There should be a topic about this. There MUST be a topic about this. This is, undoubtly, one of the best games of the year.
Got it at Christmas and I'm already on Chapter 6, "We don't go to Ravenholm..."
I love the Half-Life series because the developers don't essentially concentrate on what other developers do. No, the develpors on Half-Life actually focus on immersion. Half-Life was cool because enimies and allys were actually intelligent. They don't just waddle in to gin fire, they duck, cover and use stragetic tactics.
But now, Half-Life 2 takes all the essentials from the original, and then make it even more immersive by having characters respond to the player's mere presence. Such as they become annoyed if you stare at them too long.
The basics of the plot: Its been years since the Black Mesa incident. Planet Earth and the Vortigaunt aliens from Xen are slaves to the Combine. A vicious alien race which rules Earth with an iron and cold fist. Escapees from Black Mesa have set up a resistance to one day overthrow the Combine, but they haven't seen thier old comrade, Gordon Freeman, ever since the incident.
Little do they know, that Gordon has arrived on Earth once more.
Years ago, Gordon traveled to Xen to end the threat of the Xen Masters and the Nihilanth. When he defeated the Xen Masters and Nihilanth, he unwittingly freed the Vortigaunt slaves on Xen. But he also met the mysterious ambassador who was visiting Black Mesa, G-Man.
G-Man wanted to recruit Gordon, he found his abilities had limitless potential for the unknown government he worked for. Gordon agreed, hoping to become an aide for humanity.
What Gordon's assingments were between the end of Half-Life and the beginning of Half-Life 2 are completely unknown. But now, he has returned to Earth, and free it from the oppressive Combine and, his old boss, Wallace Breen, former Administrator of Black Mesa. Now administrator of Earth.
