Warning! Discussion of a very NSFW show within!
(Actually, it's not really suitable for... anywhere, this show. Ho-hum.)
Panty and Stocking (with Garterbelt) has just reached its 13th episode, and what I thought was the last one.
However, second season has been CONFIRMED!
Which is a fantastic Christmas present, if you ask me.
But anyway, since it's no longer a dead/nearly dead show, I can now open up a thread with a clear conscience.
I'd like to remind everyone, in all seriousness, that this show is rife with gore and sex (although never with the typical intention - it's all played for laughs, and actually, in some cases, in seriousness), so anyone offended by these things should probably just click off this page.
Anyway.
I won't spoil anything in this first post, but this show is absolutely brilliant. Panty and Stocking (with Garterbelt) tells the story of two angels, Panty and Stocking, who were kicked out of heaven for their bad behaviour. They now live with Garterbelt, a black priest with a massive afro, who gives them missions to exterminate Ghosts. By exterminating Ghosts, they collect Heaven Coins, which will eventually permit them access back into heaven. Joined by the buttmonkey Brief, and an obvious send-up of Invader Zim's GIR called Chuck, the two angels set out to get back into Heaven.
So far, so cliché, right?
But where PSG really excels is in its execution. The whole program is presented as a loving homage to American cartoons - the kinda stuff you'd be likely to find on the Cartoon Network back when it was actually good - The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, etc.
And it actually works. The whole thing is a seamless package - animation styles come and go, and while you notice them (as is the intention), they never feel jarring - not even when the Cartoon Network-esque Panty stands in front of another character drawn in traditional anime style. There are written sound effects everywhere (some being completely ridiculous, such as "NICE DUNK!", and "RED CARPET", and another one which I won't type here, it's very, VERY rude), and I can't help but be drawn in by the amount of passion that's gone into this - you can tell the creators really love this stuff and were having the time of their lives bringing us the adventures of Panty and Stocking.
The other notable thing about the show is its treatment of sex. I'm gonna get this out the way right now, although you never see anything (it's not a porno, like I say; I have never once been aroused by the show), sex is heavily featured. Well, Panty is portrayed as a massive slut, after all.
But the way the show treats it is weird. It never feels forced or tacked on - it honestly makes me laugh without feeling awkward, something no show before it has been able to do.
What's even better is that, when you think about it, all the sex kinda makes sense in a way, considering the Bible's treatment of the subject.
I may just be overthinking it, so I'll leave that for just now.
With a killer sense of humour, an honest love for old Western cartoons, and a soundtrack to die for (FLY AWAY NOW FLY AWAY NOW FLY AWAY), Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt has rocketed its way into my top... ooh, I dunno, I don't keep count, but it's certainly the first thing I think of when someone mentions favourite anime nowadays. It also manages to be pretty freaking epic, which is an achievement in itself.
I'm not saying you will like it (in fact, the whole show is apparently Marmite, but I've only ever experienced the good taste. Not with Marmite though, I hate that stuff), but if you're not offended or repulsed by sex, blood, and... er... other bodily fluids (the first episode is called "Excretion Without Honor Nor Humanity", that should tell you something), then seriously, give this a chance - it's seriously a lot more than just a bunch of sex jokes strung together.
Long story short, it rules.
Sorry.
