I like both. Can afford one. Which would you get? Give reasons. No bias.

Only major thing is what games you'de prefer to have a blast at.
360: Halo Gears of War Fable Mass Effect Alan Wake Crackdown Splinter Cell
PS3: God of War Ratchet and Clank InFamous Heavy Rain Metal Gear Solid Killzone Demon's Souls Uncharted

Everybody I know that owns a 360 has had to have a new one at least once, one person three times, a couple twice. Going back a bit but when I worked at gamestation, three or four new machines came back faulty every week. I'd say that the reliability of the console is reason enough not to get one. Its certainly why I won't be getting one.

I've had three 360s and have enjoyed them, but have also enjoyed what I have played on the PS3. The thing always stopping me from getting one was that I had a 360 already. Now that I have neither, thinking of getting a PS3. And before anyone mentions "What about your gamerscore" I have a life and am not a virgin, discounting the only two reasons for having concern whatsoever for the numbers beneath my internet name.

As Retro says, the exclusives thing is probably the best thing to go on.
I'd recommend the PS3 mainly for monetary value. The 360 is only cheaper if you don't want to play it. If you have the [censored]ing cheek to want to save your game, go buy a £40 harddrive. And if you want to play online, how about buying a £40 wireless adapter and THEN paying £40 a year to play online with people you don't like.
And no amount of money you pay will make the console work.
Plus, sooner or later we'll all need a Blu-Ray player.
Though most of these arguments are voided by the 360 S, since it has built in wireless, a built in harddrive and the PS3 is introducing its own paid online service (but, as far as I'm aware, online multiplayer and stuff is still going to be free).
And that's gonna be £50 cheaper than the smaller model PS3. On t'other hand, you can buy a pre-owned PS3, which you can't do with a 360 as it won't work. Ever (has a pre-owned 360 that works fine). So you can pick up a reliable PS3 for less than a 360 S.
So it's your call. PS3.
EDIT
Only major thing is what games you'de prefer to have a blast at. 360: Halo Gears of War Fable Mass Effect Alan Wake Crackdown Splinter Cell PS3: God of War Ratchet and Clank InFamous Heavy Rain Metal Gear Solid Killzone Demon's Souls Uncharted
It's probably worth noting that a few of those 360 games are also available on PC. So if you have a decent PC and still won't to play Mass Effect or whatever, you've still got that choice if you go for a PS3, but AFAIK none of the PS3 list are available on anything else.
Still, I'd imagine you're like me and PC games either aren't an option or you hate playing stuff on PC, so it's probably not a factor you need to take into account.

At this stage, they're kinda frustratingly equal - if this were a few years ago, the 360 would be unquestionably the better (and cheaper) investment, but Sony's pulled it back with a fair amount of triple A exclusives over the past couple of years as developers really get to grips with the Cell Processor. You could probably lean towards the 360 if you're not a fan of motion controls, 'cos Kinect is going to be pretty separate from traditional gaming, while Sony's pushing for Move integration into pretty much everything.
Then again, if you really want to be able to wave a Wiimote 'Wand' around to play Heavy Rain with, that could be a good thing.
It's really hard to call, but if you've already experienced a lot of the 360's exclusives, then a PS3 would probably be a good way to go.

Wait for the new model of 360 then buy that, it's cheaper.

... And if you want to play online, how about buying a £40 wireless adapter... Not strictly true. Assuming you've got an OK PC with a wireless card built into it, or even just a modem and a long enough Ethernet cable, you don't need to shell out for the Xbox wireless adapter (unless you really hate trailing cables). I've managed to hook up an Xbox via a frankly slow as hell laptop without any considerate lag or connection problems outside of the norm. That doesn't really help sway the decision, but it's £40 you don't need to spend.

Yes. Don't forget Yakuza. It's like Shenmue except worse but still oddly compelling.

Now I just have visions of the Yakuza going to people's homes and beating them up because they dont have a PS3.

Yakuza is pretty much a [censored] Shenmue that is still pretty awesome despite being slow as hell.
The only reasons for me to stay at the Goodship 360 are Mass Effect 3 and Halo Reach. And my future room mate is getting them anyway.

Stop saying you like Halo. That's just trolling and it's out of order.
Grow up and buy a [censored]ing PS3 you [censored].

I say get a PS3, its overall a better system IMPO. At least for RPGS, Platformers, and the controls are a bit better for some of the fighting games (at least to me they are.)
Plus with a PS3 you can have Internet off the bat if you have wireless..but with the 360 you have to buy an adapter. (at least I did.) And the PS3 has more fun games to download then the 360.
