Hey, guys! As we all know, Sonic The Comic’s 20th birthday is coming up and I have an idea for what will hopefully be a very cool celebration/birthday present as part of the big day. But in order to make it as good as possible, I need input from as many STC/STCO readers and staff members as I can get.
What I need from you is for you to send me your responses for the following criteria. It would be most helpful [ie, unbelievably helpful and I’ll love you long time] if you could supply them in an audio format (send them to STCPodcast@Live.co.uk) though if you don’t want to or if you want to add to the discussion here then by all means post them on here and we’ll work out an alternative audio solution for the finished product. For recording audio, you may find it helps you articulate your thoughts better if you type them up first and then read it back (basically I’m saying that so there are as few umms and ahhs as possible to edit out!). You can respond to as many or as few criteria as you like. Note that, unless otherwise specified, the criteria below all relate to the stories featuring Sonic and related characters in STC and STCO and specifically the STC/STCO characterisations of the characters.
The criteria are (remember, these all apply to both STC and STCO!):
Your Claim To STC Fame: This one might not apply to the majority of answerers. If you’ve ever contributed to STC or STCO or have been involved in a notable way within the STC community then let us know here. Otherwise, feel free to leave this one blank. By all means, even if you have only the tiniest credit on any issue, don’t feel too foolish to namedrop yourself!
First issue: This is an easy one. Tell us which was your first issue of Sonic The Comic. If you never read the original comic when it was in print, what was the first issue of Sonic The Comic Online you read?
Favourite main character: For the purpose of this questionnaire, assume “main character” refers to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Doctor Robotnik. Tell us why you like them and what you feel sets them apart from the other characters!
Favourite (non-main!) hero/neutral character: STC has loads of great original characters and just as many brilliant spins on Sega characters. Most notably in the secondary cast, we have Johnny, Porker, Tekno and Shorty but let’s not forget the likes of Captain Plunder, Norris Wimple, Cream the Rabbit and even Madge and Arthur! What was it about these characters that made them stand out the most to you? Note that Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are not options for this question- this question pertains to the secondary and tertiary characters in STC’s world.
Favourite (non-Robotnik!) villain character: STC has just as many (if not more!) exciting villains as it does heroes. From Emperor Metallix to Metamorphia, Brutus to B.A.R.F., Ko-Dorr to Chaos, Sonic and his friends were regularly pushed to their absolute limits by their foes. Which baddies did you enjoy the most and why? Note that Robotnik is not an option for this question as, realistically, he’d be at the top of almost every reader’s list. Super Sonic is an option as he’s a separate entity from Sonic within STC continuity.
Favourite story and/or issue: A bit of a meatier question, this. Which specific story or issue do you like best? It can be part of a larger story arc and it can be either a Complete Story or a multiple part adventure. Why is it your favourite of them all?
Favourite story arc and/or game tie-in: Likewise, which long-running over-arching storyline was your favourite and why? Whether you like the countdowns to Disaster or Doomsday and the Final Victory that followed, or you preferred the time Robotnik reigned supreme, or if you most enjoyed the issues where Sonic fought the Brotherhood of Metallix, tell us what about the stories you most enjoyed. By game tie-in, I’m referring to the issues that serve as STC’s adaptation of Sonic CD, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 (though the last one is probably the loosest adaptation of them all; for that reason you’ll note I haven’t listed Sonic Battle or Sonic Heroes as, while STCO has used elements from them, they haven’t been full adaptations of the games in question).
Favourite artists: This is an obvious one- if you can supply multiple answers and a reasoning that’d be a big help. If you like, you can choose artists who worked on Sega Superstars strips as well.
Favourite writers: As above but with the writers instead. Again, the more answers the better as well as specifically why you liked what they wrote.
Most controversial moment/story: STC and STCO have had their share of controversy! There’s been many a bust-up over the years over a number of storylines or plots. While I don’t wish to open old wounds, which story shocked you the most… but still left you talking about it afterwards?
Funniest moment/story: Which moment or story in STC/STCO’s history made you laugh the hardest? Did Decap make you crack up? Did you chuckle with Knuckles? Maybe Charmy’s barmy behaviour gave you the giggles. Was the idea of raining bananas simply bananas? Let us know what moments made you laugh ‘til it hurt!
Favourite Decap Attack story/moment: It’s probably safe to say most STC readers have fond memories of Decap Attack. Nigel Kitching took an obscure Mega Drive game and turned it into one of STC’s most endearing and enduring strips. It’s lived on in STCO, too! Which Decap story or moment do you remember with the most fondness?
Favourite Sega Superstars story/moment: Likewise, STC and STCO have seen many other Sega Superstars get some comic book action of their own! Which series, story or moment do you recall with the greatest amount of happiness?
Other fond memories: Everyone’s memories are different! Do you have any other STC stories or memories you’d be happy to share?
Now, here’s the disclaimer bit:
First off, while I realise I’ve censored swearing on episodes of Sonic The Podcast, feedback to this has to be strictly non-sweary. I don’t want to have to break up the flow with censor beeps. If you respond to five of the above and four of them have a swear word in, I can only use the one that doesn’t. I realise that a request for no swearing is rich indeed coming from me but, trust me on this one, a bit of decorum will make this that bit more special.
Secondly, I can’t promise I’ll use every single response. If you all respond to every criteria then that’s absolutely fantastic because it’ll give me loads to work with. But it will also likely mean a need to edit things down more substantially. Making your answers as interesting as possible will grant you a better chance of being included in the final product. I’m not going to tell you how long or short to make your responses, but if you go off on a ten minute anecdote on a single question, do expect it to be trimmed a bit. On the other hand, don’t feel as though you can’t go in depth in your answers. Like I said, keep it interesting and you’re all good.
Thirdly, no, this is not an episode of Sonic The Podcast per se, but it might be uploaded as a special “bonus feature” at some point. If- for whatever reason- you would really rather not be circulated via iTunes or whichever medium, then I need to know so I can make two versions of the final edit.
Lastly, the deadline for this is April 30th. That gives everyone ample time from the time of me writing this to submit something (well over a month in fact) and also gives me adequate time to edit things together appropriately well enough.
Thanks, guys, I hope this can be an awesome birthday present to the comic with your help.
