought he was really good in it, and the film itself is nowhere near as bad as people make out either.

I thought Jim Carrey was brilliant in the Cable Guy but Ben Stiller killed that movie. He should never direct. Or act. Hell, he should have to request permission to breathe.

Just because Ben Stiller's made a couple of mistakes, doesn't mean he's not a good actor.
Well, he's not a great actor, but he's good for the types of roles he plays and movies he is in are generally okay to good comedies.
