How do you know that losing them won't mean even less of it…

Can't think but help this sends a rather unpleasant message to the artists who worked on STC, in its anniversary year of all times. "Your work isn't good enough to use on our forums." Call yourselves STC fans… Says the guy who has Cedric as his avatar.

How do you know that losing them won't mean even less of it… How do you know it will? We don't know until we try, if it comes to that.

Wow, Tom. Isn't being on a forum dedicated to a now-defunct comic and continuing to talk about it and talk to like-minded people enough? Is it really? This seems to me like a push towards the board being more its own thing, only tangentially related to STC. Which wasn't really the intent when the thing was set up. Avatars will have absolutely no effect on whether people talk about STC(o) or not. There is an STC(O) section, and there is a non STC(O) section. This is the case for any forum; there are on topic and off topic areas. This isn't a push towards this forum becoming "it's own thing" so much as a gentle sigh in that direction. I don't know about everyone else, but my forum skin has "STC" in giant, unavoidable letters at the top.

All right, I've locked the poll. It's been over a week now - it was supposed to end yesterday but I thought I'd give it a bit more time to make sure there were no last-minute surges for either end.
So custom avatars are now allowed, but let me stress a few things. Currently, this is a trial basis. If this doesn't work we'll go back to the way it's always been. Avatar sizes should be 60x60. We don't want giant images cluttering up the screen. Nothing inappropriate or against our rules, please - boobs are great but I'd like to be able to view the forum in public and only have the shame of being on a Sonic forum hang over me.
We'll see how it goes. (I suspect most folks'll just keep their STC avatars anyway - I know I will.)
Edit: I don't know if we have the option open just now. It might take a wee while, I don't want to pester the admins.

This seems to me like a push towards the board being more its own thing, only tangentially related to STC. Which wasn't really the intent when the thing was set up. If anything it's a push to move away from that. For years now the forum has been a place where the same small group of people who've known each other for a long time discuss tv shows, their lifes, etc. Just compare the amount of new posts on the Sonic sections prior to the Anniversary to the amount of new posts on the Gaming, TV, or Lounge sections. By opening up in small ways like these, we ensure new blood can come in, because a forum is more than just the text- for that, we could all just go back to the mailing list, and it's 2013 by now. Nothing wrong if you like mailing lists, but don't force everyone to go there as well. EDIT: Shay, may I suggest a rounder 100 x 100? It's a standard sized used everywhere and the increase in size isn't much, it's neglectable even in the new Proboards layout. EDIT EDIT: Also yeah, not working yet. And I think you may have accidentally removed the list of pre-existing avatars. EDIT EDIT EDIT: Sorry, assumed you actually did something, forgot it's in the admins' hands.

Says the guy who has Cedric as his avatar. Anyone doubting I'd die in a ditch for STC should try reading that story Tom, you're being ridiculous. No-one should have to "prove their STC fanness" to be a member of this forum. The decision to do this is based on what people want to see from the forum, and at the end of the day it's only one change - it's not the end of the world! Remember we're not a private club. We want new people to come here too, perhaps even those who have discovered the comic for the first time, and talk with us crusty old fans! I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but please have some perspective here.

Right, you have to be trolling. There's no way you can be making these posts with any seriousness.

Surely no moreso than any other forum with a dedicated focus that allows custom avatars? This is the only forum I'm a member of that doesn't allow custom avatars. Edit: was. And Tom, you're insane.

Tom, are you sure your user title is correct? Surely, the time of the verb in it should be present, no? :/ I mean yeah, if the "no"'d won I'd have called you all old curmudgeons, but from there to a "tyranny of the mob" appeal is not only ridiculous but puzzling as to how can this be such a slight to you you'd be so offended, and WHY are you taking it as such a slight to your person and your beloved StC. You're being a mother hen, basically.

Thing is, did you set this thing up (The Sonic the Comic ONLINE forum, as in, the forum connected to the ongoing fancomic) as a means to celebrate StC and its future, or as a memorial service? Because all measures that had been taken so far seemed more pointed to be somewhere where people'd be able to sadly mourn the passing of StC. What's wrong with instead focusing on new StC-O to come, and making the forum friendlier to use to new users?
We're not even talking that kind of absurd thing like facebook connection or anything, and I'll concede and stop complaining about images on signatures, but free avatar choice on a small, non-annoying size? That's a bare minimum, really.
EDIT: Really, I suppose the difference here is "Do you want 10 further years of a forum longing navel-gazing about StC, or do you want to try and start getting fresh things here?" We get perhaps one new member that actually sticks by per year. That's ridiculous.

At the end of the day, this is a forum for people who enjoy STC and the Sonic franchise, helped into life by Tom and others, for which I, and likely many others, are grateful. Tom: Custom avatars are a trivial change to a gathering that will otherwise retain its key focus and purpose, and rest assured nothing will happen to detract from that while we're all about. Mauro: The board was started after STCO was started up. It serves as a continuously live messaging section to supplement the continuation, though it can be, and has been, used as a reminiscence over STC past as well. It doesn't serve one specific purpose or the other, and that was never the intention.

Yeah, sorry if it doesn't come across that way, but that's basically what I'm trying to argue for I AM grateful people made the forum, and obviously a forum about StC-O is also a forum for StC. It really just felt like in the 3, 4 years before this anniversary the "StC-O" part kinda fell away and the forum was only used to carry on the usual friendship conversations on the Lounge and the occasional retrospective on StC. I suppose what I'm saying is I don't want the forum stagnating.

I'm just wondering if custom avatars would be acceptable if they're related to the STC/STCO comics.
For some reason it feeds my ego as an artist if the avatar I have is made by me and show of my skills, rather than having to accept the work of someone else. It's a crude, greedy and jerkish reason that no doubt insults the comics artists, but what can I say, I'm a human being and as such, I apologize in advance if this have insulted someone.

Yeah, of course. So long as the image isn't crude or inappropriate (swearing, things of a sexual nature, etc.) feel free to use it as your avatar. That's fine, you won't offend anyone at all.

They're acceptable, yes- that's what this poll was all about. Per current rules, 60x60 on size (may I again suggest changing this to 100x100, as the 40 px increment won't affect the tabling of the forum per the new Proboards structure, and it's a more standardized size used throughout the internet?)

Guess I'll get to work then, might as well spend my vacation on something useful since it's gonna be a wet one.
Whoo, forecast says it'll be nothing but rain the entire first week of it.
