What I want to know is why are we apparently supposed to loathe Martha's dad's girlfriend yet love Jackie Tyler when they're exactly the same character.

Really enjoyed that episode, even my housemate sat down and watched it which was a very good sign. The straw made me think back to a certain Red Dwarf episode/alien as well.

Not a bad episode really. If the series continues like this, then I'll probably watch all of this series. Looking forward to episode 4.

That would be the Psyrans from Red Dwarf VI. This episode was great, but I though Rose was a better episode for character introduction. Also any episode that has walking, talking space rhinos with big laser guns is automatic WIN! ;D

Aye, I thought it was equal parts epic, "real" and quirky, which is usually a good balance for these sorts of things - I must confess the Shakespeare one hasn't been high on my list of interest for the series, but we'll see I suppose Freema did quite alright too, given how much pressure was on her - lets hope she (and the series) keeps it up

I though Rose was a better episode for character introduction. Rose had aliens attempting to mass-murder all of humanity and treated them as a less important secondary plot. Smith And Jones, on the other hand, actually has the aliens and threat to human life treated as important and combines it much better with the character introduction. Plus, space rhinos.

I hope Freema doesn't become another Rose Tyler with the whole "NO THE DOCTOR'S NOT DEAD! HE CAN'T DIE!!! WHA WHA WHA WHA NOT FAIR!!!" (see "The Satan Pit".)

Those space rhinos were totally awesome, I just saw Doctor Who Confidential, and the people inside them get so damn hot, must be a nightmare. 1,000th post .

I liked it, Russel has impressed me in that he hasn't made Freema a clone of Rose and hasn't cloned her family (and thank GOD, her brother isn't gay). Unfortunately, it DOES seem like he may have kept that stupid 'seekrit word' thing, which I noticed watching Confidential: The "Vote Saxon" posters all over that alleyway where Martha goes with the Doctor.
I could be wrong, we'll have to wait to see if anything reoccurs in the next episode, but it looked pretty suspect to me - could we see a politician as the 'big bad' at the end of the series?
Anyway, it's a good start to the series and the Martha/Doctor relationship is one I heartily approve of as a good next step after the Rose/Doctor relationship and I hope the rest of the series continues to be as good as this (and is as unlike Torchwood as humanly possible).
Incidentally, the pig-men are with the Daleks! Daleks and Pigs! Pigs and Daleks!

Planet Zovirax (sp?) FTW. I lol'd, as did my dad. The "Vote Saxon" posters all over that alleyway where Martha goes with the Doctor. Now that you mention that, I remember someone mentioning that a "Mr Saxon" had been decrying the numerous cover-ups. My guess is he's gunning to replace Harriet Jones, Prime Minister. Anyway, decent episode. The Plasmavore (?) thing was a bit meh (although it did give us the sight of Anne Reid drinking David Tennant's blood through a straw, so it can't be that bad), but I liked the Judoon. Hope we see them again. Liked Martha straight away (and she is hot). The idea of Emily Pankhurst stealing the Doctor's "laser wrench" made me giggle. That is all. Roll on Shakespeare!

Well, it seems to be back on form after the last series, which was essentially the Adventures of Rose. Could all change, but I enjoyed this one.

The Radio Times said that the last two series were just time-fillers for this series.

Brilliant Episode and did anyone else notice how they cleared up the plot hole of how Martha appeared before in the Series 2 finale when she died when the doctor used his Sonic Screwdriver and her and the guy died.
also loved the judoon and the plasmavore. I also loved the way the doctor reacted when he lost his Sonic Screwdriver due to the radiation and the way he expelled the left over radiation after absorbing it was funny I actually thought he might pass wind due to the expressions he was making.
I also loved the part when he turned around and said "Barefoot on the moon"
Really looking foward to the next episode

Plasmavores are both inferior and superior to haemovores. The former uses straws to extract blood and they can change shape, but the latter group are basically huge, hideous, mutant smurfs.

Saw the episode today on my friend's computer. Love it! So much better than Rose's introduction, and Martha actually made it clear she wasn't interested in the Doctor romantically. Let's hope that statement stays fact.
FYI, I love it when people get disintegrated. ;D

Martha actually made it clear she wasn't interested in the Doctor romantically. Let's hope that statement stays fact. It wasn't fact to begin with, it's clear that Martha fancies the Doc (just look at the kiss). The Doctor doesn't have any interest in having anything with Martha after Rose though. (Am I the only one that watches Doctor Who confidential where they explain these things?)

Someone pointed out to him in an interview that Torchwood didn't go down well, and his literal response was basically 'screw them, it got good ratings. I don't need to change it.' 'Screw the fans, I've got ratings!' Next Seto Kaiba.

He sort of misses the point that the complaints come from, er, the people who make up those ratings. Which means they might not come back next season, which means ratings go down.
I know this and I'm not a BAFTA-winning producer.
