It has to be said Egg Pawns were never as cool as the Egg Robo. Surprised that they haven't done an Adventure styled one yet.
Also in Casino Part and Bingo Highway on Sonic Heroes the Egg Pawns were unique to those levels.

I was really pleased to see so many classic Badnik designs return though; they look great in 3D. What Badniks? I've had a look through some gameplay videos but I can't see any classic ones?

Motobugs, Spinies, Buzzbombers, Choppers and the shark ones from Sonic 3 Hydrocity (?). Ummm. DS version has the bat ones from Sonic 3 I think, Orbinauts...
Could be more, I can't remember right now.

There's a different old-school Badnik featured in each 'world'. Since the Egg Pawns aren't exactly traditional enemies (most of the time, they just stand around cheering and jumping up and down - Sonic just smashed them 'cos he's a dick like that), they're actually the only real enemies in the levels...

I think I did actually see one of those ball-spit-out-head things from Chemical Plant Zone when I was watching footage. Still, there's a treat then for when I eventually get to playing through.

Kind of had time to gather my thoughts on the game, and I absolutely love it. The dialogue and voice-acting are bloody good. I found myself laughing out loud (loling, if you will) on several occasions; the banter between Sonic and Tails is almost STC-esque (although with Tails being less of a pushover - seriously, I love him in this game), and Orbot and Cubot are the best characters to come out of the franchise for a good long while. The music is amazing as well. I am so glad they didn't just go down the generic rock route, but I'm equally as glad they didn't go down the kinda... impactless music of Unleashed. The tunes are all funky, upbeat, and fast-paced, and suit the Zone they're assigned to perfectly. The level design is really what steals the show for me, though. It's not just an upper path and a lower path, or a linear route with some slight deviation - there are TONS of different routes in this game, packed with collectibles and hidden goodies. I was also kind of expecting the whole thing to be a big "press boost to win" affair, but again, no! I think you'll spend more time slowing down and platforming then you will just speeding through a pretty landscape, and it really works in the game's favour. Even when you are speeding through a pretty landscape, there's plenty of alternate routes to take and actual interaction is necessary to win. What's more, you're discouraged for just launching through a level - if you want those S Ranks, you need to take your time and rack up as many points as possible. Time bonuses play a much smaller part in Colours. The Wisps are made great use of as well - I was really expecting the Wisps to either be underused and all but forgotten, or overused and broken, but they all work really well (with the arguable exception of the Frenzy, IMO, more on that in a minute) and actually compliment the level design. They remind me very much of the Mario Galaxy transformations, actually, and that can only "bee" (shut up its 3AM) a good thing. Bad points, I do find that the controls can be a bit stiff at times. The jump button in particular kind of needs to be pressed a split second before I'd like, and it feels really stiff at points. The double-jump goes a fair way to fixing this, but sometimes I do find myself plummeting to my death when I could swear my reactions were right on. This problem extends to the Frenzy Wisp power as well. While not game-breaking, the Frenzy Wisp is REALLY difficult to control. Sonic takes off in the direction you're facing, and you need to make slight adjustments with the analogue stick (turning right around is near impossible). That problem only exists when using it in the 3D perspective, but in both 3D and 2D, jumping with the Frenzy is completely temperamental. Maybe I just suck, but I found a few times that Sonic would just get stuck to a wall and refuse to jump up it. Also, Super Sonic is actually a handicap, I feel. You can't use Wisp Powers when he is selected, and since they're basically necessary to get a fair number of points in most levels, he spends most of his time in the dug-out. It is pretty fun to just blast through some enemies as him, and he breaks Terminal Velocity Act 1 so hard it hurts, but I thought he'd be some kind of game-breaking superpower that I'd turn on to break some heads. A wee bit disappointing, but it's something I went "aww" about before getting distracted by how [censored]ing good the game is. So yeah. Best 3D Sonic game? I'd say so. I know that ain't saying much, like, but it's the first 3D Sonic I can safely say is a quality game even without applying Sonic standards. Oh, and a final note, eeeee classic Badniks! :3 I just about creamed when I say that bit in Starlight Carnival where you have that race with the Motobugs. Much later edit: There are so many typos and sloppy sentences in this post that it makes me cringe. D:

Got it yesterday.
Initially, it seemed a bit easy. Difficulty went up slowly, which is good. There are some cheap deaths, mostly due to a lack of foreknowledge, (worst example so far was in Sweet Mountain, where you're running, and the road dips, and then four groups of three Egg Pawns are RIGHT [censored]ING THERE OH MY GOD WHERE ARE THE BRAKES ON THIS THING?!) but nothing as bad as those whirlpool-raft-jumpy-floaty things oh god the pain in Unleashed. Graphically gorgeous (the colours, children!)
The walljump is very awkward (although I am playing with Wii-remote and nunchuk, so it might be that, I'll have to dig up the GC controller), and the controls in general take a bit of getting used to. Would be nice if the homing attack was motion controlled, though.
How do you unlock Super Sonic? Do you have to collect all the red rings?

Yeah. Those unlock all the stages on the Robo-Sonic thing, and completing those gets you Super.

Yeah, I'm ignoring every Sonic game between Adventure and Colours. Maybe this guy can finally get back on track after over a decade of bad games.

Its true, there are a bunch of cheap pits lying about some of the stages. Overall, if Sonic Team continue do design games such as Sonic Colours and improve upon the formula, I'd say the future is looking pretty bright. I'm not sure about ignoring EVERY other Sonic game between Colours and Adventure, but I can see why it would be a good idea to do so (*cough* Sonic 06 *cough*).

Nah, it seems like someone used the ink in its pure form (Cyan, yellow and magenta plus toner) as opposed to mixing them for different colours. Which sort of defeats the point of Sonic Colours...

What sort of size telly are most peopleplaying this on? We've got it on a twenty nch widescreen TV, and it does have a few issues, paticularly when the camera decides to zoom out to show you all the platforms and you're left looking at a character whose less than half a centimetre tall, and platforms less than an inch wide. Makes it horribly fiddly, unless I've missed an option to zoom in more in these 2D sections.

Have to admit on my 32" is zooms out too far on some of the later 2D segments.
Playing Wii version. Its ok. In a bit of two minds about it.
1) Insanely beautiful. It makes up for Shadow and Sonic 06 with just pure gorgeousness. 2) Soundtrack is lovely. 3) Eggman is awesome in this. I mean seriously ignore all of the jokey PSA stuff and all he needs is a mask and he is STC Robotnik. 4) I like Orbot and Cubot. Not in a Scratch and Grounder way but in a "Hey I would like to see these guys again way." 5) Level design is ok. Multiple routes a la Sonic Rush more than classic Sonic but they are there. 6) Wisps are interesting. 7) I like the story. I like that Tails isn't a complete punching bag for the return of [censored] Sonic. 8) Bosses were kinda odd I thought. Sometimes they are piss easy sometimes they can be stupidly frustrating. 9) GET RID OF LIVES ALREADY. I MEAN CHRIST. 10) Still too many context sensitive controls - B trigger is boost and drift. 11) I find it awkward to do the quick step on the nunchuck alone. 12) The inability to go backwards doesn't magically fix camera problems it just disguises them 13) As does the inability to explore the environment. 14) Too many times I expect Sonic's forward jump momentum to reach the platform I'm aiming for only just to fall short.
So overall its ok.
